Roads and Roads

Post by Lanya Caliope » Sat Apr 15, 2006 8:25 pm

She walked up the center of the road, plunking her staff ahead of her in a mimic of someone who actually needs a staff to walk. She didn't place any weight on the thing, but she couldn't bare to be rid of it, for that meant she'd also have to give up the tiny wooden robin which used the top of the staff as its perch. The staff was devoid of the robin, howevger, for it remained perched on her shoulder as she walked, chattering relentlessly as birds do. Its wooden beak and wings clacked as it gibbered and sang, and Lanya occasionally reached up to stroke its breast or scratch its head. She had no idea if the thing could feel at all, but it enjoyed these shows of affection, and rewarded her with a whitling chirp every time.

Across her back, a sleek healthy greenwood guitar thunked, slung haplessly over her shoulder by a strap attached to its back and base. She was lazy about caring for the thing, since it took care of itself - no matter what she did to it, smashing it against the ground or beating it with rocks, the thing continued to thrive, and never attained so much as a scratch on its lovely wooden frame. She damned its deadly, merciless strings but couldn't shake the burden. Not for the first time, she silently cursed a long-gone blind dryad for bestowing such a mixture of blessing and curse upon her. The guitar refused to leave her, protected her regardless of the cost, and she resented it for its lack of emotion. They could've helped that girl. They couldn've helped her, but the thing instead had wrapped those deadly coils about her wrists and neck, choking and severing until both demon and girl were gone.

Lanya scractched the wooden robin's head and distracted herself with its delighted whistle. Such angry thoughts only took her down a sad path, and she'd come to this place intending to forget. Here she would be no witch, but simply a travelling bard, singing for money and for the love of song. Here, she would have her life again.

As the village came into more solid view, she shifted both guitar and pack around, making herself comfortable. It was time to find the local inn and offer herself for an evening's entertainment. This normally guaranteed room and board, though many innkeepers lately demanded that she prove her skills before they provided so much as a bowl of broth. She would stay here for a week, maybe two or three, to earn enough in tips from the patrons to stand on her own comfortably, then head to the city. She would look for employment in the city, then, perhaps working and living in a tavern or bar, and when she had enough to live off of for at least a year of solid travel, she would leave and return to her home once more to settle down. She was getting older and more tired as the years passed, and now she had the weight of a child's death eating at her. If she'd never left home in the first place...

Shrugging again, she entered the village and began the task of asking those around her for directions to the nearest, or only, inn.

Kamar leaned easily against a wall, picking dirt from beneath his fingernails with a toothpick. He had only been in Marn a short time, a little less than four days, and already the contacts he had made were working like a well-oiled machine. It had been simple to ferret out one of the fellows who passed as an assassin in Marn, and learn all about the current Guild, it's leader, and the current hit the Guild had been contracted for. It had been simpler leaving the fellow in a back alley, attempting to stem the lifeblood as it poured from the hole Kamar had put in his jugular.

All of this had led him to Shim, awaiting the approach of a pretty young woman who had, it seemed, killed a girl-child. The family wanted retribution, badly enough that they had searched out a member of the local Guild of Assassins and were willing to pay quite handsomely for the culprit's life. That local Guild had then sent messages to other Guilds, as Assassin guilds would generally keep in touch, to some degree.

It was Kamar's good fortune, or perhaps his talent for prodding peoples' memories for that little detail that no one else could get them to recall, that had allowed him to glean the information that the young woman was headed in the general direction of Marn, through Shim. Yes, his contacts were already serving him well.

Kamar shifted as he leaned on the side of the inn, switching the toothpick from his right hand to his left, and began cleaning the dirt from beneath his other nails. The hood hid his continually searching eyes as he watched for the young woman's approach.

He paused in his grooming, almost immediately starting again. A green cloaked figure with a staff stopped, seemingly asking another person for directions. The second person replied and pointed, directly at the Inn against which Kamar leaned. A wicked smile creased his lips, hidden beneath his hood, as he noticed the rather nice guitar slung carelessly over the green cloaked figures back.

Yes, his contacts were working well indeed...

Wolfhound smiled as he walked through the village, his cloak wrapped around his body and his hood hiding his face. It was strange, this assassins scent, it kept appearing and dissappearing, it was as if he just vanished and then apperead somewhere else. ‘Something to look out for I guess. At least he’s in a village, all the more wolves to help me with’ Wolfhound let out a low growling laugh. The fun was just about to begin.

‘For Kamar – no! Assassins have no names, for the assassin to be in a petty village means he must already have a target. I need to end this soon before she’s killed.’ Wolfhound looked around, trying to pick up Kamar’s scent. ‘There! So close, just over that building!’ Wolfhound began communicating with the wolves, telling what positions to take up so he couldn’t escape and where others should place them sleves for surprise attacks. Of course the one wolf who always went everywhere with him was sticking at his side. Wolfhound took one last look at the building before he began to shift shape. To anyone who saw, it was as if his muscles were ripping and growing back larger, his eyes clearly narrowed and were still a glowing orange, and his black pupils narrowed to vertical slits. His claws grew from his fingers, and his canine teeth grew into fangs. Of course though, they couldn’t see the fur that grew on ears due to his hood.

Wolfhound let out a deep challanging howl, and leapt over the rooftop. Landing, he stood up very slowly, at such close range Kamar’s stench was almost overwhelming, it always was. Wolfhound turned to face the stench, and saw him, calmly filing his nails! “I’ve found you assassin, I bring you bad luck”. Normally Wolfhound would pounce now, but instead he simply transformed back into his normal self. This one was an intresting prey, he wanted to know as much about him as possible, and he wanted to enjoy himself.

Lanya eyed the shabby building which served as the town's inn. She wasn't sure if the weathered signs were good or bad - one could never be sure until the village passed judgment. Such old wood indicated an older village, with established customs and relationships, which meant that if one was judged harshly, one had to leave.

But if one could become an accepted part of the scenery, of the community...there was nothing stronger, in so many ways.

She shifted her guitar once again and started forward. If nothing else, the place meant a meal and a bed for the night. If they didn't accept her offer to entertain the group this night, she'd simply move on to the city she'd heard was nearby. A city was easier to find work in, though deep within she was a country girl at heart. She'd always be more comfortable among the wildlife and trees than among the cobblestones and skyscrapers.

There was a cloaked figure leaning against the side of the tavern, and Lanya hesitated. There were many cloaked types wandering about, but that didn't mean it wasn't a sign of this being a more dangerous town than she thought. Perhaps it would be better to leave, or...

"Idiot," she muttered to herself. "What would you do, walk along the dark road to the city alone instead of the brightly lit inn just before you? Moron. Fool."

She continued the quiet beratement as she approached the inn, though she moved cautiously, prepared to run toward or away, depending on which way he moved. Of course, if he wasn't human...she'd worry about that when it came.

Then the wolf appeared.

Or rather, the large wolf-like creature with a wolf at its side.

Caution quickly became panic, and the woman froze, remembering a time when a deadly creature similar to this one had attacked her. She had no idea if that was settled, or if perhaps this was another of the blind dryad's friends, striving to kill her. And it was talking to the hooded figure, as if, as if...

Plotting.

She turned on her heel and began a determined trek away, senses on the alert for any footsteps behind. If those men followed, she'd run. Until she needed to, she'd walk, calmly, trying not to draw attention. And head for the city. Alone. In the dark.

Fool. But where else could she go?

Kamar watched as the figure approached the inn he leaned against. He watched her hesitate as her gaze fell on him, and he smiled within the confines of his hood. The howl from nearby registered in the back of his mind, but he immediately dismissed it.

A cautious one, for sure, he thought. Perhaps...

Again, Kamar paused as his half-elven ears caught the slightest sound of a scrape on the rooftop above him. He immediately continued to pick the dirt from beneath his nails, keeping an outwardly calm demeanor.

Then the creature dropped to the ground next to him. Kamar paused enough to lift his head, to take in fully the creature now standing before him.
“I’ve found you assassin, I bring you bad luck”.
Kamar watched the transformation from wolf-creature to human... ish. He didn't reply, only watched, weighing the differences, checking out this creature, looking for weaknesses. He picked the last of the dirt from beneath his thumbnail, then tossed the toothpick away.

"I'm sorry, my good... man. I don't believe I know you. Why would you think me an assassin? Perhaps because I lean against an inn in the early evening, awaiting the arrival of a friend?" Kamar chuckled, with actual mirth. He continued, in a voice that only one with supreme confidence in his abilities could pull off. "Perhaps you have the wrong person?"

He let his hands drift to his sides, his right dipping into the deeper darkness of his own shadow, both hands far enough away from his body so as not to alarm the wolf-creature before him.

His gaze flickered to the side, regret forming in his mind as he watched the figure walking away. His attention was back on the immediate threat before him in less time than it took him to register the regret and dismiss it from his thoughts.

'It seems this one wants to play' Wolfhound communicated to the wolves, every wolf let out a low growl, in imitation of a laugh. Using his slight of hand a knife appeared in his hand and he drew a rock out of his pocket. Slowly allowing his hood to fall back he raised his head, revealing his glowing yellow eyes.

Wolfhound began to sharpen his knife on the rock, "Not an assassin, ey Kamar? Thats a good one, I haven't heard that in a while. I don't know if you know who I am, but I've built up quite a reputation in some areas, I'm known as Wolfhound. I hunt down assassins, and you are an assassin. Judging by that look you gave that woman with the guitar, she's your target."

Wolfhound stepped out of the shadows, revealing him self to the Assassin, 'I thought this one would be fun, but if he's so close to his target, maybe I should make contact with her.' Wolfhound spared a glance at the inn before turning back to face Kamar.

Genuine confusion registered on Kamar's face as the creature used his name. He cocked his head to the side, allowing the confusion to show through, ever the showman, the consumate actor. The hood slipped back just enough to clearly reveal his confused features as he said, "I'm sorry? Did you just say 'Kamar'? I do hope you know that is not my name. I have gone by Samuel since the date of my birth."

His sharp ears had registered the growling surrounding him, though he didn't let on that he had heard, and the confusion was more a ploy to allow himself time to attempt to count the creatures around him by seperating the growling; to learn perhaps where they were in relation to him, and where they were not. He remained still, only lifting his leg to place his right foot flat against the side of the building he leaned against.

She was at the edge of the village when she realized she was being irrational. If those two were a threat, running into the dark would only make them more so, and it would probably get her killed just a little faster for good measure.

So she'd deal with it, now. She'd go back the way she came, go inside the tavern, and be safe for at least a small amount of time. And tomorrow, when it was bright daylight outside, she'd make the not-as-dangerous trek to the big city. If she was going to run, she'd run in style.

She turned and started a slow pace back toward the tavern, hoping that perhaps they'd be gone. No one had tried to follow her, so she was relatively safe, but she still felt as though something here wasn't quite right.

She stopped in the middle of the road when she came into view of the tavern once again. They were still there, to the side, just...talking. Doing that male thing where it's all about silent dominance. She considered her options. She could leave again, and this time stay gone, or just skirt them both, make a wide berth of their conversation about whatever and enter the inn, just another lonely traveler looking for a moment's warmth and peace.

She started forward again, tensed in fear but trying not to show it. She walked past them, with plenty of space in between, and convinced herself she didn't notice them, standing there, looking threatening.

"Just go inside the tavern, and everything will be fine. Just go inside the tavern, and...what?"

She stopped and looked at Flame, who was clacking its beak and wings. Its head went around in circles, something which no longer disturbed her. It was trying to warn her, but without words she didn't know from what. And it was trying to be quiet.

She grabbed the door and stepped inside the tavern, grumbling to herself about mystical wooden birds and how useless they could be.

Wolfhound let out a deep growling laugh, “So you want to play games do you?” He studied the assassin; he was clearly different from the others he had encountered, even now, he didn’t appear worried. On the surface at least, he seemed confused, but he knew he was an assassin.

‘Perhaps I will take my time with this one, play some games of my own’. Wolfhound chuckled, he was going to enjoy this, “If you want to play games, so be it. It’s time for you to find out what it’s like to be hunted”.

Wolfhound communicated with his wolves, sending images of Kamar with all the wolves surrounding him, then gave off the feeling and emotions of the hunt. Now his wolves would hunt Kamar, but not attack, at least until the he decided the game was over. Soon enough, wolves appeared everywhere, surrounding Kamar. Wolfhound could not help him self taunting the man one last time, “Have fun…Assassin”.

Without even looking back to see if the man had even been bothered by the wolves, he bounded for the inn. He reached it fairly soon and stepped through the door. Scanning the room it was easy to find the bard; the guitar was an obvious sign.

Wolfhound quickly walked up behind the bard and softly, but firmly took a hold of her arm, “We need to talk” He said just loud enough for her to hear, then he lent in close and whispered in her ear so no one else would possibly be able to catch even a single word, “You are in danger, an assassin is hunting you” Straightening back up he spoke louder, in a more casual voice, “Is there somewhere we can discuss…old times?”

Kamar cocked his head again as the wolves approached. This was new. He had fought druids who could call animals to fight for them, but never had a shifter enjoyed this same particular ability, to his knowledge. This game got more interesting as the moments passed.

The taunt from Wolfhound was lost on him as his eyes narrowed in concentration. No longer relaxing, every muscle tense, he slipped into a ready position, his left hand moving quickly to push the hood from his head, then slipping to his waist to slip a dagger from it's sheath. His right hand remained in his shadow, although now seemed to be closed about something that was not there, or invisible. Wolfhound was gone now, but still Kamar took no notice. He locked his stare on the closest wolf, remaining tense, ready to move. With his back still close to the wall, Kamar wasn't worried about being attacked from the rear, and so kept his attention straight ahead, using his peripheral vision to keep an eye on the wolves to either side.

The first wolf made a movement towards him, the slightest shift, but Kamar reacted. Tensing his muscles and dipping lower, he flung himself straight into the air, spinning 180 degrees at the same time. His right hand came out of his shadow, something similar to an arrow gripped within it. As the siangham slipped through shadow, it seemed to ripple and disappear, only to reappear in the light. He leapt a good 5 feet straight up, his right hand slamming the siangham into the side of the inn with a loud "THUD". He bent his legs at the knee, drawing them up and giving himself 7 feet of distance to the ground. Without hesitation, he pulled himself upwards with his right arm, slamming the dagger in his left hand in higher up the wall, then pulling the siangham out. Using his oft practiced technique, within a second, Kamar was well out of wolf jumping range, and then was on the roof.

His anger took over as he drew his hood back over his head. He stalked to the deepest portion of shadow and stepped into it, nearly vanishing he blended in so well. The shadows convulsed, and Kamar was no where to be found.

The wolfman was lucky. Lanya wasn't a woman who easily startled or screamed. She didn't fold over in a blind panic, and she never lost sight of her surroundings while terror took over her mentality. But the sudden hand grabbing her arm did startle her, and although she didn't scream, she did jump.

She looked at him, really looked, and saw the animal beneath the skin. The language flowing through her head was much less poetic than what she normally used, but she remained calm and tried not to shout in this man's face. It wouldn't help the situation, and she could tell by his grip that he was stronger than her.

"An assassin...of course there is. And who's to say he isn't holding me right now?"

She narrowed her eyes at him while internally she struggled with a plan. What could she do? Greenfyre, that damned guitar, just lay against her back. Stupid guitar. It didn't think a walking wolf was dangerous, but the damn thing would attack a child...

Perhaps the guitar sensed something other than danger, but she didn't care. She wanted out of this situation. She was about to tell this man something particularly pithy and clever to try and drive him away when the X factor leaped into battle.

Flame, the small wooden robin which had remained perched on her shoulder quietly the entire time, suddenly lept from her shoulder into the man's face, screaming and chirping its anger with her distress. And now she did panic.

"Flame, no! Down! Get down! Stop it!"

She batted at the wooden bird with her free hand, suddenly intent and shielding the wolf-man's face from splintery harm. It didn't occur to her that she'd been terrified of him just moments before.

Wolfhound laughed, “An assassin ey? I find that insulting to my morals”. Suddenly images and emotions flashed through his head. ‘So the assassins disappeared has he…and with no scent’ Wolfhound paused, telling the wolves to spilt up into pairs and search for him.

The wooden bird was just plain annoying and he snatched it out of the air and kept a firm hold. He began pulling the girl over to a free table in the corner of the inn, “If I was an assassin, you would be dead already, no my job is hunting assassins down, and protecting people against assassins…Which is why I’ve found you.”

Wolfhound gestured to a seat at the table, letting go of the girls arm, if she tried to run, he was blocking her path. With his other hand, he slowly let go of the bird, putting it back in place.

Kamar glanced around the dark room he had appeared in, noting the various tankards of ale. He crept lightly towards the door, then peered through a crack in the door. The wolfman's back was to him, and he was clutching at the mark's arm. Suddenly, something was fluttering in the creature's face, and the mark was shouting at it, grabbing for it, swinging. It was the perfect opportunity; they were both distracted.

Kamar murmured under his breath, casting a quick spell (Silent Portal - see description in Kamar's profile). The door swung open on silent hinges, and Kamar moved swiftly and silently across the floor, a shadow moving through the light. His right hand, still clutching the shadow siangham, was poised to strike as he closed the distance in a heartbeat's time.

Not a patron in the tavern had the opportunity to shout a warning as the pointed end of the siangham plunged downward, aimed to sever the spinal cord at the base of the wolfman's neck.
You’re gonna find out you’re already dead, and I was the world coming down on your head.

Just as Wolfhound guestured for the bard to sit, the stench of the assassin, wafted in behind him, so close. Wolfhound to a second to recognise the danger before diving over the table, taking the woman with him. He crashed through the table, noticing only now that the assassin had managed a glancing blow, pipping a light cut down his back.

At that instant five wolves smashed through the inn door, two at a time. They recognized the assassins stench, hair on end they crept towards him. Wolfhound spun to face Kamar. "You made a grave mistake coming here".

Quick as a flash two knives appeared in his hand, throwing them at the assassin, he darted forward, letting another two go he leapt into the air, unleashing a spinning roundohouse kick aimed at the assassins head.

Lanya didn't like this situation, and she didn't like him. Especially after he grabbed her little wooden robin. She tensed, thinking he would crush it, but he simply placed Flame back on her shoulder.

She reached up and cradled the little bird to her chest in a protective gesture, glaring at the wolfman with open hostility. Her protector? Wasn't that nice and convenient. Didn't a woman ever have any chance to make her own damn choices? She'd been dragged through so much by her companions that she felt the unbelievably long patience within her snap. This man was about to get an earful.

She didn't have time to argue, though, because suddenly she was under the table, guitar, staff and all. Then the wolf creature lunged forward, at...at what? Shadows and smoke? She squinted, trying to see what was going on, but she felt..felt...

Shadows and smoke. Oooooh no. She'd been in this situation before - a ruffian attacking something else which manipulated the shadows at will. And last time she'd gotten nearly killed several times.

"Well, that settles it."

Let them have their bar room brawl. She no longer wanted anything to do with this tavern, this town, this way of life. She was going to leave, and just let them try to stop her.

She stood, wincing. The man had knocked her onto her back, which knocked her onto Greenfyre, which instead of shattering just dug into her back, sturdy as ever. She was now not only annoyed, she was in pain.

And that was quite enough.

She turned and headed for the back exit, sneaking along the wall. She didn't believe for a minute no one could see her, but she hoped they were distracted enough to ignore what she was obviously doing - leaving.
