Talia laughed out loud at the thought of the somewhat grumpy guard getting pudgy. It wasn't something she could see ever happening, although who knows, a couple months of home-cooked meals might change that someday.

She grinned back at Jackal and nodded her head. "Sweeping certainly would help. Make sure they are soft sweeps though, otherwise the flour on the floor will fly up everywhere. I'll get started finishing up the dough and you can join me when you are ready!" Talia pushed her chair back and stood up. The day was turning out to be fairly normal, even with the presence of Jackal in the kitchen!

Jackal was sweeping easily, lips curled up in a smug grin as the broom glided across the floor. This plan was well thought out, well executed and generally was ending well too. That is, until Karma caught up with him. A heavy knock hit the back of the door, firm and authoritive with each passing rap of the knuckles.

Jackal paused, staring at the door with wide eyes before glancing at Talia with puckered lips. He opened his mouth to whisper at her but the deep gruff tone overtook it without trying. "Jackal, I know you're in there. Don't you try and run or I'll get Shade."

Dammit! He'd almost gotten out of school too!

The knock on the door had made Talia jump. People didn't usually come to the back door in the kitchen, most of the time it was only used for deliveries. Although as soon as she heard the voice she started to walk confidently towards the door.

She turned towards Jackal before unlocking and opening the door, wiping her hands on her apron as she raised and eyebrow at him. "So what crime have I ended up helping you out in?" Talia was joking but only slightly, she was a bit worried about what she may or may not have helped Jackal out with, it certainly didn't seem like Drayel was here for a social visit.

Opening the door she smiled up at the man and gave a respectful nod as she ushered the guard into the room. Closing the door behind him she didn't bother to lock it as per usual. After all, what thief would decide to raid a bakery while he was here?

"Can I offer you anything to drink or perhaps something to eat?" She asked politely hoping that a fight wouldn't break out in her kitchen, although it wouldn't be the first time.

Jackal and the dough monster

"Good afternoon Mrs. Idris." Drayel greeted her with a polite nod of the head. He smiled warmly at her, showing he was perfectly happy with her despite his rather irritated glare at Jackal. "Yet, I'm afraid that son of mine is going to get a thrashing. I told you to stop hiding from school! I don't have time on my patrols to be hunting for you!"

"Naw, it was just math class!" Jackal complained crossing his arms and huffing. "Besides, its better to have connections and experience then brain power. I could work tons more just with muscle alone, like Shade does!"

"Shade is a mooch." Drayel growled. "I doubt Talia knew of this?"

"Nah. Hey! Actually she's gonna teach me how to plant flowers 'n stuff for those graves out back." Jackal grinned clapping his hands together. Drayel stiffened as his eyes narrowed, glancing momentarily at Talia before focusing again on his son. "What?"

"School first." Drayel growled firmly. "No more of this skipping. I had to pull chains to get you in there."

"...Naw, but I don't like reading and I hate math!"

"I do not like being told my son has gone missing, especially when he has a bad habit of making enemies with thugs." Drayel snorted. "On top of that, you've gone and involved Mrs. Idris. She's busy enough without this drama."

Jackal pouted before glancing up at Talia. "I wasn't a pain, was I?"

Talia breathed a sigh of relief when Drayel smiled at her. Good, she wasn't in trouble, not that she was really worried but it certainly wouldn't be much fun if she was held responsible for whatever was going on. Listening to the conversation between the two, Talia went back to work kneading the bread one last time. But when Jackal pulled her into the conversation she froze for a minute. Turning around she glanced between Jackal and Drayel with a worried look on her face, she definitely didn't want to be stuck in the middle and that is where she felt she was heading.

Talia swallowed before she answered Jackal, smiling softly at Drayel as she talked. "Well actually, he was a help and I do enjoy the company. Although Jackal," she turned to face the boy and attempted to give him a stern look, "You can't be using me as an excuse to get out of school, it isn't very fair to put me in that spot. And math and reading is very helpful no matter what you are doing, even baking."

"And I am sorry for not being more aware of what was going on." Talia turned back to Drayel with an apologetic look. "If anything I should have realized that it was a school day and that someone should have been in class."

"There is no harm on you, Mrs. Idris." Drayel assured her with a slight chuckle. "I didn't think you knew. However, young man you are getting an ass kicking. This isn't the first time you snuck away nor I doubt it would be the last."

"...So how'd you find me?" Jackal asked sheepishly.

"A merchant complained about a boy matching your description exactly swiping an amulet from his stand. Only place you wouldn't get reported is here." Drayel snorted irritably. "So, where did you hide it?"

"I...dunno what you speak of." Jackal grumbled turning his eyes towards the covered bowls of dough. Drayel followed his eyes with a frown.

"...Mrs. Idris, did Jack help you kneed dough?"

Talia placed her oily hands on her apron cover hips as she turned to Jackal with a sad look on her face. "Did you take something from someone and then come here to hide Jackal?" She really hoped it wasn't true...it made her sad to think that she may have just been used as a cover instead of a friend.

Sighing she pointed to the cloth covered bowl at the far end of the counter. "The one at the end was the one that Jackal was working on. I was going to let him take it home since he worked on it so hard, he did that one all by himself while I worked on the others."

Talia gazed at the bowl curiously. "Do you know what kind of amulet it was? Never mind, it probably doesn't matter." She shrugged the idea off. The boy had probably put too much yeast or something in it, or perhaps the piece that Jackal has stolen was bigger then she thought. Either way something had caused the dough to appear to rise suspiciously well. Or who knows, perhaps Jackal was simply a natural when it came to baking.

"You didn't." Drayel turned as stared intently at the oddly raised dough. He cursed as he stomped to the dough, raised a hand then paused and glanced sheepishly at Talia. "I'm sorry about this but... do you mind if I...?"

"Aw just stick your hand in it already. She was going to give the dough to me anyway!" Jackal snapped as he crossed his arms and bristled. "I don't get it! It's just a measly amulet!"

"You daft fool! That amulet was enchanted!" Drayel fumed as he pulled of his gauntlet. "It was a plant to try and lure out somebody but you damn well stole it first! You're lucky the merchant is a good acquaintance of mine or else we'd both be slapped in irons!"

He fumed before glancing back at the dough which had quickly began to rise out of the bowl.

"Mrs Idris! Can I have you grab that damn amulet?"

Talia stared at the dough as it rose, the moisture from the towel covering the bowl must have been able to counteract some the magic the amulet was giving off. But now without the cover it was growing quiet fast.

Stomping over Talia quickly moved the rest of the bowls out of the way, no use getting her good batches involved in all this. Turning the bowl over she dumped the dough onto the counter top and started to roll it out. The dough was sticky and did not seem to want to work for her like it usually did but eventually she managed to see and grab hold of the chain that the amulet must have been attached too. A couple quick tugs and Talia realized that something was wrong.

"Um....Mr. Morig? I think it's stuck." Talia said as she backed away. Now she was starting to get a little scared as well as angry. She hated magic...this is why she didn't allow it into her life. Every time it had made an appearance in her life it had done something to mess up her life. Hopefully this one could be contained before it too formed bad memories, or got her fired.

"Stuck?" Drayel frowned as he gave her a sharp look before narrowing his eyes at the dough. "Can you at least get your-no. Wait. I'll try and get you out first. Hold on and try not to pull to much. Jackal, give me some of that flour. Oi! Don't give me that look, we've got a bigger mess to deal with thanks to you so using a bit of flour on me isn't killing anybody."

Jackal grumbled as he grabbed a handful of flour and marched back to his father who was busy pulling off his gauntlets. Grunting he put them on the counter coated up to his elbows in flour and shoved his hands in the dough as well. He grimaced at the feel of it but quickly dug his way deeper into the dough, carefully closing in on Talia's delicate hand.

"Easy now, let go of it and pull back. Damn man, how much yeast did you put in this?" Jackal blinked in surprise at the strained expression on Drayel's face. "It's climbing past my damn elbow!"

"Hang on, I'll.... I'll get that flippy thingy!"

"Flippy thingy?"

"SOMETHING WITH A POINTY EDGE! I'LL GET A KNIFE!"

"NO!" Drayel quickly stepped between the now frantic boy and Talia, unsure how well the boy could use a knife under panic. "No. Now everybody settle. Talia, is there some way to get this bread to stop growing? How does bread stop rising normally?"

Well this escalated so much faster then I would have liked Talia thought as she tried to maintain composure while Jackal started to panic and was practically running around in circles and Drayel tried to calm him down, or at least keep him from using a knife while in such a frantic state.

She closed her eyes for a moment when Drayel finally turned to her and asked a question. Take a deep breathe she looked up at him and attempted to keep the fear out of her voice. "I have never had this happen before. Usually it is a good thing if a loaf rises high. I don't know what to do in this situation. But perhaps in the case of removing our hands, perhaps oil or water would work better? Generally oil is used when making bread, to keep the dough off the hands. And a damp cloth doesn't stick to a mound of dough, we use it to keep it moist while it rises."

Talia concentrated for a moment before looking around Drayel to Jackal. "In that cupboard over there," Talia nodded towards where she was indicating, "There is a bottle of old oil that would be suitable for the job. Bring it over and pour it down our arms, but don't touch the dough." She looked up at Drayel to see if he had anything to add as she bit her bottom lip to keep her whole body from shaking.

Sure all they were simply dealing with dough, but it was magically enhanced dough. Dough that no one had every worked with before so she didn't know how to react to it. All she could think about was the amulet that was in the dough, that was somehow causing another disaster in her life. And if they couldn't stop it...Talia didn't want to think about what would happen or how she would feel about that just yet.

Jackal all but flew to the cupboard, grabbed the oil and came charging back. In his panic he didn't really think, just dumped goo on their arms and mentally tried to figure out how to save his Father and his friend from his own screw up. He just wanted to sell the stupid thing! Earn a couple dollars from it and sneak it into Drayel's pouch, something to help earn his own keep! School didn't earn money! Yet here he was freaking out because apparently said valuable was enchanted.

"I did it!" Jackal yelled slamming the oil back on the counter. Drayel glanced at him, pausing to frown before making a low hum of acknowledgement. Slowly he spoke in a low tone, his eyes turning again to Talia as he gave her hand a firm squeeze.

"Alright, Talia I need you to pull your hand out as far as you can first." Drayel said firmly and calmly, his voice steady as he pointed at the oil with his head. "Jackal, when she gets stuck again slowly pour it on her arm a bit until she can move again. We'll replace the oil Mrs. Idris. Apologies for the situation."

Jackal blushed the same time as his father, feeling scolded and sheepish as he calmed slightly. If Drayel wasn't barking orders, he wasn't panicked right? Then they'd get out safely. He sighed in relief, getting the oil and standing ready while Drayel gave a nod. "Alright, pull!"

Talia did as Drayel told her to, shooting Jackal a grateful smile. It would be nice if the only person that was free from this goo could remain calm and collected in case of further emergency. Slowly working her hands she did her best to get out of the dough that seemed to growing increasingly bigger. Is this stuff ever going to stop expanding?! She thought to herself as her eyebrows furrowed in concentration. Every time she managed to make progress the dough made a squelching sound, as though it was protesting against letting her go.

"I think I am almost out." She murmered, hoping that saying it out loud wouldn't jinx it. The dough was still clinging around her knuckles but it was so much closer then several minutes ago. With a final pull and a loud squelch Talia was free! Of course her joy only lasted a moment before she realized that she was falling backwards.

Drayel grunted in alarm as he grabbed at Talia's waist, gripping her firmly to his hip in an attempt to keep her from slipping on the oil again. What he got instead however was his own sliding mess as he now struggled to stay upright, his arm tightening in subconcious alarm.

"D-dammit!" He cursed while his boots finally let go and he fell on his back, dragging Talia to his chest to cushion the blow he'd caused. He grunted, glaring almost accusingly at the dough that stuck stubbornly to the counter, still growing but at a slower rate. After all, the bloody piece of crap amulet was clenched in his sticky fist. He glanced down at the woman on his chest, arm loosening around her hip now that threat was over. "I apologize for the mess again, are you hurt?"

Talia had closed her eyes in the anticipation for a crash landing since she knew that there was no way that she would be able to gain her balance with the oil that had been splashed on the floor by the formerly out of control Jackal. Instead she felt a strong arm encircle her.

She still ended up falling but instead of landing on the floor she found herself on top of something soft, but firm. Very firm, and muscular and...Drayel? Opening her eyes as Drayel said something Talia realized that she was on top of the guard. It took her a minute before she realized what was happening and that she probably should get off the man.

"Um, I'm sorry!" Talia gasped, blushing a bright red as she scrambled off Drayel. Standing up she glanced at Jackal before quickly turning away from him, she didn't want him to see how red the innocent situation had made her turn. Dusting her clothes clean of imaginary flour she sighed at the oil stains, those wouldn't be fun to try and get out later.

"Don't worry about the mess, it happens every so often." Talia shrugged, finally remembering what Drayel had said to her. " I am fine thanks to you, are you okay? I didn't hurt you when I landed on you did I?"
