It wasn't over for Bela. He wasn't won over by tears. Pleas for mercy and the like weren't very effective with him, and he would have killed her if he didn't want to save her, to make decent progeny out of her yet. As far as he was concerned, the tears were just a lame attempt to garner sympathy. In fact, if they were anything -but- that he would not take it very well. She wasn't allowed to be so weak, even in the face of what he was doing to her.

"Oh no. No no. It's not over yet girl."

His free hand shot up to grab her face, slapping his palm onto her cheek and pushing it up and back. He jerked his other hand to keep her standing, using as much force as it took to make sure she stayed exactly where she was.

He pushed her face back so she was looking at him again, fingers splayed like a spiders legs around the features of her face. Where they touched skin, his nails cut razor lines that dripped what little blood she might have left in her. If he didn't stop soon, she would die, and he knew it, but he wasn't finished.

He stared at her with his one good eye, the other a bloody mess of limp muscle.

"Do what I say or I'll dissect you like the animal you are while you watch. You'll be a limbless blind sack of mute flesh quivering in the corner of my dungeon for the rest of eternity."

He pushed his right hand a little deeper inside of her, squeezing blood out of her lung and forcing it up through her esophagus. He knew she couldn't speak but he didn't care. He watched her lips and made the same expression as before, one eyebrow raised, ear turned slightly to her mouth, listening for words she couldn't produce.

"Say it. Ask me to stop."

"...over yet girl."

She'd blacked out again. This was becoming a nuisance. It seemed she was missing important information, but she couldn't stop her body's shutting down. She fought to tread water in her mind, struggling to stay above the surface enough to understand his words. It was hard to swim missing one hand. The resistance wasn't as strong.

His hand slapped into her cheek and forced her face back up to stare at the bloody muscles left in the wake of his missing eye. Her eyelids and awareness fluttered, and she refocused on the good eye. He spoke again, and it was an effort just to understand the words as they filtered through the bog of her consciousness. A threat, of the sort she'd suspected. He would keep her alive, but helpless and paralyzed, barely a living creature anymore. And she would just...keep...living.

Each blink forced more water to trail down her face, and although she wouldn't mention it, the tears weren't in fact from sorrow. They were one of her body's limited physical expressions of pain and fear, forced out through exhaustion and strain.

He moved his hand again, a little deeper, and she winced as the pain renewed itself. She didn't hear him, but she remembered what was needed to make it end. Blood bubbled up through her throat again, creating twin streaks from her nose as another line trickled from her mouth. It was too much, this pain, and kept increasing and doubling. The mentor's mutilated corpse flashed through again, with another vaguely remembered lesson.

If you've lost a fight, just lose it and move on. You're an assassin, kid. It's not like you have honor to preserve.

Her eyes were closed, and she was sinking deep into the blackness without a struggle. She didn't realize it meant she was dying, permanently, and if she had known she'd sink faster, welcoming the nothing. But outside, her body wanted this to stop, and so it moved her mouth in the way he wanted, without sound, mouthing what he wanted to hear.

"St..p...pl..s..."

Her body slackened, then, losing its will to stay afloat, and she became dead weight. She wasn't gone yet - she hovered listlessly over the black, wondering what would happen if she just jumped in - but a few more seconds and she would dive. It looked peaceful and quiet in there.

His eye watched intently as her lips moved, forming the blood soaked consonants of the phrase he wanted to hear. He may not have shown any remorse for her suffering, but there was at least some relief, mixed in and diluted with personal pride, when she tried to say them. There was a hint of a smile, his anger gone along with his own fears that he would lose another child.

The hand inside her chest withdrew, sliding down and out of her jellied guts with surgical precision, not doing any more damage on its way. He pulled it free and spread his fingers wide, so drenched in her blood up to his elbow that he might as well have dunked his hand in a bucket of vitae. In a fluid motion that ended with a jerk he shook a waterfall of it off, leaving a scar of red on the ground.

His left hand pushed her down and away into the ground. She had earned his mercy but not his love (thought he still had much for her) and definitely not his respect. He seemed more concerned with his blood drenched clothes than with her or his missing eye, looking down at his two arms with a frown.

"Now I hope you will know better. The next time, and every time after that, that you disobey me, Jenica, will be worse."

He looked down at her and wasn't sure if she could hear him at all. The pain would still be there, the wounds he caused wouldn't heal for days, maybe weeks.

He took two steps and was standing beside her head, looking straight down with a disapproving frown. He moved his right hand so that it hovered a few feet above her mouth and let what was left of her blood drip down. She would be thirsty, but it wouldn't be enough. She needed something more substantial.

"Now, what you so ingraciously took from me before, I give to you again."

He suddenly dug his left thumb deep into his right wrist, using his clawlike nail to pierce several centimeters of black fabric and pale skin. He dragged it downward, leaving a gaping wound behind it that oozed thick, cold blood. He let it drip down at her mouth, knowing that his blood would be like smelling salts for her.

She drifted, arms spread, over a spiraling whirlpool of black. Her hair wisped about her head; Jenica's inner landscape was far, far under water, where she could float and drift to her leisure. She'd drifted lower and lower as her body lost the fight with consciousness, and now she was right above death, permanent death, which in her mind was a deep chasm filled to the brim with black that moved in a lazy spiral. She could just continue sinking, slow and steady, and within moments be surrounded by the nothing. She was curious to know what was down there in the darkness, the truest darkness she'd even seen. Even the shadows didn't have this sense of nothing to them, and she was fascinated by it.

And drawn, ever closer, until she skimmed her toes across the surface, which didn't move or shift in their presence. Her toes vanished into nothing, and that sensation swept through her, filling her with awe. She'd wanted this, just this, for years, and never gotten this close to what she'd longed for. She shifted herself until she was staring straight into it, face-first, and reached a hand out and dipped her fingers into the top of the dark, started to move inside until she would be overcome -

As her body jolted against the forest floor, she was wrenched away from the peaceful dreamscape by a rush of agony jolting through her entire body. She would've coughed and sputtered more blood, but her lungs didn't seem to be working the way they were supposed to. The memory of the darkness she'd so nearly had scattered and wafted away, but the longing remained, and for the first time in ages, she felt that she'd lost something important. Something she should remember. But the hurt returned, and it was stronger now for trying to heal her crushed insides.

She lay there, unable to move for the weight of her own physicality. Every attempt to shift was only more agony, and she gave up and lay silent, accepting that she wasn't going anywhere for a while.

She didn't hear a word he said, and it wouldn't matter if she had - she would heal, and run again later. Bide her time. She would...what's that?

Her own blood splattered into her mouth and onto her face, and she felt the craving rise within her, but she still couldn't manage movement. Moments later, a more steady drip of foreign blood began, and although it wasn't the amount she needed, it was enough to bring her back to her senses, the smells and sounds of earth, animals, forest, and...

She opened her eyes, blinked, and struggled to focus on his face. He was at an odd angle, and she was easily disoriented. She stared at him, fighting to stay focused, for a full minute, before she closed her eyes again and just let the blood run into her mouth and coat the back of her throat. She was slipping away again, this time due to her body's desire to mend itself, and mere unconsciousness, not death, awaited her. Her eyelids fluttered once, and she slipped down again, into the quiet.

He watched her enter his world again; confused, lost, and still in pain. He wasn't sure if she heard what he said, and he wasn't sure if one lesson was going to be enough for this girl. If he had to, he would teach her again and again the kind of suffering the disobedience brought. Eventually one of two things would happen: either she would learn, or she would die. There was no third option. He had a specific use for her, a destiny she was meant to fulfill, and if she failed that her punishment was a death so slow and painful it surpassed normality even for him.

She tasted his blood and was lost again. Unconscious, trying to rest and heal what he'd done to her... But it would not heal. Not for days unless he helped her with it, and he wasn't going to do that just yet.

He ran the base of his thumb over the gash on his wrist and the skin sealed shut without so much as a scar. His coat was ruined, but it was a goner anyway. So much for grace.

He straightened his neck and peered through the woods. There was nobody else around, and at least five hours until the sun would become a problem. His endless patience kicked in and he waited. Like a well trained mime pretending to be a statue, he only moved when there was a reason to. The occasional night animal made some noise that drew the attention of a single glistening red eye moving in a body made of stone.

Time passed. His mind crawled. It bothered him not at all.

She rose again, and she didn't know or care how long it had been. Was barely aware she'd passed out, that time had passed and she'd been unconscious for a portion of it. She blinked, and the moon changed position, was no longer in eyesight. The light itself had changed, become darker as the moon sank below the horizon and left the world without a source of illumination for a while. Stars fluttered before her. She blinked again, and they'd moved, ever so slightly but enough for her to wake up a bit more. She blinked once more, an actual blink with no time delay in between, and winced as her body reports came in. Still hurting, in the same way, and nothing seemed to be healing. What was going on here? She'd suffered wounds before, but they'd healed over time, never more than a few days for the worst of them. If her stomach wouldn't heal...

She closed her eyes as she remembered her left hand plopping into the dirt and leaves. It wasn't her dominant hand, but she would mourn its loss if the injury was permanent. But, as an animal that's lost its leg in a trap, she was assessing her new state of being, analyzing her lifestyle and plugging the new variable into the equation. The hand was something she didn't have any longer, therefore she would learn to live without it. She was still too far removed from human thinking to truly grieve for the lost limb, or make it an identifying feature. Like a slave who's learned the exact distance of their ankle chains and walks to compensate for this, she accepted and worked with the fact that she might never have that hand to work with again.

She was awake, now, with no desire to move. When she tried to shift or send requests to her legs, the pain resurfaced, so she decided to just lie still and wait. Sunrise was still a few hours away, but it occurred to her that perhaps she could just lie and wait until the sun rose. Perhaps it would just burn away the pain. It would be only a few seconds, a minute at the most, and she would be gone.

As the idea lodged itself into her brain, she found herself resigned and looking forward to it. Yes, she'd lie here, quiet and undisturbed, and wait for the sun to take away the pain. It was fitting, to die in a clearing in the woods...a sort of parallel to the night her human body died and gave way to the hunger within.

The old vampire took a step foreword and placed head within her view, peering down with his remaining eye. Seeing the way she lay there staring up at the sky and refusing to move, he realized the potential fact that she had just given up. Perhaps it hurt too much to move, something that wouldn't change before sunrise.

His face was still a mess in comparison with his usual clean self, but it had already begun to heal. The red mess of exposed muscle in his right eye had long since stopped leaking blood and clear stuff, and was kept sealed shut with little effort on his part. He wore no expression that would give him away.

"Stand up." He said bleakly, and, anticipating her inevitable reluctance he added, "if I have to carry you inside it will hurt more than if you do it yourself."

It was a threat, not friendly advice. He wanted her to obey, or he would enforce his laws upon her once more.

When his face moved into her view, she closed her eyes to block it out and further ignore him. He was just some figment, and this was just a dream, and in an hour or so more, it would be over. Time slouched along, each second just another moment filled with pain. Her desire to die was the closest thing to hope she'd felt in years, and the sensation of having lost something important stayed with her, told her that if she just waited here, quiet and unmoving, that thing would come back on its own time.

He spoke, gave an order and a threat, and she opened her eyes to look at his one. The other wasn't bleeding anymore - normal - while her stomach still felt like it was scattered throughout her body. It was possible he knew how to heal her, but she didn't care. She just wanted him to go away and leave her alone. She couldn't say a word, though. Her lungs couldn't take in the air, couldn't even move. She rarely spoke under normal circumstances, but staring up at him, she wanted to speak...and she couldn't. If she'd cared more, it would be frustrating. But her body language spoke clearly enough.

She closed her eyes and turned her face away, content to nestle herself among the forest debris and wait. She didn't even try to make a token attempt to obey, to fake that the injuries were too much and she couldn't move. She tried nothing. If she could've rolled onto her side and turned her back to him, she would've done just so.

Go away. Leave me alone.

Just a bit more time. Just a little longer.

She turned away from him defiantly, the only act she was really capable of doing. It was act of defiance, yes, but at least it was human. In it he saw a lot more than the animal rage she displayed before. Pushing him away like a pouting child provided a key to her inner thoughts, a link to workings in her mind that went deeper than the instinct to kill and stay alive. Resentment and mistrust. Things to work on.

He was about to follow through on his promise and give her a most painful trip to Kaledin Manor when he got the idea to do otherwise. Any more of a beating and she might die. If she could respond to reason, it was the better of two options. There was plenty of time to show her the ways - his way - later.

"My dear Jenica..." He said, and slowly kneeled beside her on the damp ground. "When we first met back in Rashinvale I made you an offer. I promised you something. Greatness and power, fighting prowess beyond even my own.
"That gift does not come for free, Jenica. You need to learn. You have a destiny, and I will show you the way to it, but for that you need to listen. Taking my blood was not the only step."

He slid a hand behind her head and gently turned it so she was looking at him again. He raised it off the ground slightly so that she could see the sky, the woods, and the gaping hole in her stomach.

"You have always had the choice to either die or accept my gift. You left me to run around killing and having fun, but now it's time to pay off your debt.
"I am your sire, Jenica. I own you, and that will not change until you are strong enough to kill me. The sooner you accept that the sooner you can see how great it can be. The sooner you can realize your potential."

Reaching behind himself, he picked up her hand and placed it on what was left of her chest. It was already stiff and more colourless than should be possible for real flesh.

"I will give you your hand back, and I will heal your wounds, but do not disobey me again. Do you understand?"

She heard the ground settle as he kneeled, and the fingers on her right hand twitched as she braced herself for another attack. Every word brought her humanity one step closer, but she shoved it back in anger. She didn't want anything to do with him or his view of the world. He spoke of this as some sort of gift, something he'd offered as a consolation prize. But she remembered, vague though it was. She remembered her terror, her desire to continue living, even if it was only a half-life. She no longer had that desire, and was content to disintegrate into ash with the sunrise. But the problem just wouldn't go away.

And now his hand slid underneath her head, and she flinched at his touch, expecting him to crack her neck and render her truly paralyzed. As it was, she was at his mercy, but she still had limited movements available. And even if she'd lost a hand for it, she had gouged out an eye. It counted for something, to her, even if it meant nothing otherwise.

He didn't twist her neck. Instead her turned her face back to him, and she opened her eyes to see the damage he'd caused. It didn't disgust her, though it was quite gory. It frustrated her, to see that it still hadn't healed, hadn't even started to.

I own you.

It was a limitation, that she knew nothing about herself or her own species. All she knew had been worked out through instinct and experimentation, but she hadn't lived near or even met another of her kind since she'd abandoned him. She didn't know how much he was exxagerating, or what phrases represented his personal beliefs, or if every word he spoke was truth. He seemed to think she had a purpose, a destiny. True or not, she did have a goal. To heal, and leave him again. It would just take time, and patience. And he was offering to help her with healing. How could she refuse?

Another human thing, these deals. You promise something, and I give you something in return. She could play this game, as she'd done many times before with mortals. Make a promise, spit out the words or make the motions that give them peace of mind. It's only words, and sometimes it made the blood sweeter as it was filled not only with fear, but with the rage of betrayal as well.

Her hand plopped into view, and she eyed it with curiosity. He promised to give it back. Was it possible? She didn't know. For now, she'd have to place her bets on his table, and wait to see the outcome. If he could heal her, it was worth the chance. If not...if he were bluffing, just as she was about to...she would wait until she could walk again, and leave. Simple, efficient. No need to bring it up at the moment.

She looked at him, wincing at the pain of even that much effort, and nodded. She would wait, bide her time, and maybe even get her hand back.

He didn't smile when she nodded, but it pleased him to get through. He didn't trust nor mistrust her on the issue of her obediance. If she fled again, he would find her and punish her. Each time she did it he would punish her worse than the last until she learned, or until he ended up killing her. He had plenty of tricks left up his sleeve when it came to physical and mental torture, this night was only the tip of the iceberg.

"Good. Come, this place is unbefitting of you."

His voice was soft and carried with it the sound of affection so genuine it was hard to believe who he was and what he had just done. The truth was that he did care about her deeply, and more than just an expert on torture he knew how to pamper a queen.

His other hand slid beneath her knees and, after adjusting himself to get a comfortable placement, he lifted her up off the ground with surprising ease, as if she weighed nothing at all. He left the hand in her lap, falling into the cavity he put there, and began to walk in the direction of his manor.

"I am taking you to my manor where I can properly help you. Today you rest in luxury, not as a snake, under a rock."

His steps were smooth, and soon they began to float as the river drew closer.

Unbefitting. It took her several moments to wrap herself around the word and what it implied. Some sort of superiority, and that this place wasn't good enough for her. Was beneath her.

She eyed the surroundings as he moved, wondering whatever possessed him of such an idea. This was exactly right for her. What use did she have for actual shelter, for furnishings? For a home? She existed, and she was content just to exist. But he wanted her to do more, to...think more of herself. It was intriguing and somewhat quaint.

He was gentle and his steps smooth, which left her with the constant ache in her abdomen, rather than jolting spasms of pain with each step. Her blood loss made her dizzy, and the gentle rocking of his movements soothed her nerves enough that she felt herself start to fade again. She fought it, this time, trying to stay afloat, to memorize the way and remember certain landmarks, but she'd lost too much blood. His own blood kept her afloat enough to not be unconscious., but within a few minutes, she was asleep again, unable to stay awake for the lack of blood in her body. The last thing she was aware of was the sound of the river as they approached it, and her intense frustration as she sank into sleep again.
