The Fox and the Hound
Re: The Fox and the Hound
Shade
Shade blinked as he stared at the clearly terrified woman. What was happening over there? Was she alright? Was Drayel being a douchnozzel to her? He was ordered to sit so he couldn't get up but... he growled. Whatever was going on over there wasn't good.
"I hope you rot!" Shade shouted as he proceeded to sulk in his sitting position beside Kitan. Then he paused. "No wait, don't do it! You'll drive woman away faster than you already do!"
Drayel glared at him over his shoulder before turning back to the woman with unsure movements of his hands. He couldn't help but smirk. That is, until Drayel threw his arms around the woman and gave her what appeared to be a bearhug. Shade blinked as he gaped in shock, his jaw litterly hanging open wide.
"Oh that poor she-wolf..."
Drayel
To say Drayel was freaking out was an understatement. One moment he was simply asking for the truth, the next she was hyperventilating while stuttering out something about collars and being good. So being Drayel he used his quick wit, thinking about what his mother used to do when he got upset and what Shade normally did when Rebbecca cried. So, he hugged her.
"Hush now." He growled giving her a firm squeeze, his nose twitching as he tried to ignore the itchy hair that teased his nose. "I'm not going to collar you. There is no need for these antics. Settle yourself and I won't bring you harm, little she-shifter. Come on now, no more of this...."
He forced himself to close his eyes, trying to find some sort of peace in hopes if he relaxed she would as well. Animals were based of instinct, right? If he settled down, she should too. At least, that's what he hoped. He drew in a breath, then let it go before cracking open an eye and peering over at Shade's gawking face. His lip twitched.
"Now, when you're done with this... episode I'd like answers." Drayel stated loosening his hold until she could pull away if she wanted. He tried to give her a comfort smile but it turned into a smirk of some kind. Damn him and his stubble, making him look angry even when he was trying to be nice. "Also, I'd like to apologize for my... misguidings. I'm not a bad fellow, just look a bit.... frightening. I have no reason to collar you, do I?"

Re: The Fox and the Hound
The scary guard was suddenly hugging her. Gia tensed, then after a few seconds relaxed. He wouldn't be hugging her if he was going to collar her, right? Unless he was trying to hold her still - Gia forced herself to calm down as she listened to him. He'd have clamped silver handcuffs on her if he intended to restrain her, so maybe... maybe this was just a hug? Maybe he wasn't a bad guardsman?
She felt her breathing slow, though her heart was still racing, and allowed herself to be comforted. Wolves put a lot of stock in touch and physical comfort, and even if he didn't smell like pack or family or home, it was something. More than she'd gotten in a while. She pulled away when he started talking again, wiping at her watery eyes and pulling herself back together.
Gia shook her head. "You don't look scary," she explained in a shaky voice. "I can run faster than you. But I can't run faster than a silver arrow or a stone from a sling covered in silver, and I can't drink water or eat food that's been poisoned with silver." She gulped. "I'm good. I haven't done anything wrong. I don't need a collar. Please don't - " she cut herself off before she could go down that route again.
He seemed to be okay, Gia thought. And all he wanted was an answer for why Shade had gone crazy... well, Shade was clearly crazy enough on his own, but that probably wasn't the answer he was looking for. He didn't seem like he was reaching for a collar, or silver, or even his weapon, though, and all he wanted was what she'd told Shade... For the first time she let herself meet his gaze, because while she was still shaky and nervous, this wasn't something she would back down on. "A wolf collared is no better than a dog. And maybe he doesn't like that but it's true. A pet werewolf? I'd sooner die."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
As Kitan sat on the pavement, he grew somewhat distracted. He leaned back to lie down on the road, using his hands as a makeshift pillow for his head. The clouds were very sparse today, making little crenellations across the unbroken blue of the sky. He sighed, getting rather bored. He began tapping his foot to a tune that only he could hear.
He was quite distracted by his own thoughts, and failed to notice Drayel hug Gia. A butterfly had flown above his head and was circling lazily around. Kitan wondered what it was doing in the middle of a city.
He remained distracted enough that he failed to hear the clank of boots approach him until they were nearly on top of him. As he turned to look, he saw a brawny, stocky guard leaning over him. Floating above Kitan’s face, latched to the armor, was a brooch in the shape of a hand on it, with a circle inside of the hand.
Uh oh. This was a guard belonging to the Hand of Teonidus. Kitan may not have really understood racism before today, but even he had done his best to avoid these guards. He had always felt the stories other shifters had told him about the Hand belonged around a dark campfire. The guard’s beady eyes glared at him through the slit of his helmet. “Frightened of me, eh? Guess that means you’ve got something to hide.”
A sift kick to head made Kitan’s ears ring all over again. The steel crushed his ear uncomfortably against the side of his skull. As he moved his hands to clutch at his damaged anew cranium, the guard reached down and grabbed him by the collar with a bulky right hand. The little kitsune was effortlessly lifted off the ground and put on unsteady feet, though the hand did not leave the rim of his torn clothing.
The guard’s free hand pulled out a slim silver knife. He walked Kitan backwards until they hit a wall and quickly moved a hand from the kitsune’s throat to cover his mouth. Kitan struggled futilely, afraid for his life.
The guard had a wicked smile on his face. He leaned in close and whispered, “alright, now I’m going to ask you once. And only once.” The silver knife hovered closed and Kitan twitched wildly to put even a bit of distance between him and the weapon, so caustic to his kind. “Where are the werewolves?”

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Drayel
"A...pet werewolf? That's how you see him?" Drayel couldn't help but frown at her. "He's no collared dog. In fact, if anything I'd say he wished he could run around without it, be wild and on the move just like you seem to like. Yet, if he did that, he'd be on his own. He wouldn't have a.... pack? Isn't that how you shifters put it?"
Drayel scratched his head curiously when he let out a barking yelp when what felt like a stone collided with the back of his skull. Wheeling around he glared daggers at Shade only to stutter into a pause. Shade's stare was turned to another, a guard who had Kitan by the scruff with a silver knife to his throat. Body tightening he gave Gia a sharp jab sideways as he stalked towards the other, noticing now the harsh growlings that released themselves from Shade's chest.
"Halt!" Drayel bellowed as he stormed his way towards the duo, his teeth baring in clear fury. "What are you doing to him? Release him this moment!"
"Oh, Sir Drayel." The scumbag glanced over at him, still keeping his hold on the Kitsune. "I had heard you were in this part of the city a while ago, didn't realize you were working past hours."
"I'm not. Put him down." Drayel growled as he bristled, his teeth glinting slightly from tightly locked lips. "He's with me and I will not stand for him being handled in such a manner."
"He's.... with you?" Now the guard had disgust riddled in his voice, filled nearly to the top with dark condescending. "I had heard you had a fondness of shifters but I had passed them as mere rumors. Really, you throw your lot with those....things? You could do better my friend."
"I choose my comrades by loyalty and honor, not by their 'types' or backgrounds. Release the boy." Drayel growled clenching his fists until the leather of his glove squeaked protest. He glared down at the stubby thick man with the gleam of a killer. "He has done no wrong."
"Then, he knows not of the werewolves that have been running rampant?" accused the stocky guard. "He's been seen with them! The wolfman and a woman, both seen shifting in an alley by a nearby cleaning woman. It is clear he's in with them!"
"Running rampant?" Drayel frowned as he glanced sharply at Shade behind him. "I'd hardly say they were running rampant at all. There were no werewolf killings, no damaged goods" He gave Shade that knowing stare. Shade gave him a sheepish grin. Apparently Drayel did know about that factory. "and certainly no reason to chase them down. If anything, I'd say there may be a fine for nudity on the woman's behalf but if you wish a fine for such an act, I'll give you it straight from my purse."
"It is not money I want!" The guard spat. "Their kind is nothing but a bunch of rabid animals running in human skin! You defending them makes you all the worst of all of them! We should collar them all and stick them in cells I say."
"Careful what you say, Sir Bewdan. If I didn't know better, I'd say you were simply hunting these people like animals." Drayel warned as his hand slowly traveled to his sword hilt. His eyes grew colder as a slick smirk slid its way onto his face. "Do not forget, should two guards order Shade, he can choose which he wishes to follow and I doubt he'd have a problem answering for my commands."
"Are you... threatening me?" Sir Bewdan growled as he eyed the sword warily.
"See what I say as you wish, a threat or a warning. That is yours to decided." Drayel answered taking a step forward. He gave a backwards glance at Gia and Shade with a calculating eye. "Though, against a seasoned guard and two werewolves we may find a good place to hide a body, even in this town. We wouldn't want that to happen, especially if word got around of our little encounter."
Sir Bewdan's eyes widened as he stared at Drayel in shock. Then his lips curled up and he let Kitan go, drawing his little blade to point threateningly at Drayel and the werewolves.
"You'll regret this. All 'o ya." He spat as he backed away from them, glowering the whole way. His eyes met Shade's and both burned hatred into each others skulls. "I'll get you wolfman, you and your damned pack."
With that he was gone, darting away down an alley and away from 'the pack'. Drayel watched him go with a dull snort before coming to stand beside Kitan, his eyes softening slightly as he bent to peer into the younger's eyes. "Are you alright?"

Re: The Fox and the Hound
"Better on his own than with a collar. You don't understand, you can't," Gia said, shaking her head slowly. "A collared werewolf... we already aren't human, but we aren't wolf. We're a blend and the nicest word for that is dog. But a wolf is smarter than a dog, and a human is smarter than a dog, and so we are not dogs. But wolves hate us and humans hate us and so we don't belong, we can't belong, anywhere except with our own kind." She bit her lip then forged ahead. "Even if the wolf is grateful - " that word was spat out with hatred " - for the collar, it won't make him human enough to be pack here. We don't blend in, no matter how well we behave."
She was relaxing now, though still very deferential to the big guard man. But her hackles went up again when she looked sidelong to see Kitan being roughed up by the new guard. A slight snarl touched her face and her eyes narrowed but she restrained herself, thinking about her words not seconds ago to the big guard. She could at least try to blend in, even if she was horse shit at it. "Not pack with him," she growled at the new guard when he pointed his fancy sword at her. She could take a sword.
That little silver knife though, not so much. She kept her eyes on the guard's in a challenge, a dominant stare of aggression. Once he was gone she kept watching where he'd left, then asked, "Hunt?" to all of them. "I will hunt." The wolf was high in her blood, singing the huntsong in her ears. The man wouldn't be able to use the silver knife when she had his wrist in her jaws. Something about 'blending in' floated across her mind, but they had been threatened! She would hunt-and-kill! "Hunt!" She practically barked, staring fixated down the alley.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan was frowning quite distinctly as the Hand guardsman left the area. He was quite thoroughly concerned for his safety now; today was not a good day for his safety in general. If a hand member wanted to find him, they probably could. As far as he knew, he was the only Kitsune in Marn. If even one person around the post office didn’t like his presence there...
He bit his lip. This could turn really bad, really quickly. Thanks to Nolan’s generosity, the post office already had a bad reputation for hiring shifters.
Gia seemed really mad now. Kitan thought it was a little strange that she could be so afraid of Drayel one moment and was now willing to hunt down this Bewden, who had a silver knife! Wait, did she say hunt him? Uh oh.
“Wait! Gia, don’t do that.” He grabbed onto her shoulder, in an attempt to restrain her and maybe calm her down. “I don’t know how long you’ve been in Marn, but that guy belongs to the Hand of Teonidus! Even I know they are bad news. They lynch shifters, and buy silver weapons! You don’t want to make them mad!”
He looked to Drayel for support. “C’mon. You know those guys, tell her it’s a bad idea.”

Re: The Fox and the Hound
"Enough." Drayel growled as he locked eyes with the female. "The threat is diminished and there is no reason to hunt him down. It will only bring more harm to the pack."
With that he turned and looked at Shade who still sat firmly on the ground. His lip twitched.
"So, you not only managed to blow up a factory, beat up a boy, see a naked woman, and go beserker then get knocked out by myself, you now managed to officially piss off an entire section of guard. You can get up by the way." Drayel stated dryly as he raised an eyebrow at the younger man. He sighed however before glancing at Gia with a tired huff. "You mentioned earlier that Shade is happy for the collar, as if he wants to be human rather than shifter. I.. think you misunderstand him."
"Eh?" Shade jolted to his feet as he stared in sharp anger at Drayel. "What the crap are you spewing? I don't want to be human!"
"Settle down." Drayel snorted. "I'm merely trying to fix up the crap you spread."
"Pah! Sounds like you're just like Sir Dweeb over there. I'm no more happy with this damn collar then Gia is but I can't take it off! I never wanted the damn thing and you assbutts put it on me for having 'too many lovers'!"
"Just because you seem to think I`m like the rest of these corrupt pieces of crap doesn't mean I am. I had no involvement in your shackling nor your capture." Drayel stated flatly. He gave Gia a quick glance at and let out a low growl, his words still directed to Shade. "We'll meet up again in a while at Lucy's place. For now, take them for a walk around people and away from the alleys. Who knows what that little stunt I pulled earned us."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Danger, the wolf snarled. Danger. Hunt. That man has our blood on his hands. Kill. Keeping her eyes locked on where the man turned the corner, Gia breathed deeply to fix his scent in her mind so she'd recognize it again. This man was dangerous and he should be gone.
Slowly, desperately slowly, she calmed down, though a snarl still flickered on and off her face and her eyes were practically glowing. She listened with one ear to the conversation Drayel and Shade were having but suddenly the threat of the collar was lessened. It wasn't likely she was going to get one, at least not from this guard, and that new guard was more likely to give her a collar... though if she'd smelled him right, he was more interested in killing her than anything else. There was nothing like the smell of raw, unadulterated hate to sting the inside of her nose.
Collaring a werewolf for having too many lovers was stupid. She didn't see how collaring would help, anyway, unless he transformed back and forth from wolf to human and lead a double life with the females both dog and human of the city... and frankly, he didn't seem the type to go after dogs. "Not want to be human," Gia explained distractedly. "Only human enough to pass. But can't pass. Can never pass." Her words were still clipped by the presence of the wolf in her blood and she shook her head abruptly, trying to clear it.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan blinked. This was heavy stuff they were talking about, and he had no idea how to contribute to the conversation. He certainly didn't know what it was like to be collared, especially not with a collar that was magic. He reserved what judgements he made.
Since he was pretty sure that they had successfully talked her down, he released Gia’s shoulder and wandered a halting couple of steps to address Shade.
“Well... since he told us to go wander around, I guess we could go and grab my bag? I really should make those deliveries.” He looked down at himself. He had been cleaned up a bit at Lucy’s place, but his clothes were still ratty and torn. He frowned. He wasn’t eager to confront Nolan about this, but he could probably slip in unnoticed and back out before anyone complained. “Or maybe I should get a change fo clothes first to avoid scaring people.”

He wasn’t eager to confront Nolan about this, but he could probably slip in unnoticed and back out before anyone complained. “Or maybe I should get a change fo clothes first to avoid scaring people.”
Re: The Fox and the Hound
"We'll go get your bag after you get changed. You have a spare set or do you need to borrow mine?" Shade asked flatly, rubbing his nose with the palm of his hand and sighing. "Gia, please stop growling. I've got a big enough migraine without you adding to it."
He sighed as he looked at Kitan and gave him a nod.
"You lead the way. I can't see worth a damn and I'm gonna use you as a bloody leanin' post."

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Gia followed them as they all headed off, still scanning and sniffing deeply, straining her ears for any sound of clanking metal. The man's hate fueled her and scared her - she hadn't smelled hatred that strong for what felt like years. And if there were more like that... how had he found them, anyway? And why did he seem to have it out specifically for werewolves? He'd had Kitan in his grasp until just letting him go with a bit of a beating. Not that a beating was something Gia encouraged, but it was better than the alternative.
"Change of clothes would be good," Gia muttered. "And I will not stop growling until I have that man dead under my paws."
He was Bad. Gia didn't smell pure Bad too often, but when she did she knew it like she knew the back of her paw. She didn't have much to do with this pack beyond wanting Kitan to like her and wanting Shade to get his head straight about what collars were, but this man was dangerous to not just her and them but all shifters. She did not want to see anyone killed for someone's stupid, flawed beliefs.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan frowned at her comment, “You’ll just make Shifters look violent and get yourself killed if you try anything.” He cautioned, but could already tell his words would fall on deaf wolf ears. Although he could admit it would be nice to make them pay, he threw in one more warning. “They are untouchable.”
He strode across the cobblestone street to the post office. He glanced across the street, which was fairly uncrowded. “Wait here. I’d rather no one saw all of us, considering... well, everything. I’m just going to slip in through my window.”
He scampered across the road, his bandaged feet making little noise even on the slick stone surface. The kitsune skidded to a stop at the base of the window and scampered up the side of the wall resembling nothing so much as a giant spider. His fingers found invisible handholds as he scaled the vertical surface.
Kitan reached his second story window (usually left open for exactly this purpose) and slunk through. He ran over to the dresser by his bed and grabbed out a second set of clothing. Kitan cringed, realizing that he only had one more set. The post office payed well enough, but only so much of that could go to accessories. He threw his old clothes onto the bed and began changing.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
As Shade waited below for Kitan to reappear he eyed up the passing females, mentally rating them of how their attractive was. Three, seven, eight, eight, seven..... one. The older woman with crooked teeth smile at him and he stared back. No. Just, no.
"I wonder what's taking the kid so long." Shade grunted as he glanced sideways at Gia. "Did you finally stop growling or am I going to have to muzzle you?"
He made it clear he still wasn't happy with her.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
"Nothing is untouchable," Gia murmured, shaking her head slowly. The wolf was mostly gone now, but Gia could tell the creature was still in her thoughts and voice and eyes. The wolf thought every pack could be killed or dominated. There were always more people to band together with. You could always find enough people unhappy with a situation who were willing to fight it... if they saw others doing the same.
She raised an eyebrow at Shade as she watched him watching the human females walk by. Unsubtle, not sneaky, and not caring, there was something about him that she grudgingly admired. He wouldn't get to know that, of course, but something in the way he could just accept what he was - or what he was hoping to be, Gia couldn't quite tell - was admirable to her.
Gia couldn't help but literally growl at the word 'muzzle.' People had tried to put those on her before too, but something made for a dog's or wolf's jaws was no match for the supernatural strength of a werewolf. "Try it," she said with a hint of a snarl. "Like you're not thinking what I'm saying. That man was Bad." The capital letter could practically be heard in her words.

Re: The Fox and the Hound
Kitan finished changing and loped gracefully across his bed to the window. A twirling tumble took him outside, where he then hung from the windowsill. He cautiously glanced down before dropping to the street below.
He landed right in front of the first story window. Apparently the new kid (Kitan couldn’t quite remember his name) Had been looking out of the window at the time. He stared out at Kitan, an utterly stupefied expression on his face. Unlike many of the messengers, he was fully human and a bit scared of the supernatural creatures he worked with. He was especially uneasy around Kitan, as he had not yet been informed of Kitan’s inability to shift.
The kitsune wore a mischievous grin and put a finger to his lips, the universal gesture for silence. He then darted back across the street to rejoin his friends. “Okay.” He said, smiling. “Let’s head off then.”
