Where'd your name come from?

Where did you get the name for your characters from? Did you make them up or were they inspired by something.

Mine- KoriStronghammer - My first name is Corey, and the Norse spelling is Kori, and since my character is Viking based, there ya go.

Bjorn- He's a bear shifter, Bjorn is Norse for bear.

Robert Gray- My middle name is Robert, and my last name is Graham. I changed it up a little.

I. Like. Zombies. I've got my zombie survival kit and everything. And a word of advice, crowbars don't make as good a head-smashing weapon as you'd think. They're kinda unbalanced, and tire your arms out. Hatchets are better.

As for my characters, Lily and Gauruk, I sort of picked Lily's name out of thin air. Gauruk is close to the name of a titan from the Scarred lands campaign setting. The titan was like a proto-god of gluttony, and I wanted a name having to do with hunger. So, there we are.

Also, I like to prefer the metal baseball bat. Aluminum can bend and everything, but they are pretty light. The ultimate Zombie gun if you must use a gun is a .22 Long Rifle.

Good, you recognize the band. It's a weird sound isn't it? Like Fiddler on the Roof meets Metalica. I've got a copy of the survival guide, which is part of the reason I prefer the hatchet. It's multipurpose.

Metarie came from a map of the US. It's a town in Louisiana. Metairie is the correct spelling, I think. I thought it sounded pretty. I also like Meridian.

hmm, Well, the name Arshad translates to, "he who is rightly guided.". I had orginally thought to name him Adskhan, which means prince, but I felt that was both to obvious, and didn't catch in my mind as easily as Arshad.

As for the secondary characters, Elene is greek, it means "to elope" I think you can guess why I named her that. And Haran, well thats just an ancient city in Turkey.

This is a cool thread idea, although my character names on Thar aren't all that amazing like some of my characters elsewhere. Anyway...

For Erryl: I'd been planning a character for another story. She was called Erryl and she was an albino princess. I liked the name, so I just used that, but if I'd decided I was going to make a male character before I registered, I'd probably have named him Erril instead.

Llynasura... I was thinking Cynosura (like the Greek mountain nymph) at the time. I really like that name, and the word "cynosure". Anyway, I just put a double-L on the front instead. Maybe I was thinking of Lloyd or something. In the end the name, Erryl Llynasura, ended up sounding kinda like some queer elfy fantasy thing - in a bad way. Too many Ls and Ys, but... whatever. It's good enough.

Arusa Nyll Lyrre. That's a good one. I actually did it to see if people would notice that I'd just taken Erryl Llynasura and written it backwards. Not too creative, but it works. Suits her and all.

Jeeko? Umm... it just sounded good, I suppose. Cabrijeekalion Noricraeding Cerber-Halle Bonriqua Gontriallith Linric Barauliosis is his full name. Those I just made up outta my head, because I enjoy making up names. It's meant to be a collection of all the names of all the families he's lived with. He originally had only the name Cabrijeekalion, or at least... as far as he could remember.

Also, I don't understand why people would name their characters after themselves. Why is this? Is it because you imagine these characters to be you? You're living your fantasy life through this characters, yes?

Dorcas : I was looking for a plain-jane sort of name. If you were to look in a baby name book, you'd find it is of Greek origin and means "gazelle," but that doesn't have anything to do with why I named her. I wasn't looking for meaning, just for a name that her parents might have given their baby. (Her middle name, Euryale, is a throwback to how her mother has the name of another Gorgon, Stheno)
Tansy: I don't really know. I just like the name of the plant and have always thought it sounded like a surname.

Buoyansie: If it's not obvious, this is the word "buoyancy" with a spelling variant. And Bosie is a nickname for this. All of Bosie's siblings are also named after forces of physics.
Vaporgate: I like coming up with gnome names. That's about it. Engineer-y sounding stuff.

Pagusel: Okay, so this is the greatest name ever. If you don't agree, you should double check that because you're probably wrong. I came up with it because someone suggested I name the character "Sekala" because it sounded "tribal," and I was like "that name and the bizarre reasoning being it suck ass." So I took it upon myself to come up with a name that was the polar opposite of "Sekala." The name is pronounced such that the stress is on the first syllable, and the first syllable rhymes with "spa." And lo I created the greatest name. Thank you.

Adamor "Morry" Ugarit Osrith: Tovia, who is gone now, actually named this character for me. I think Morry is the only thing I actually came up with on my own.

Sandelmingoblius Genene Blahkenschtanipon (Cat): Because I knew his alias would be Cat, I wanted to come up with a name so horribly long and stupid-sounding that it would sound impressive and simultaneously retarded when he introduces himself.

Zaskia "Stella" Cielum Eturnus: Zaskia is a variant of "Saskia" which is a name I like. "Stella" means star in Latin and I've always liked that name even though nobody else does, so I thought it sounded good for a prostitute. Cielum is derived from "caelum" which is heaven in Latin. Eturnus is derived from "aeterna" which is eternal in Latin.
I like Latin.

Hakujoumi: Since this character is from Japanese lore and is a "true" kitsune (pure blooded), I used one of the pieces of the lore that said kitsunes keep their real name a secret. I knew it had to be Japanese, and I didn't want something common, so I invented a name. "Hakujou" means cold-hearted or something in Jap and "Mi" is usually attached to female names to mean "beautiful." She always uses an alias anyway.

I name my characters with parts of my name because I feel I have a cool ass name.

Kori means hollow in Old Norse, either the hollow of land or a hollow soul. So, I thought it'd be cool.

Robert means bright fame.


Yea, I love me some Korpiklaani. The only problem with the hatchet is the shortness of the handle. Extreme close combat weapon.

Derin E'Dala is one of my standard internet names, the one that seems to have become default for my rp characters. So my first character here was either going to be called Derin or Nndaia (another of my net names) and Derin fitted better. I thought I'd made up the name for years until I reread an old book and, embarrassingly enough, realised I'd probably stolen it from a character called Khan'Derin... but whatever, I still use it.

Alina Drey just seemed like a generic fantasy-ish female name, although the character I thought it suited changed a lot during character creation. Owen and Sam were just generic names. I wanted Owen to be Alistair but we already had one, and he just... seemed like an Owen. Sam was originally Chris, but Sam suited a bird better. I used a gender-neutral name because I didn't actually decide on Sam's sex until well into character creation. My next character will probably be an Nndaia or Nndaio, a name I've been using for years put together from a constructed language I started inventing as a kid. They're the feminine and masculine forms, respectively, of "shining/glowing one".

[Frug]

Chrishton is a modification of Christhopher, which was initially his name in another setting years ago. Back when I was a more terrible writer, his name was Chaos, but that was a decade ago at least...
Belatucadrus is a celtic god.
Camulous I made up, and Cervantes is a traditional name.

Like many of you, I have a set of prefabricated names that I recycle for all of my stories/RPs. However, instead of representing specific characters, the names represent specific themes. Isaac is the name I chose for the theme of predetermination. Interestingly enough, 'Isaac' happens to be derived from the Hebrew term for laughter, which is the opposite of my name, Tristan, which comes from the Latin term for crying.

I made up Arcott because I like the way it sounds.
