Theuse couldn't keep a smile off of his lips as Lo'en took hold of her mug and raised it in a toast—her reaction made him wonder if the bit on traveling hadn't just been to sucker him into sharing the room but at this point he brushed the thought off as just being paranoid. Grabbing his own drink, Theuse brought it up to the elf's and enjoyed the dull thunk as they came together. “Good food, restful sleep, and happy trails.” he said, it was a traditional toast somewhere (he memory of the event and place were a little fuzzy...) and one he enjoyed. Pulling his mug back, Theuse took a long pull for luck. “Now we can only hope that our third party has no trouble with this arrangement.” Come to think of it, Theuse had not seen Alcippe for most of the meal.

He scanned the inn's crowded main room, looking for the horse rider, and beginning to worry a little. Instead of Alcippe, Theuse caught sight of another young lady. Theuse's first thought was that he must be getting old, because all the girls were starting to look younger and younger to him, and his second thought was that the large man who was forcing her back toward a wall really had no place to be doing such a thing. Looking around, Theuse failed to spot any sort of tavern guard to deal with the problem; perhaps the innkeeper was too cheap to hire on some help? Regardless, this was not something that should stand. “Lo'en... I'll be right back.”

Theuse pushed his chair back, coming to his feet and trying to hurry across the bar while not knocking anyone over; the last thing he needed was to start a brawl. That made him smirk, because if he wasn't careful he was going to start a fight anyway. Theuse finally managed to get through to the pair before anything had progressed too far.

The young lady was speaking carefully, politely even, to the drunken thug who was harassing her; she didn't quite seem the damsel in distress and for a moment Theuse gave pause. Something about this struck him as wrong, but as she forced herself back against the inn wall he dropped that line of thought. No time for over-thinking! “Excuse me, but I believe she asked you to stop.” he begun, keeping a friendly voice as he tapped the big oaf in the shoulder to get his attention.

Gia threw a look of pure relief at her rescuer, though if he'd been able to read her mind it was more relief that he'd taken the bait rather than thanks for a savior come to shield her from the menaces of a drunken man. She recognized that she'd probably sounded a little too polite in her begging from the fact that her would-be hero had almost stopped and there had been something in his eyes... ah well. Gia just wasn't too great at the whole 'damsel-in-distress' thing. Though, she soothed her slightly bruised pride (wounded from pitiful lying or from acting helpless, she wasn't quite sure), most werewolves probably weren't.

"Thank you--" she began to say, but apparently the man she'd paid to threaten her, whom she'd decided to name Brutus in her head because of both his oafish nature and his seemingly unstoppable one-track mind, had secret aspirations to the theatre and so continued with his menacing of Gia. He snarled something at Theuse, slapping the smaller man's hand off his shoulder. Gia mentally sighed, but perhaps it was for the best that the act carried on.

"T'hell ye want'n, eh? T'ain't none o'yer business!" He shoved Gia tightly against the wall, left hand pinning her arm beside her waist and right hand leaning heavily on her shoulder. She let him, though she couldn't contain a slight whimper of pain as his fingernail jabbed the soft spot of her inner wrist, right where the tendons and veins ran close to the surface. She'd had that done before and had employed the trick on others as well, but it hurt nonetheless.

Well, she reasoned, at least it was slightly more realistic now. She turned pleading eyes to Theuse, letting slip just a touch of the wolf's puppy-dog side as she did so. Her eyes were golden and pathetic looking, she knew--she'd practiced in front of the mirror before.

"What the... " Lo'en trailed off, her words falling on absent ears. She was not so inebriated that she couldn't follow Theuse's intended destination as he took off across the Inn. The scene echoed of the previous night's encounter... the disfigured but gentlemanly Zou stepping in to intercede between Aura and her would-be attacker. Something was different here, though...

The half-elf pushed herself to her feet, swaying just a bit as her hastily imbibed beer and a half decided to circulate more freely in her system as she moved. Her focus on the details of the situation was impaired by the alcohol, causing her to lose track of her initial distrust of the situation. Creature comforts quickly asserted themselves in her slightly fogged mind, and Lo'en ambled her way to the growing scene. She'd be damned if she spent another night in the streets because the bumbling Theuse wanted to save the darling ... waif.

"Excuse me, pardon, 'xcuse... move it!" Lo'en shoved her way through a closing crowd. How come the bar types always wanted to close in on fights? She reached the scene just as the oaf was slapping away Theuse's hand and moving in on the waif.

"You," the half-elf addressed the Oaf with some authority, drawing her entire 5'5" frame as tall as she could make it. "Stop disrupting th'nice atmosphere. Sh'don't want you, case y'didn't catch it th'first time. You're makin' it'our business by causing all th'ruckus, so if y'd kindly leave, we'd stop both'rin you."

Despite her slightly tipsy state, her disheveled appearance and angry, piercing grey gaze caused Lo'en to appear just scrappy enough to cause some hate and discontent. What would have truly arrested anyone paying close attention to the half-elf was the strangely daring, almost crazy glint that tinged her ever expressive eyes and her general body language that made her seem as if she had not a grain of caution in her body.

Theuse grimaced, failing to keep the pain from showing as his hand was more smashed than slapped away by the drunken thug. He was a big man, probably worked as a guard or some similar profession that took more brawn than brains. That said, Theuse had more of the latter than the former and a hit from this bruiser would leave him hurting for a while. The arrival of a drunken elf did little to help, Lo'en seemed suitably fierce but more often than not the inclusion of more drunks into a situation caused it to deteriorate. Still, it gave the appearance of numbers and tipsy or no, the slight woman was suitably fearsome.

“Come on, there is no need to cause a scene.” Theuse said again, dropping any pretense of politeness while trying to get through to the oaf. “Head back to your table, get yourself some good food and another round. We are hardly worth the trouble it would take someone like yourself.”

Theuse hoped he could persuade the thug, because he just realized that he had left his sword under his table and his dagger next to his plate; he inwardly cursed not at least bringing along some steel to supplement his muscle. It might have proven just the edge he needed, being armed usually said something to most barroom toughs. Instead, he had an inebriated elf and an attentive crowd. This did not seem like it was going to end well.

Gia gave an inward smile of glee, though she was careful to keep an expression bordering on terror on her face. Excellent. If Lo'en got involved it would give her even more of a chance to befriend the elf. Listening to Lo'en rant at Brutus she almost cringed, hoping that she would get a warmer reception. However, she needed to deal with the problem at hand first, without creating a huge scene or resorting to drastic tactics like sprouting fangs and a tail and attacking.

The irate half-elf seemed to have something of an effect on the brutish man, but not enough. Dammit, Gia thought. I just needed a less-than suspicious way of introducing myself. Why can't I ever think these things through. Brutus leered even more at Gia, then looked around at the half-elf and human. "Thought I told ye t'git outta here. Git yersel' out too, little girly," he commented to Lo'en. "I ain't gonna hurt a girly."

You never do think things through, do you idiot human? The wolf commented at the back of Gia's mind. Shut up, the girl thought grimly. If I wanted your opinion I'd ask. She shook her head mentally, chiding herself for listening to the voices in her head again. She managed to suppress the lupine glare the wolf was longing to throw at Brutus, repeating the helpless damsel montage in her mind. "Please, sir, just let me go. I really wouldn't like a fight started over this..." Gia put as much begging into her voice as the disgusted wolf would allow.

The Oaf wasn't budging. Again, that sensation that things were not what they appeared niggled at Lo'en's subconscious. The dream image of the other girl with a torn dress fleeing flitted across her mind's eye, and for the briefest moment, the magic null around the half-elf diminished. Almost in the same instant, that null returned like a flame blazing back to life- instead of exuding light and heat, it was a vacuum for magical energy.

Lo'en blinked and shook herself slightly, but refused to mentally chase down that feeling. Instead, she turned back to the scene at hand. The Waif was pinned against the wall and there wasn't anything in close reach to grab as a weapon of opportunity. The half-elf suddenly grinned, half from the sheepish feeling in her gut. She drew her long utility knife from its sheath behind her back. It wasn't particularly long, its partially serrated blade only the length of her hand, but it was sharp and looked worn, and Lo'en handled it with a familiarity that wouldn't be lost on the Oaf.

"I really hate being called 'girly', " she said amiably, as if discussing the weather.

Theuse look back at the weapon that Lo'en drew, at first horrified and then overjoyed. He first felt that the addition of weapons to a drunken elf could not improve matters, but it might be just the sort of threat he needed to get through to the oaf that had the young lady pinned. The problem would be passing her off as dangerous and not drunk. Thinking fast, Theuse returned his attention to the problem at hand and put on his best wicked grin.

“She really does hate that name,” he added cheerfully, praying the thug couldn't tell he was lying. Theuse was always a bad liar. “The last time a man said that to her she took off his hand. Perhaps you should just say sorry and move along? I am sure the inn keeper would rather not be cleaning blood out of the woodwork.”

Theuse was sure that even this drunken sod could understand what he meant, if not then he might just let Lo'en carry through with that knife of hers and just give him a more permanent reminder. He threw the young lady a wink, hoping to let her know that it was going to be okay. Of course Theuse wasn't sure if that was true, in fact he was afraid that this would devolve into a fight and that somebody would end up dead. That was the last thing he needed, to be running out of Marn with the city guard at his heels.

“Well, what do you say?” he asked, not letting his grin go.

Gia breathed a slight sigh of relief when the oafish Brutus backed off at the sight of the knife. She hadn't paid him that much, after all, and he wasn't as drunk as he should be before facing down an irate elf with a serrated blade. Gia knew from experience that serrated was much worse than a straight-edged blade.

The man made a strange motion, as though he was going to fight a bit more, but then released her wrist. He let a sort of grunt escape, a kind of 'fergit this' sound, then glared over his shoulder as he backed away to the bar.

Gia let her breath out in a larger whoosh than her previous sigh, partly to help control the disgusted wolf. But then--Gia tensed slightly. Where was the wolf? The ever-present voice in the back of her head, the sense of two minds in one--it was gone. She blinked slowly, trying to control her slight panic. She knew she could still change, that was inherent in her body at all times. She could feel the shifter magic, smell it on her clothes and from her body, but the wolf was out of her head.

Control the panic. That was always the thing the wolf had taught her, so she rolled her shoulders using the pretense of relaxing after the oaf had grabbed her. "I thank you both," she said, only slightly shakily. "I... didn't expect someone to grab me like that, and if you two hadn't come along it might have been worse. Things are more civilized where I come from--a girl can sit and not be bothered." Granted, that was in Zhaltev where the majority of the population were shifters and could look after themselves, but these two didn't need to know that.

The half-elf lowered her knife as the Oaf ambled away like a disgruntled, non-aggressive bear. She looked at Theuse, more astonished than elated that their bluff had worked. Never one to question her luck, Lo'en quickly turned to the Waif. She leaned closer, subconsciously sensing the sudden surge of fear that had been absent during the entire scene. The girl was muttering something non-convincing, and her shakey words were not a result of the rough treatment from the Oaf. She huffed as her mind again shut out the needling, fleeting perceptions, turning on her heel abruptly as if disgusted with the girl.

"There's plenty o'room at th'table we're at," Lo'en waved her knife absently, not bothering to turn back to the Waif she was addressing, already half way back to her seat. "I'm sure Theuse will want you t'join us for th'time being t'stave off any retaliatory second-wind assaults." There was more than a hint of sarcasm in her open invitation, though it was not biting enough to be a blatant rejection.

Theuse clutched his grin like a drowning sailor, waiting until the brute passed before letting it slide and sighing in relief. He wondered for a moment whether or not it would have been better to mind his own business, but the thought was soon quashed. He couldn't have just let that stand, it would have left him guilty and the young lady in trouble. He missed her moment of conflicted muttering and panicked look as he looked toward Lo'en.

As the elf started to move back toward the table and spoke he scowled, not sure if it was what she said or how close it was to the truth. Theuse knew he would feel better knowing that the young lady was safe for the moment, besides there was room since Alcippe had left. Turning, he smiled at the young lady and nodded toward her, as though she needed the reassurance.

“I hope you can join us, we were just sitting and enjoying a bit of food.” he gestured toward the few near empty plates.

Gia had recovered enough to smile at the invitation. "I thank you again. My dinner was interrupted, as you see..." She picked up her plate and bowl and followed the two over to their table, which wasn't horribly far from where she'd been sitting anyway. She moved economically, with a quietness most humans couldn't accomplish. She sat with a whisper of fabric, looking perfectly comfortable in a dress.

Taking a bite of her stew she looked over her two new companions. She'd judged the human male correctly--rash and heroic, or at least he tried to be. Heroic, that is. She could smell the tint of fear hanging over him like a cloak made of silk or linen. It was faint, but nevertheless there. She couldn't blame him. If she'd been a human, she'd be slightly terrified too of a huge hulk of a man that you were on the receiving end of displeasure from.

"Where are you two from?" She asked as she ate slowly. Then she realized she'd forgotten to introduce herself and added hastily, "My name is Gia."

Lo'en watched somewhat guardedly as the Waif approached. She seemed to be a contradiction- her timid, cautious mannerisms were paradoxical with the unconscious grace and smoothness of her movements. The girl didn't appear much more disheveled than the half-elf's own current state, but there was an underlying wildness that put her out of place in the city.

These observations did not come as easily to Lo'en's normal perceptions, alcohol fuzzed mind causing her to stare just a little too long at the newcomer trailing Theuse. Tearing her grey eyes from the newly introduced Gia, Lo'en sat back and started to work on her next set of arrows. Fortunately, she was accustomed to the chore and her fingers worked nimbly, for the most part, on their own. She would have no issues being able to churn out 5 quivers worth of arrows, provided she eased off the beer and no further interruptions presented themselves.

She kept silent, waiting for Theuse to make the first reply.

Theuse frowned as Lo'en began to work, starting the process of turning simple wooden shafts into deadly weapons, and declined from answering Gia's question. He wondered for a moment what it was that made the elf not like the new arrival; she had seemed rather personable before when he first bumped into her. Then again, Theuse couldn't say he really knew the woman, so maybe Gia just rubbed Lo'en the wrong way. Whatever the reason, he figured that at least he could be polite and keep the conversation moving.

“My name is Theuse Del'Sir, I am a traveler from the Green Isles north Trelham, in Eyropa.” he said, taking the last swig of his drink and smiling at the taste. “I have been traveling all over for years, though, so I really don' t have any place that I would call home.”

Theuse felt the need for a little more food and some more of the ale, so he motioned for the serving girl. She came quickly enough through the crowded room, looking a little worried. Perhaps it had been the near-fight? Theuse mentally shrugged, deciding that she seemed all right, and instead gave her a pleasant smile before ordering some more bread and ale. “Would you like anything?” he looked to Gia.

"Well Theuse, it's very nice to meet you. And if you wouldn't mind getting me a drink... red wine, if you please." She was always safest with red, as it wasn't served chilled. For some reason, taverns liked to serve things meant to be cold in cups, glasses, or mugs with silver accents. She could never be sure if the silver was real or not until she touched it and it would burn. And then she would have a bunch of awkward questions to answer, and that was never fun. So she settled with a room temperature glass of red wine, which was a safer be than asking for her preferred cold drinks.

She was troubled by Lo'en's silence. Perhaps the half-elf was merely unpersonable, but she'd had a somewhat troubling calculating expression on her face when she'd looked at Gia. It wasn't like people could tell she was a werewolf flat out--experienced people, those knowledgeable in the behavior of shifters in both forms could tell if they gave it a little thought. But Master Tuc would have warned her if the elf was an expert shifter hunter, and warned her that she should take precautions.

Smiling slightly at Theuse she watched the elf out of the corner of her eye. "And your name?" She tried.

The half-elf noticed things. Even with a slightly alcohol befuddled mind, she noticed the eager yet benign way her new male acquaintance looked at the waitress. She noticed the Oaf lurking at the bar, passing disgruntled looks their way every so often. She noticed the horse woman slip in from outside and slink upstairs without stopping by their table. She noticed Theuse buying Gia a drink. And she noticed the Waif trying too hard to be friendly.

Perhaps it was the dense population of the city that caused her to be more wary than typical. Perhaps the beer had some side effect of paranoia. What if her suspicions were simply just from paranoia? Lo'en frowned- her initial gut feelings were typically correct, why was she self-doubting now? Her grey eyes would have displayed her turmoil and wariness as clearly as if her feelings were written on her forehead, had they been not fixed downward, as if scrutinizing her menial task.

"Lo'en Jaspenellar, a queer name I've been told," the half-elf looked up very briefly, twisting a passable wry grin in an effort to appear more amiable. She quickly looked back down at her current arrow. "My parents have a goat farm in th'far North, barely in th'limits of Thar Shaddin, but I've been traveling for quite some while now too. Are you from the city here?"

Her last question was undoubtedly baited. The waif-like girl seemed no more at home in the urban environment than herself or Theuse. The half-elf had spent too much of her time in the wilderness to not recognize the untamed aura Gia exuded.
