language question

Post by Talion » Wed Oct 29, 2008 10:18 pm

Hello everyone, I am a new person and had a new person question. I was wondering if the different races speak different languages? My character is an elf who has spent little time in the company of humans, so I thought it would make since if he spoke a form of Elvish mixed with English. Is there a set language for elves that I should use?

This question is best directed at Metarie, and I will prod her for her input when I see her next.

Yes, the various races do have their own languages and the language barrier does not only cut between races. Humans in Eyropa speak various dialects of Eyropan, and even have pockets where they primarily speak their own languages. Tian Xianians also speak their own set of languages.

There is an Elven language which is spoken on Darleone island.

In order to make historical sense, they don't speak English in Thar Shaddin. They speak a dialect of Eyropan which is heavily influenced by Elven. So if your character speaks Elven mixed with Eyropan, he wouldn't have much trouble understanding Marnians.

HA! Frug didn't have to prod me :D

Talion,

I use two resources for the Elvish language Metarie speaks. The first is from the Grey Company (http://www.grey-company.org/Circle/language/phrase.htm). The second is Jhonen Olain's Eberron Journal http://www.coveworld.net/eberron/aerena ... lator.html.

I suggest you include a translation as an OOC comment so we can still read your posts :)

Looking forward to reading them.

Thank you very much. What I had meant though by saying speaking in English was that I would use only English words and imply that he is speaking in a different language. I don't plan on using a lot of non-English words I mostly just want them for swearing and the like.

Oh! Well, that works, too! You could use italics to indicate he's speaking in Elvish and just call it out. You know like, in his native tongue Talion said, "boo"

or some such. :)
