Forgotten Faces
Drake pushed harder against the invisible force that was keeping him away from the mage that was idly walking nearer. He stopped with a defeated sigh and turned to look at his friend.
"Cody, I'm sorry I didn't tell you. Surely you can understand why the other half of me didn't. You would have left, and neither half of this soul enjoys being alone." Fully expecting Cody to hate him forever, Drake resumed his attempts at getting to the mage.
The man shook his head mockingly as he struggled more and more. Drake pushed his sword hand forward and the rapier slipped past the invisible barrier until his hand struck it. Drake stepped back with a wicked smile of his own, and before the mage could speak another word a dagger plunked into the left side of his chest up to its cross guard.

Cody
Cody was now not only terrified but confused. Drake did have both halves of his soul, but separate? What was the difference than being normal then if he still had both parts? So one side gained control at points more than the other? Wasn't that how things worked normally? Sometimes emotion over came logic, or was that something most people didn't face?
Cody shook out his head figuring that wasn't really very important at the moment. What was important was that the skeleton's were on the other side of the doorway, and the mage was on this side.
"So what...we don't care. Right Drake? It's not important is it?" Cody knew Drake wanted to know his past, but Cody was positive it wasn't as important as getting out of here.
Cody watched as Drake's dagger went into the man's chest and waited for the next action...would that stop the mage or would he still attack? The skeleton had tried to attack after losing half its body.
Can't go backwards...can't go forwards...but needing to go. Cody paced 7 steps to one side of the wall then spun around walking approximately the same distance on the other side. "out...out..." he whispered the words to himself, this single minded thought was completely filling his mind as the only thing of importance. One eye was still on Drake, but hardly any attention was really given to his actions...only the smallest reminder of a reason to try and remain calm.

The smile melted off Hamgrint's face as he watched the dagger fly towards him. Everything seemed to slow to a snails pace as the little blade meant to kill him followed its path faultlessly. He watched as the little bit of light in the room glinted off of its angled edge. Almost pointlessly he tried to move out of the way, but in the end he only succeeded in narrowly escaping a quick death. "How could I let him figure out the shields weak point?" he though to himself as he watched the tip of the blade crease the fabric of his flowing robes.
As the blade pierced the first layer of his flesh time returned to its blinding speed. In what seemed like the span of a single breath, the blade was buried deep in his chest with a hollow thud.
He groped at the hilt of the weapon with quickly numbing fingers. He could feel the warmth of his life blood slowly trickling down his chest. The pain was strange, almost exquisite. Hamgrint collapsed to his knees.
The weakening of his physical self meant that his magic would also be weaker. The shield that had failed him still stood, but now it only held a few feet away from him. His skeletal guardians were also affected. The larger portion of them, the fledglings of the group, simply collapsed into dust in the other room. However, there were still half a dozen, Hamgrint's original batch, the ancients among the small army of undead beings, still stood. The ones that had survived the weakening of their master now marched into the room, free of Hamgrint's control and out for blood. Hamgrint laughed evilly, "You two will die here, but you will hear what I have to say before you do."
The skeletons now stood still, blocking off the only exit from the room. It was more an act of habit. They had lived for many years following the commands of the voice that now spoke, and they would most likely continue to stand as silent sentinels until his speech was broken. He continued his little tale.
"Oh Drake, my boy, you were a mess when I found you. You were roaming everywhere taking odd jobs and killing whomever you must to survive. I saw some potential in you, so I hired you to run errands at first. You fetched my meals and spell ingredients faithfully, just like the lap dog you are. Then, one day, I had you retrieve something to be used in a far more important mission. The gnome made "Soul Capsules." Hamgrint watched as his enemy twitched in anger.
"Oh yes, you took the tubes and you did your job well. You found the fastest stallion in all the land, chased it until it collapsed from exhaustion, slit its throat, and captured its soul within one of the tubes." Hamgrint smiled wickedly as Drake looked at him with a look of hatred and then at his friend with a look of despair. "Then you went after the strongest warrior anyone could find. Knowing you couldn't best the man in combat, you took the cowards way and smashed him under a boulder." Hamgrint laughed derisively.
"Those two souls were melded to form the young horse to human shifter that now stands before us. You were quite proud of how well you did your job too. You even went so far as to have a bard compose a little ditty about it. It goes something like 'One fast as the wind, one stout as the stone.' I can't recall it's something like that."
Hamgrint coughed violently. He wiped blood from his mouth and stared at it for a long moment. He knew something was going on in the chamber, but he paid it no mind. What mattered now was this strange sinking sensation he felt.

Drake listened involuntarily as the mage talked. His whole body was shaking with rage. He couldn't speak, he couldn't move; all he could do was stare beams of pure loathing into Hamgrint and occasionally look over at Cody in an almost pleading manner.
Drake finally realized that the skeleton guards had entered the room. It seemed as if they had been ordered to stand in that one place without a single movement. As Drake watched them out of the corner of his eye he could not spot a solitary twitch of defiance in any of them.
He looked back just in time to see the mage collapsing to the floor. He heard the skeletal guards moving behind him at almost the same time. "Cody, unless you feel like fighting, I'd suggest getting behind me," Drake said as he slowly turned to face this new threat, "Also, do me a favor and go get my dagger, would you?"

Cody
Cody shivered as the man was talking, at the tone of his voice and the threat of their death. Cody shook his head and spun around and started to run towards the door. In midstride he froze and looked at the skeletons blocking his path. Cody back peddled several steps, moving closer into the room staring at them in horror. Hadn’t one been bad enough?
Some part of Cody’s mind continued listening to the mage speak, but he wasn’t watching him. His eyes were focused completely on the skeletons that blocked his escape. His stomach twisted and clenched feeling as if he should defend Drake for the way the man described him, as if he were nothing but a dumb animal. When the mage started talking about the horse and how it had died Cody turned his head slightly stunned by this fact he didn’t particularly want to have. People kill horses for sport, horses in wars might very well die for being in the wrong place because of their riders, they might die early by bad treatment and abuse, these were things that happened and would always do so, a thing to accept. This horse had its sole stolen from it, that was wrong, far worse than pointlessly killing an animal for sport and then leaving.
Cody shook his head, “no.” it was just barely whispered, his head darted back to the skeletons. He gave them a defiant look, took a step forward then backed up as his fear of being hurt over took him. The mage was still talking…strongest human? Well if this was true Drake had sure screwed up. Cody wasn’t a very impressive looking human when it came to brute strength, on top of it Cody was a coward not some valiant brave warrior. A warrior would charge past these skeletons…and Cody’s shivering frame wanted nothing more than to get past those skeletons towards the exit.
When the man collapsed Cody was still staring at the skeletons, listening to his own heart beat. Fear of the skeletons warred with fear of understanding what the mage just said. Cody shook his head seeming unaware of Drake speaking to him. “no…no…” These words were not meant for Drake, however he should take him. Cody shifted into his horse form, inwardly still repeating this denial of what he heard. He had to escape from the skeletons, from the possible truth, and he knew only one way to escape.
Cody did a prancing trot in a tight circle, throwing his head wildly then ignoring the skeletons coming straight at them charged towards the exit. Should any get in his way he would run straight through them, but he certainly had no intention of trying to hit anything…all he wanted was to get to the exit and leave. Leaving was the only thought on his mind…

Drake watched Cody pacing in his horse form. The logical part of his soul screamed useless rebellions in the back of his mind, but the part that had control for the moment thought it a great idea.
Using the fact that the skeletons were distracted with this new, larger enemy, Drake ran backwards to the body of the mage and retrieved his dagger on his own. Without a seconds thought he flung the dagger at the skeleton nearest his friend. The blade thudded into the thick bone right were the rune was carved in the skull. The skeleton fell to the floor with a clatter.
"Cody, if you decide to make yourself useful, aim for the rune on the skulls. Destroying that seems to put them down."
Drake hurled his other dagger at one of the remaining skeletal guards to test his theory. With another hollow thud and clatter of bone it too fell to the ground.

Cody
Cody snorted the closest thing he had to having heard him, but in the end he didn't bother much aiming...he still had to get out of here. He charged through the exit, feeling the hooves crush under the bones of the skeleton Drake had just 'killed.' Cody charged back into the room they had previously built in, and just nearly straight into the sealed door. Cody screamed at the door in frustration, it was blocking his way out...and he needed out.
Cody reared and spun around to charge back towards the room Drake would be in. Cody felt his balance shift for a moment as his one swollen shoulder resisted the treatment Cody was giving it. The back didn't like all the straining and flexing of the muscles either, but it couldn't threaten to collapse the way a leg could. Adrenaline is an amazing thing, it informed Cody that these issues were of little importance.
Logical thinking was near impossible at the moment for Cody, his mind swirled with terror and fury of his inability to escape. Drake didn't have to wait long for Cody's reappearance considering his full out gait into what Cody had defined as a small enclosure. This time he didn't run towards a blank wall but charged another skeleton this time rearing up to actually try and crush the thing. It wasn't that this made any logical sense on how to escape...only that it was a thing to do until the doors opened as he was well past any point of managing to stand still.

In the time that it had taken Cody to charge back into the room Drake had only managed to end one more skeleton. He felt a surge of hope as his friend's heavy hoof came crashing down on the fourth, ending its unlife. He took a swipe at the one of the two remaining ones, but it intelligently swayed back away from the blow and launched one of its own.
The rusted short sword the creature was wielding made a short, shallow gash in Drake's thigh. It wasn't enough to hurt him seriously, but it was more than enough to throw him into another fit of rage. He started swinging his rapier with such unbridled speed that even a true warrior would have had a hard time defending against it. After parting the death guard of three fingers, a rib, and a large chunk of it's hip bone, Drake finally managed to get a clean swipe at the rune on its head. It fell to the ground, leaving the final guard with now back up.

Cody
Cody charged towards the remaining skeleton, screaming a stallions battle cry as if he knew exactly what he was doing. He reared up in the skeletons face, felt the blade of the skeletons sword tear through flesh and a bit of muscle that connected shoulder to body, then the crushing blow of his hooves landing on the skeletons shoulders, knocking it to the ground. Cody stumbled as his leg landed to naturally support its share of the weight. Not yet...Cody's emotional torrent wasn't done yet, he reared again fully crushing the skeletons head under his hooves.
Cody stumbled, his front side going down, unable to handle the weight he had suddenly demanded it take. His adrenaline tried to keep him going, but pain was now fighting the tide. Cody stood back up, slowly his one front leg no longer fully touching the ground. His eyes caught sight of Drake, but currently he wasn't seeing a friend, only another thing to be hammered into the ground to make the exit open.
Cody took a step trying to charge but again faltered and nearly went down. The pain was enough to make Cody's mind clear enough that he took human form, he was still staring at Drake in the same way he had the skeletons. Cody shivered and took a step towards Drake, he felt the adrenaline leaving him and when it did he'd have to face all the realities of the world again including fear, best to finish things while he could. It was his only chance of escape...

NPC POST (yeah, he's not dead yet)
Hamgrint used the distraction of the fight to drag himself over to his work desk. A thin trail of blood marked his progress. He hoped against reason that neither of his enemies would notice him moving across the floor, so far he had been lucky.
He began to fear that he wouldn't make it in time; the two were already down to three skeleton guards. Two. One. As his creation's horse form's hooves crushed the final skeleton he felt the leg of the desk against his back. He smiled triumphantly.
With a shaking hand he carefully searched the top of the desk without seeing it until he felt the odd shape of the jar he had used for a particular potion tight in his hands. He watched as his creation changed form again and began to stalk its own ally. He was tempted to let the fool finish off his only hope of survival, but no, he could not allow that. He would not let someone steal his final glory out from under him.
He let out a hoarse laugh. "I may die in this wretched cave, but you two will go with me."

Drake had been warily backing away from his friend. The strange gleam in Cody's eyes had told him that something was not right. Now, however, he was rooted to the spot. The mage was not dead, and he had one final trick up his sleeve.
He turned to face Hamgrint. The man was leaned against the leg of his desk, cluthcing a strangely shaped jar of some glowing yellow liquid. Drake watched as the jar was loosed into the air, careening towards the large, blue glowing rune in the floor.
"Run," was all he said as he darted past Cody towards the other room.

Cody
Cody's head turned as the man spoke, the pointless noise he made turned into words, a bit more clarity came to his mind. He was exhausted, hungry, bleeding, had nearly attacked his own friend, and now the maniac mage was going to somehow kill them with the liquid in the jar.
Cody heard Drake say run, but it took a second longer for the words to impact him, his eyes were to busy watching the jar. A miniscule shake to his head and Cody turned and ran behind Drake, his head turning back needing to see the jar's descent, curiosity demanding to know what was going to happen.
Cody was running out of energy to be scared, he just wanted to find a place safe to give up and rest. Following Drake would hopefully get him this, but he wanted to know what new danger was going to be coming at them.

Drake hoped that Cody was close behind. He didn't know what was in that jar, but he did know that it couldn't be good.
He heard the faint sound of glass shatter followed by a very strange one. It was very similar to the sound that an air filled rubber ball made when it popped. The sound may have been small, but the force that followed it, however, was hellish. Drake felt his feet torn from the ground and saw the wall rushing to meet him. Everything went black before he knew anything else.

Cody
Cody watched the jar shatter...then made the mistake of slowing at hearing a sound he couldn't place. It was an odd noise that didn't belong. As he turned his head to look to Drake he felt an unseen force throw him from his spot and throw him up against the wall.
Cody heard the sound of Drake's collision only a heartbeat before his own collision with the wall right next to Drake. Cody whimpered for his last moment of awareness and wondered if Drake was alive. Then, letting go of problems, and struggles he gave in to the inviting blackness that demanded his attention, that let a coward once again run away from facing issues it should look into.

Drake had a strange sense of floating. His ears were ringing and his skin tingled. He wasn't quite sure where he was, as the darkness around him kept his eyes from seeing anything. A twinge of pain shot through his head. He tried to shake it off, but it only got worse. The pain eventually brought him back to reality.
He opened his eye to find himself laying in the chamber that he now presumed to be closed off entirely now that the magical explosion had caved the roof in. He tried to roll over off of his side, but something was pinning his arm to the ground. He blinked to clear his blurry vision, and found one of his dagger jammed into the stone wall through the sleeve of his jacket. He yanked the weapon from the stone, but the silver encasing of the tip stayed behind.
He rolled over to find Cody laying behind him, still unconscious. "Cody, wake up. Cody." He shook his friend by the shoulder. He was still breathing, but it didn't appear he was going to be getting up any time soon.
