Forgotten Faces
NPC POST
Stanguin had spent a few minutes outside the Central Inn. He had been informed by the two men he had hired that the man he was looking for, and an accomplice, had assaulted them in the tavern. He knew that there was only one place they could be, the inn.
He had walked inside and asked the first employee after someone matching the description. The man had given him all he needed, the room number, but something had happened. A large woman had come out of the kitchen after overhearing the conversation. She was swinging a heavy skillet at him screaming "You leave him alone." After a short scuffle he had managed to subdue her with her own weapon.
As he neared the top of the stairs he heard someone bracing the door. He slammed against it hard. It bowed in a little, but didn't come open. He slammed against it again, but it still didn't open. Whoever was against the other side was pretty stout.
He knew he couldn't just stab the person through the door, what if it was his mark. He had been told to bring the man back alive. So, he slammed against the door again. This time it opened a little, and he shot his arm through the gap.

Drake felt his shoulder bruising from the continuous impacts. The person hit the door and he slipped a little. A big burly arm, covered in sweat slicked hair, shot through the gap. Drake, using his hip to keep the door from opening more, leaned back and slammed against the door hard. He was rewarded with a scream of pain. He did it again, and was again rewarded.
"Cody! Quick, get the bed and slide it up against the door!" Cody hesitated a second too long for Drake's liking. "NOW!" He shouted. The man on the other side of the door was slowly but surely forcing it further open, and every second counted.

Cody
Cody's head had jerked up as the action started. He felt his body trembling as the door was struck with only Drake stopping it from breaking open. "Drake?" What was happening, who was trying to break in? What were they suppose to do?
Cody's body quit trembling at the initial order of pushing the bed. Take action! He wanted time to think on this, but again the order came. Perhaps more from the habit of accepting orders than actually making up his mind he took the few quick strides to the bed. Fear can lend an amazing amount of strength and the bed moved quicker than he ever expected he could push it. "Who is it?" Somehow, obviously Drake should have this answer.
Out! Out! Cody got the bed to the door, his head turning to regard the balcony. It did appear to be the only way out. Scared, he turned back to look at Drake hoping he had a plan.

Drake watched nervously as Cody slid the bed into place. Hopefully it would be enough to give them the necessary time. He turned to face the door and kicked it as hard as he could. He heard, quite literally, the crunch of bone. He turned back to the room.
Cody was standing there looking at him expectantly. He grabbed his friends arm and led him out to the balcony fast. He grabbed up his rapier and slid it back into it's scabbard. He was shocked at himself for leaving it there while he slept, but now was no time to be angry with his forgetfulness.
He turned and looked into Cody's eyes as commandingly as he could. "Grab hold of me. If you hang on tight the slow fall spell will effect us both."

Cody
Cody followed, this time no where to race off to that would get him ahead of Drake. Cody cringed a half step away from Drake's voice for a moment but then seemed to come to himself to remember where the fear was truly suppose to be placed. His eyes were still wide, he turned his head to stare at the door expecting their death to come closing in on them at any moment.
Cody felt himself shaking but then his mind seemed to finally accept and acknowledge the order he'd been given. Staying behind Drake he wrapped his arms around his mid-section. Drake could feel the small shudders running through Cody's body. He wasn't bothering thinking up words but bobbed his head to try and show he was ready to get out of there.

"Now, whatever you do, don't let go. If you do, the spell will stop effecting you." He stepped up onto the table and put one foot on the railing that wrapped around the balcony. "Another thing, when we get down, don't run off. I have a plan, but you have to stick with me for it to work."
He closed his eyes and focused the spell. After a second he felt himself become lighter, and leaped over the railing, pulling Cody along with him. They slowly drifted down to the alley below. He heard the bed scrape across the floor in the room above and behind them.
Drake looked up and saw a battle-scar covered face looking down at them. A few seconds later they touched down, he quickly dispelled his charm, and started toward Main Street. He looked back up at the balcony to see that the man had disappeared. He turned and started quickly in the opposite direction. He slammed hard into Cody, who had been right on his heels.
"Come on," he said in a loud whisper, "this way. We're going back into the Residential district." He hurried around Cody and took off at an even trot for his destination of choice.

Cody
Cody had absolutely no intention of letting go! His muscles trembled tightening their group to an almost painful intensity around Drake every now and then as Cody futiley tried to remain calm.
Don't run. Don't run. Cody repeated it over to himself. Of course with each thud of his heart he felt the urge to take off running. Did Drake understand what he was asking of him?
When they landed Cody had in all honestly nearly bolted. He felt his body trembling, trying to suppress what every fiber of his body was telling him to do. Still he had stayed with Drake, right on his heels and not getting a step ahead. His head jerked back with his body as Drake rammed into him.
Cody snorted deeply, trying to vent this fear that he wasn't permitted to get away fully from. He followed after Drake, pulling ahead at points then painfully forcing himself to back down. Someone...someone had purposely come after them. This was different than the tavern, Cody's mind lept to all sorts of imaginary fears. Of course his owner's wife was there amongst every fear he had. She had been in his fears when his owner had been alive...so he gave it little credit except for the nagging that was always there. She hates you...she's going to hurt you...better run!
Run! Cody started to sprint ahead of Drake picking up a good bit of speed. A few seconds later he came to a complete stop waiting for Drake. He had controlled himself somewhat...he could wait for Drake to catch up. No, Drake couldn't possibly understand what he'd asked of Cody.

Drake peeked around a corner. There was still a large crowd gathered in front of the Drunken Rat. "They're starting to thin out at least," he said to Cody, who was busy fiddling with the cloak he was wearing.
They had been crouched behind a building not ten paces from the blacksmith's shop for nearly a half hour now. The crowd was indeed thinning though. When they had first arrived it had consisted of over thirty people, now it was only a group of about ten.
He was starting to get impatient. "Why don't you just go now," the voice in his head asked. He pushed the rash advice from his mind, though he was a little more than tempted to take it. He mentally weighed his options without even knowing he was doing it.
"Alright, here's what we're going to do. We're going to cut across this clearing to the side of the shop. Then we'll make our way around to the front. We need to stay very close to the wall." He waited for a response from Cody. He didn't want Cody to be hesitant or unsure of the plan and get caught halfway between the buildings.

Cody
By this point Cody had decided he hated cloaks's, and with that thought ingrained it wasn't likely to go away any time soon. The cloak besides being confining also was only on when they were in trouble, this to was a good reason to dislike it even if it was not the fault of the cloak.
This frustration was mixed in with impatience and fear of someone finding them. He nodded his acceptance of the plan. "I'll stay near you," he had been going to leave it at that, but it seemed Drake would feel more comfortable if he added on the unstated, "and the wall."
Why did they need to be here? It was safer outside of the city, it made since to be outside of the city. Drake probably thought it made more sense to be here, and maybe it did. He was dealing with worrying about further down the line and of course his memories. Cody was more concerned about the now, especially since there was some unknown threat looming before them. The problem with having a friend for safety was when the friend led you into danger. Hopefully this friend wouldn't die.

Drake nodded and turned back to face the building he needed to get to. Ducking low to the ground, he moved as fast as he could to the back corner of the blacksmith's shop. He checked to make sure Cody was still with him and walked around to the front staying as close to the wall as he could without looking too suspicious. He opened the door and stepped through.
They were in, and without any problems. There was a wide shouldered man standing behind a sales counter looking at them in a strange manner. "Can I help you?" He asked.
"Yes, is Maximo in?" The man looked at Drake curiously. He then turned and walked through a doorway that Drake hadn't noticed before. He sat waiting for the man to return. He tapped his foot idly. "What's taking so long?" He thought out loud.

Cody
Cody followed right after Drake, true to his word staying only a step behind Drake. When they got to the other building he pressed himself up against it, then relaxed a small amount to try and act like Drake.
He was all to glad to get to the building but, once there realized that meant entering it. At the moment walking into a strange building wasn't what was on his preferred things to do list, yet he followed him in. Cody stayed mostly behind Drake when they walked in, though slightly off to the right so he could keep an eye on what was going on.
Cody kept thinking of how he didn't like this until the thought hit him of what a rude friend he was being. That made him pause for a few seconds to consider that possibility.
No, he still didn't like any of this!
Cody's weight seemed to constantly shift from his right to his left leg. His eyes would look to this strange man then off to another part of the room as if afraid the man would notice him. Of course if something happened he was subconsciously expecting drake would protect him.

Drake peeked at Cody over his shoulder only to see that his friend was even more impatient than himself. What was taking so long? He started to go through the door the man had exited through when he spotted someone coming.
In stepped the broad shouldered man and a woman with soot covered arms, hands, and face. "Wha' da ya wan'? An' make i' quick, uh ga' work ta be tended ta." The woman's accent caught Drake off guard almost as much as the fact that she was the Maximo he had been looking for.
"I'm sorry, but you're Maximo?" He asked tactlessly.
"Yeah, wha' of i'? Real name's Maxine Moturn, bu' ya'll be referrin' ta meh as Maximo."
"Oh, I apologize."
"Yeah yeah, uh said be quick." She twirled a small hammer in her hand impatiently.
"I was told that you might know where to find the mage that is living in the woods."
"Ol' Hamgrint. Yeah, uh know where ta fin' 'im. Follah tha ro' 'til ya come ta ah tree wi' the bark stripped from i's roots. "Thank you," Drake said turning to Cody with a smile. "What do you say we get out of here now?"

Cody
Cody had been scared before the woman came into the room, however now that she was here Cody had gone from fear to terrified. He had backed up without noticing till he was pressed up against the wall near the door. She looked dangerous. She was a woman, she looked strong, had a weapon in her hand, and she wasn't happy.
Cody wanted to whimper and leave but he didn't particularly want to be noticed and if she wanted to talk to Drake and ignore him that was fine by Cody. He listened to the talk but none of it was sinking in to well. The words that first sank into him where when Drake said it was ok to leave.
Cody shifted his feet to the door, thrust it open and stepped out faster as those legs would carry him. It was several steps out he remembered how Drake had been so careful about them being next to the wall.
Still, he stood where he was and watched Drake. All it would take is a simple nod from Drake to send Cody running at full tilt back to the woods. Wow...that was one of the scariest ladies Cody had seen yet!

"I'm sorry," Drake said earnestly, "I didn't know it was going to be a woman. It was an honest mistake, I swear. What kind of girl goes by a name like Maximo?" He smiled reassuringly at his friend. "Now, what do you say we go find this Mage and get some answers?"
