History:
Born in Tian Xia, in the city of Dalouxiu, Kenta Hikari had a strange childhood. First of all, his parents would constantly be telling him to not be afraid of the darkness, because the darkness was an all encompassing kindness. This, he found odd, because, as with all humans, darkness brings a sense of unease. The second part of this strangeness was the church that they went to. It wasn't really a church, just a building that no one went to. In there, many people spoke to each other, gave the usual greetings, and of course, would listen to the sermon of the Shadow Lord. This, he found even odder, because he was apparently never supposed to talk about these meetings or the Shadow Lord.
Later in life, Kenta Hikari wanted to be strong. Not for any reasons of pride or competition, but because he wanted to protect those he cared about, which was admittedly, not many. Kenta's parents also wished for their son to be strong. They saw a potential in him. However, the methods in which they appropriated this strength were different from each other. Whereas Kenta applied himself to martial arts, his parents went a different route. The Shadow Lord was brought to inspect and question the child, which made Kenta very uncomfortable. Then he was asked to change into the same robes he saw the higher ranking members of the church wear. And then the shadows came. The Shadow Lord is a shadow mage, and a very powerful one at that, drawing power not from the Astral Plane, but the Shadow Realm.
The Shadow Realm is a place where darkness is king, a dark counterpart to both the regular world and the Astral Plane. The Realm looks to be desolate, crumbling, lifeless, but instead of beings of various races, there are only the Shadow creatures. These creatures cannot survive outside of the Shadow Realm, and are thus no danger to anyone in the real world. As they are creatures made of shadow, they are mindless, even less so than magical constructed golems, as even golems have a purpose.
Seeing Kenta as a conduit for increasing both his power and making a new Shadow Mage under his teachings, the Shadow Lord had Kenta restrained. It is then that Kenta knew something was most definitely wrong. Shadows encroached upon his physical form, infusing him with darkness. While he screamed, he begged, he pleaded for anything to stop the pain. It did stop, at the cost of killing the Shadow Lord. Impaled upon spikes of darkness, the Shadow Lord was absorbed into the Shadow Realm, and subsequently, his own shadow power increased. After bidding his parents goodbye, he ran, but not far, as his only friend, Takeru Ishida literally bumped into him.
Takeru was one of the stranger people in Dalouxiu, at least amongst the people Kenta knew. The boy was always a kind-hearted person, and that is likely the only reason why he and Kenta ever became friends.
Takeru was really the only one that Kenta could confide in, and with this moment, he was sure that trust would run out. Instead, Takeru took Kenta back to his home, letting the him rest while he went to find someone that could fix this problem. What he found was a light mage, a more traditional mage, but a light mage none-the-less. Upon seeing Kenta, however, the light mage cast her most powerful light spell in a panic, putting Kenta through a screaming agony yet again. By the time Takeru had forced the light mage from the home, Kenta had already passed out, and was very much on his way to simply giving up. Of course, Takeru, the brash idiot he is, slaps Kenta. This is quite the stupid action to do in in most cases, but the sudden jolt woke Kenta up. It also revealed that the sudden burst of light magic tore most of the connection to the Shadow Realm away from the young boy.
Of course, one must always be wary of events that cannot be explained. For all intents and purposes, a burst of light magic to a creature of shadow should have killed it outright. Takeru was confused, but happily confused, and was quite willing to share in this happiness with Kenta. Kenta, however, was more readily confused, and that confusion made way to questions. Those questions led him to drag Takeru to the light mage's residence, where, after a rather awkward greeting and exchange, came the questions Kenta needed to ask.
"How did you learn that magic?"
"Can you teach me?"
"Are there others with the same powers as you?"
"Is there any way to fix my condition?"
The answers, in order, were "from an old master," "no," "yes, but I don't know many," and "I think that is all I can really do to help you, as is." Takeru found a purpose in these words, and immediately begged the light mage to teach him the ways of light magic. Reluctantly, and after Kenta asked for this help, the light mage agreed to take Takeru on as an apprentice. But his story is for another time.
Finding himself with renewed purpose, Kenta took it upon himself to travel, and fulfill his dream of becoming a great martial artist while looking to fix his condition. He already had training with boxing, and finding himself outclassed by those that perform kicks, he sought out a Savateur, to enhance his already powerful punches and give him a repertoire of fast and agile kicks. The savateur was, at first, reluctant to train a human with magical ability, no matter how small, the determination of Kenta finally made him give in. This did not please many of the savateur's students, taking it upon themselves to haze and harass Kenta at every opportunity. This happened for a while, until one day, a rogue fighter came to challenge the head of the dojo. An account of the incident was given.
It was an early morning, and the savateur was training his disciples in the ways of fast kicks, fast punches, and sneaky elbow and knee strikes. All of them trained together, except for one. Not out of a desire for loneliness, but out of necessity. This student, Kenta Hikari, diligent as he may be, is a target for the other students' ire, for the simple fact that he is a human with magical ability. While most of the other students simply ignore him, a group, led by Jonnet Réticon, would take it upon themselves to attempt to trip up the mage, so that he would be behind in his training. The savateur expected 1000 strikes per day, 125 for each hand, foot, knee and elbow. Kenta would always be behind at least 5 strikes, due to Jonnet and his group's harassment, and today was no different. One of Jonnet's men would toss something under Kenta's foot as it came back down from a kick, causing him to fall over. There is laughter, and the savateur turning to glare at Kenta. The young man simply stands up, sheepishly bowing before resuming his practice. The savateur shakes his head, resuming his rounds when a large man marches into the group, demanding to challenge the savateur.
This worked for him, until he found that those that get past his attacks are much more resilient. He continued his travels, finding a karateka willing to teach him. The karateka also gave him instructions on where to find another trainer, a wrestler. The sensei warned him strikers were susceptible to being grabbed, and the wrestler showed him just how that happens. Repeatedly. Kenta took these styles, and finding that some of his shadow magic could never be suppressed, no matter how hard he trained or tried, decided to combine the martial arts with his shadow magic. Kenta comes from all this training a new man, learning all those styles in nine years. He keeps contact with his teachers and the other students in the schools he was taught in.
He returns now to Marn, as he feels himself called there by an unseen force, perhaps connected to his shadow magic, and perhaps he can remove this magic from himself. Due to the shadow ritual event, Kenta views the battlemages not as a necessary evil, but as his saviours, people to be revered. As well, because of the way the government handled his situation, he has a respect for authority.
