Set near the historical district, the Rathole is a low key alehouse at the lower half of a two story building that has seen better days. The entrance is in the back of the building, with no sign to advertise its presence. The building was a rough, dark red pockmarked with age. No attempts have been made for upkeep; overall it looks abandoned at the best, and dangerously dilapidated at worst.
The establishment is tipped onto the better side of clean, and kept carefully on the proper part of the law. The lighting is low, all the better to hide what imperfections there are, and its patrons tend towards quiet sullenness. Brawls do not happen within the place. It is a place for talking, and relative safety.
The Rathole is the place malcontents and ne'er-do-wells go to meet, and within the past few years the Paragon has made it a capital of sorts for their secretive misdeeds. There is a third level - a basement - with a few rooms and an entrance to the upper levels of catacombs beneath the city. These are used for both stockpiling and discreet travel, though there is danger both of discovery and darker things down below.
Rathole Staff
Owner - Lord un Jeong, ???
The owner of the Rathole reputedly owns the whole building, and more buildings in and around the historical district. He is known to be quite wealthy, with his fingers in many pies, but no one has ever confessed to actually seeing the man. He has an arrangement with the Paragon, but it is reportedly a business move and nothing more. He is also well known by the Tattler and other papers around the city.
It is said he made his fortune from animal meat and products, and that he is a foreign trade prince from far eastern Tian Xia, beloved to some of those merchant caravans. There is talk of him being involved in a magical artifact smuggling ring, but it is an unsubstantiated rumor.
Barkeep - Jolan Renee, human
Jolan is a narrow man with a no-nonsence attitude. Kept well greased by the Paragon, Jolan keeps a hawkeye on everyone who enters the establishment. He keeps a list, or is said to keep a list, of names and details. He is not naturally suspicious, but acts that way. He has a sharp memory and an eye for details. It shouldn't be a surprise that he is meticulous about cleanliness, though he curbs his urges at the request of the Paragon.
He is black haired, brown eyed, and slender. He is middle-aged with bad teeth and a stiff knee. He is not the type to complain about pain, nor hard labor. He is a hard working man. He has deep set eyes and a strong brow, making him quite effective at glowering.
Cynea, elf & Lalo, human
The Rathole's two waitresses match its name. They are sullen and rude, though efficient under Jolan's watchful glare. They're given to snark and backtalk, and have the waifish skeletal build of hard users. Cynea has a pockmarked face from pox, and Lalo has a bust any woman would envy. Lalo also has the distended stomach of a woman fresh from pregnancy, though if asked it is widely known that her child is long dead. There are unfriendly rumors the child died from neglect, but it's best to not speak them around Lalo. She has a temper.
Cynea has the mellow dreamy demeanor of one often strung out, though she too raises hell when she hasn't had a fix in too many days. Both are young, and wily.
Rod, human
One would expect a large, perhaps oafish man to be a bouncer. Rod meets those expectations. He is a large, solid man who weighs heavier in muscle than fat. He is also simple and painfully honest, knowing no other way to communicate with others. He can tend towards histrionics when overwhelmed, and there is a space in the back for him to go when he has one of his fits. Reportedly Lord un Jeong took pity on him when he saw the man begging, and so he has a permanent job at the Rathole.
Lalo has a soft spot for Rod, and will keep an eye out on his moods and make sure he's eating. Some say Lalo's child was Rod's get, but it's probably best not to speak those rumors around Lalo, either.
Rod has thinning brown hair and green eyes. He was pretty once, until his right ear got torn off by a knife. The scar distorts his jawline.
Taktib, troll
The Rathole's other bouncer is the larger of the two, and also simple. Taktib's simpleness is that of a predatory creature, however, for his race is a canny one. Taktib is not sadistic, but he has cruel tendencies, like a cat that plays with its prey. He likes his job, and understands enough of the bar rules to not jeopardize it. He does not like anyone, generally, though he fawns over 'Misser Jong.' It is possible the Lord has taken Taktib along on some malevolent errands, but the troll isn't telling.
Taktib is a quiet, looming presence. He has gnarly tannish-green skin, a bulbous nose, tangled blue-black hair, and occasional drool when he's lost in his fairy thoughts. He has a severe underbite.
