by Sindaria
Player Name: Umbralore

Name: Sindaria (also Sin, Daria) Shipsbred

Age: 22

Race: Human

Height:
5'6"

Weight: 128 lb

Physical Description: Sindaria is a raven-haired, fair-skinned, waifish young woman with startling blue eyes framed by delicate eyebrows and set above angular cheekbones. Her thin-lipped rosepetal mouth is often pursed, or when she is amused, mischievously cocked to one side of her face. She reserves her warm, tooth-exposing smiles for family and close friends only, who call her Daria. She normally keeps her long hair pinned up and french braided in a crown about her head for practicality's sake. Daria moves on deceivingly long legs with a stalking cat's grace - thoughtfully, and sometimes even tentatively placing one elongate foot in front of the next. Her hands are similarly long-fingered and nimble in their work, though somewhat calloused from climbing. She dresses in modest yet close-fitting, non-descript clothing in drab grays and browns so as to blend in as much as possible with the unimportant (and unnoticed) populace of the city.

Possessions:

Brown leather sachel - carried over one shoulder, rather beaten up in appearance, with a false bottom to hide smaller stolen items in.

Basic rations and a dagger used for eating and cutting purses. Sindaria has a voracious appetite despite her size and doesn't go anywhere without the makings of a meal (e.g. bread, cheese, dried apple) on her person

Thieves blacks, mask, and silk rope with a small grappling hook - she does not normally carry these with her, but has a hiding spot for them in the storage room of the low-grade tavern she waitresses at (where her fence works), taking them on cat burglaries

Powers or Strengths:

Physical Precognition

Daria has the magical gift of physical precognition which manifests itself to a layman's eyes as extraordinary reflexes. In reality, she unconsciously senses where physical objects in her immediate surrounds (within 5 feet) will be a half-second into the future, and hence, can move to avoid or interact with them in an uncanny fashion. This ability does not allow her to precognize ranged attacks (physical or magical) and does her limited good against extremely swift close-range attacks. It is also subtle enough to have avoided detection thusfar by the City's law enforcers.

Natural navigator (City)

Daria has a good natural sense of direction and distance within the city. Once she has been somewhere once, she can generally find her way back again.

Minor sleights of hand

Daria has learned the basic tricks of thievery, including some palming, pickpocketing, and simple lockpicking. Her natural and magically granted grace works well for her in this pursuit, as she seldom brushes or jostles a mark to alert them to her true activity as she distracts them with her good looks.

Climbing skills

Her light weight and profession have lent themselves to training in the art of scaling up and down the sides of city buildings under cover of darkness (usually with some minor aids, though as her confidence has grown, she has begun performing simpler free climbs)

Weaknesses:

Poor judge of character

Daria's precognition does not extend to the realm of human relations. She does not "read people" well, aside from identifying potential marks, and often falls victim to errors in her assessment of people as trustworthy (or not), dangerous (or not), reliable (or not), or caring (or not). As a result, she has begun to adopt a position of cynicism with regard to her fellow man (and woman) and prefers to work alone to avoid surprises.

Untrained in the use of weapons

Daria has had no formal or informal training in the use of swords, bows, daggers, etc. She has survived mostly on the basis of avoiding conflicts, or, when caught in one, avoiding blows until she finds a way to escape or surrender. When she feels threatened, she seeks the companionship of stronger allies, though this often plays into the hands of her first weakness.

Petrified of the Fey/Attracted to Elves

Daria has a mortal fear of the Fey. Their revealed presence renders her precognition useless due to her overwhelming petrification. She is also especially attracted by Elves and is more likely to be deceived by Elven characters.

Superstitious regarding her Magical Power

Since it only recently developed and carries with it a dark foreboding, Daria is still untrusting of her magical power of precognition, as she likens the sensation of surrendering to her magical instinct to being "possessed" and "out of control". Often, she will unconsciously begin an appropriate action to an oncoming "event", only to consciously work to counteract the magical reflex in the next moment, as she can't understand why she is suddenly "spasming."

History:

Sindaria (known as Daria to her close friends and family, and Sin to her fence and a couple of desperate tricks she's turned) is a 22 year old mage in disguise as a thief/cat burglar. Her grandparents both hailed from Norroenirlund, but made their way to Thar Shaddin as trader/mercenaries. They found the local population in Marn incapable of pronouncing their Norreonirlundish name, and so, changed it to reflect the rough translation, making the family name in Marn "Shipsbred". Still unable to fight the prejudice against them and get loans to set up shop as honorable traders, the Shipsbred family soon turned to trade in items of a more questionably obtained nature. It was into this family of thievery that both Daria's parents, Daria's two older brothers, and then Daria were born.

Daria lived a relatively sheltered childhood attached to her mother's apronstrings, unaware of the family business. When there was work to be done, Daria was instructed to climb up into a tree or onto a low rooftop to wait until her family returned for her. The frequency of this work meant that she became and adept climber at a young age. She finally was recruited as a decoy and watchful rooftop sentry at age 9. Her eyes were literally and figuratively opened to a whole new world. Daria did her best to learn as much as she could from her mother about the female thief's tricks and trade until both her parent's retired to Shim. She was 15 and now alone with her brothers on the streets of Marn. Unlike her brothers though, Daria's mother left her with a small amount of coin to try and apprentice herself in a lawful trade - a matter that caused some jealousy among the siblings.

Being the least gifted in the family trade, and most naive, Sindaria was soon swindled of her money and forced to take work as a lowly waitress at a local tavern at 16. However, the job barely covered her meals (let alone board), so she remained a reluctant part-time participant in the family trade, sticking to simple vendor robberies during daylight hours under her brothers' watchful eyes. Winters will still tough for the girl, as her brothers adopted an "every man and woman for themself" attitude, and on a handful of occasions, Sindaria sold her body to obtain a bed for the night and the coin for a modest meal. It was during one of these trysts at 18 that she had an encounter with a male Fey that changed her life.

A tall ebony-skinned stranger with long dark hair and emerald eyes propositioned her on one particularly frigid evening, but when he brought her to bed, he revealed his true form - that of a 3 foot high, goblin-like, wizened old fey with blood red eyes. Sindaria refused to continue, infuriating the magical creature. He hissed that she would pay for her reticence in blood, but as he was grabbed her throat to strike his mortal blow, a new gleam lit his eye and he declared he'd foreseen a better vengeance.

"You have the 'taint' of magic in you, girl," he sneered, "and I will call it forth, but it will be to your own undoing, for I see all ends, and the magic I unleash in you on this evening will someday kill the truest of love of all your heart's years of longing." The foul little man kissed her then, in a manner that made her heart race and then swell with the pain of an unworldly fullness - as if it suddenly held more than blood. The unknown sensation surged then down her arms and legs, but instead of stopping at her toes and fingertips, seemed to bypass these physical barriers and bleed out into the room around her. She was suddenly hyperaware of her immediate surroundings - even the contours of the wall behind her back - and before she could make out what was happening, her spurned lover was gone. She slept poorly that night, and only understood the change in herself the next morning, when her every footstep somehow forebode how the next one would feel, allowing her to unconsciously dodge sharp stones and dog feces on the cobblestone streets without looking, and later, to unblinkingly catch a falling mug of ale after she'd distractedly bumped into a customer at the tavern.

It felt as though she was no longer the one steering her body - as if the goblinoid Fey had somehow left some piece of his taint in her, and the thought sickened Daria. She fought her new, quickened and unconscious reflexes for weeks, then months, but to no avail. The moment she stopped concentrating on the task, they once again began exerting their dark purposes. In time, a sort of acceptance of her new reality developed. Her hungry belly spoke louder than her scared memory, and she has began using her new power for short periods to aid her criminal tasks.

In the past 2-3 years, Sin's skill as a cat burglar has improved to the point where she has begun to secure a steady income and the coin to purchase more tools and clothing, and most importantly, lodgings. Her tastes still tend toward the simple and inelegant. She has few friends in the city, aside from her fence, who goes by the name Guster, and her brothers, Sef and Roan. Though not estranged, the siblings rarely see each other, as they have specialized in different sorts of crime, and Daria has worked to cut the strings tying her to her brothers.

Sindaria aspires to join Marn's secretive thieves guild, for all the opportunities and benefits it would offer. However, to do so would require revealing that she did indeed possess an unreported magical ability, and she fears the guild might blackmail her into jobs and roles she would be morally uncomfortable with. While by no means lawful, Sindaria has generally adhered to the family code over her years as a thief and has no wish to change that at the present time.

Hiya! Once again, welcome to Thar and thanks for the app!

The one thing that doesn't match our setting is
It was during one of these trysts at 18 that she almost became an unwilling victim to a vampiric customer with more than sex on his mind, leading to her current phobia.
as vampires are exceedingly rare and would be unlikely to come into the Marn/Shim area for fear of the reputation of certain. . .powerful officials. It's sort of a minor thing, not really that big of a deal, but as a weakness she'd be very, very unlikely to come into contact with any vampires after even one random encounter.

'Course, you might have chosen that on purpose so that she's not freaking out at every other corner, but if you did want a somewhat more common species for her to be afraid of, you might want to pick something else (such as those of the fey persuasion. Fey can be downright nasty buggers). Up to you.

Otherwise the app looks good.

OK, I've rewritten the weakness and Sin's history, but may have gotten myself into even more trouble with the new stuff I added. Can you take another look? Thanks!
