Player Name: Xeis
Name: Yyan Dan'Jalur
Age: 18
Gender: Male
Race: Human, with suspected Elven ancestry
Height: 6'1
Physical Description:
Yyan is tall, willowy and broad shouldered, with a tendency to slouch. His hair is a shade somewhere between dirty blond and light brown, straight, kept at about chin-length. He has a thin, narrow face with a stubborn chin, a proudly arched nose, and a soft mouth. His eyes are icy blue, often with circles underneath them from a lack of sleep.
Possessions:
• A single set of patched and travel-strained garments that includes a loose-fitting gray shirt, brown pants, a ripped gray overcoat with a hood, and heavily used leather boots in desperate need of replacement.
• A small leather pouch sewn into his coat that holds what meager currency Yyan has been able of save.
• A charm made of pewter worn around his neck on a piece of old string. The charm is worked in the likeness of a symbol or character in an unknown language. It appears to have no monetary or magical value, but Yyan prizes it above any treasure in the world, in remembrance of his adoptive mother.
Strengths:
• A keen and well-organized mind and a solid memory
• Strong physical endurance, able to take a hit and keep going
• Fine-tuned hearing and eyesight
• Logically minded, able to put emotions aside and analyze a situation rationally
Magical Abilities:
• Thought projection: Yyan is mute, and therefore has learned to communicate through projecting words or images into a person’s mind. He only utilizes this ability with people that he trusts, however, more often than not communicating through facial and hand gestures.
• Mind quicken: In intense situations when quick action is needed, Yyan can speed up his mental processes, creating a time-slowing affect that allows him to make complex decisions in the apparent blink of an eye. He can only maintain such a state for a few seconds.
• Pain suppression: A lifetime of physical hardship has taught Yyan how to block pain from clouding his thoughts. It does not make him any less vulnerable to wounds.
• Magic sensitivity: Yyan has an inherent “sixth sense” for magic, often able to detect when spells and arcane energy are in use. He can feel spells that have been placed on physical objects, or sense magical energy in others.
• Negation: If a spell has directed at him, Yyan has the ability to analyze it and unravel it, negating its effects. He is extremely limited in the range of magic he can negate, and it takes a debilitating amount of concentration, leaving him drained and vulnerable afterwards.
Weaknesses:
• Tongue was cut out around age 10, so cautious while eating or drinking
• Prone to insomnia because of heightened senses and a brain that is constantly running
• Difficulty in expressing strong emotion, with a tendency to “shut down” if emotional surges run too high
History:
Yyan has no memory of his parents, nor has he ever been able to find any clear answers about what became of them. He grew up as a slave to a wealthy and powerful lord, known to him only as “the master”. Hyalith, a serving woman in the household took a liking to him and sought to shield Yyan from the worst of the hardships. Wise, gentle and beautiful, she was his only friend, and as he grew he came to view her as his mother. For many years Yyan’s magical sense told him there was more to her than she let on, a subtle power that she kept secret, but his untrained mind could not tell him any more than that.
When Yyan was about 10 years old, the master's business dealings came under attack by rivals, leading him to believe he had a spy within his ranks. Anyone he suspected of treachery he executed. All of the children within the household, Yyan included, had their tongues cut out as both a warning to any hidden betrayers and to ensure that no one could ever extract information from such young minds.
After Yyan’s ordeal, Hyalith sheltered him through the night, relieving his pain and filling his mind with her loving presence. She began teaching him how to communicate with her through thoughts and ways to control his mind and strengthen his will. Yyan attended to the lessons and found a wellspring of untapped power within himself he never knew existed. His magical senses grew, but everything Hyalith taught him was done with caution and in absolute secrecy. Whenever he questioned her about how she had learned such abilities, the only answers he received were a smile and a promise that she would tell him when he was ready.
The lessons continued until Yyan was about 18. The master's lands came under siege by his political rivals. Hyalith woke him in the dead of night, commanding him to follow her. Through stealth and Hyalith’s astounding show of force, they managed to escape the estates while unknown men slew the other servants and members of the household, pursued all the way to the harbor. Hyalith forced Yyan aboard one of the ships bound for the other side of the world, and refused his terrified pleas that she come with him. Compelled by her power, Yyan could not disobey her, and he watched her face down their pursuers as his ship left port. She sold her life dearly, and the last thing he saw was her body falling into the sea, arrows standing from her chest.
Yyan braved the months-long voyage in the hold, stealing what food he could to survive, and at the first port of call he left the ship. Because of his upbringing, he could perform many tasks, and he scraped out a living as best he could, but the lands were unfamiliar, and people obviously mistrusted the mute young man. He moved from place to place, but eventually hit a wide stretch of uninhabited land. With no skills in hunting. Yyan grew weak and ill, and stumbled into the outskirts of Shim one night. A family took him in and attempted to nurse him, but they grew frightened when they heard an unintelligible voice whispering deliriously in their minds throughout the night. The watch was called, and Yyan was taken into custody at Marn.
He does not know how long he remained within the dungeons, visited often by strange figures whose faces he never saw, but he eventually recovered enough of his wits to realize he was once again in captivity. Then a man visited his cell one night, a well-spoken man who offered him his freedom in exchange for employing his unique talents in service to the city. With no other option save death, Yyan reluctantly agreed…
