Apart from Zaryel, these are the merceneries Quinn is presenting for Good Sir Shiny's approval. They are all aquaintances of Zaryel and 'Zanni', and members of what Quinn would call Marn's criminal middle-to-upper-underworld - not so crooked as all that, but they drink in the same kind of places as the crooked people, and it's sort of guilt by association.
'Lucky' Luki (Lucrezia) Lepowitz is so called because she's such a good lucky charm in gang conflicts that it's worth paying her on the off-chance that you need her, just so your opponents can't get hold of her. What she does is kill, generally without fuss, struggle or even a proper fight, due to her skill in stealth, disguise (she's no Quinn, but she's not bad), ranged and poisoned weapons. However, despite attempts to properly recruit her she refuses to join a gang, ostensibly because it pays better to be a free agent, but in actual fact the money doesn't outweigh the risks; the truth is that Luki sees herself as a vigilante. Better, still, a vigilante who gets paid by the very gangs she sets out to destroy, which she will either do by bankrupting them or killing them all on each others' behalf, one or the other.
Race: Human (mixed race; her mother was from a country far to the east of Thar Shaddin)
Age: 24
Height: 5'7"
Build: Wiry
Fighting style: Luki prefers to use one of her two crossbows (one pistol, one repeating, which is her mother's), but is just as comfortable fighting with knives that she keeps dirty in the hope that when she eventually goes down in battle, the person who did it will die two weeks later of septicemia.
As for the man known as 'Good Boy Doggie' no account of his past or his character would be nearly as interesting as an attempt to explain his nickname. He has been Good Boy Doggie, or Daggie, for as long as anyone can remember, and the explanation is fairly simple; his fanatical devotion to and desire to protect his much larger friend Delphindes Blunt puts some in mind of a dog's loyalty to its master, and his name is Daggie Dmitri. But, he in actual fact claims that 'Daggie' is not his name at all but a diminutive of 'Dagger', his original nickname. This raises the question of whether Dmitri is his first or his last name, and what his other name, if any, is.
Race: Human, from Thar Shaddin
Age: 30
Height: 5'7"
Build: Average size
Fighting style: Daggie carries a short sword, but is also an expert brawler who fights masterfully with his fists, feet, elbows and forehead, with the assistance of pockets lined with blackjacks and brass knuckles, steel toecaps and a straight razor in his boot.
Delphindes Blunt is an ex-soldier from a nation west of Thar Shaddin. His troop was fighting far from home when they were almost completely wiped out by magic-using enemy soldiers. Sgt. Blunt, his Captain and a few fairly new recruits were the only survivors, and they found a cave where they could hide and try to make contact with their officers. Help appeared to arrive - they were joined by a young man in their uniform who claimed to come from the General, and told them to wait where they were and everything would be fine. Having rescued the young man from a hungry-looking wolf near the cave, Blunt felt himself beginning to grow fond of the younger man - in fact, his presence gave Blunt new resolve to go on, because while earlier that week he hadn't cared if he died, he was now determined to look after his young friend and bring him home. A few days later, a squadron of magic-using soldiers arrived at the cave. They were enemies, who had somehow gotten wind of where Blunt's troop were.
They fought bravely, but were hopelessly outnumbered. When he was knocked off his feet trying to defend the kid and saw him struck by an enemy's magical projectile, Blunt stayed down - though whether he knew it was his only chance of survival or had just given up, who could tell? When he got up, though, he found the cave full of his dead friends, and a severely injured but very much alive new kid. The young man, aware that he was dying, confessed to Blunt what he had already half worked out for himself - he was a mercenery who had been paid to assist in an ambush.
The young man - originally of Thar Shaddin and known as 'Dagger' Dmitri - had passed out with every expectation of death, and was very surprised to wake up very much alive, and being looked after by a healer paid for by Blunt. As soon as he was well enough to walk, Dmitri set off after his saviour, and when he found him, told him he couldn't think of any way for him to apologise and Blunt said he couldn't either. Dmitri said he wanted to make it up to Blunt and Blunt said he didn't blame him - not because it wasn't his fault, but simply because he couldn't bring himself to blame him, or hate him, and had no reason why not, and Dmitri made him confused so why didn't he just go away and let him, Blunt, go on with what he was doing, which was trying to find a place where magic was illegal or something so he'd never have to face that kind of opponent again.
It turned out Dmitri knew a place.
And whether it's guilt, gratitude, a debt of honour, strong friendship or something else, Good Boy Doggie and his man, Blunt, have been inseperable ever since.
Race: Human, from the west of the continent
Age: 39
Height: 6'6"
Build: Heavy
Fighting style: Military style adapted for the street - which means Blunt uses his longsword less and his short sword more, and there's a whole lot more tripping and kicking involved. He has also become very good at using improvised objects as weapons or shields, once taking on an opponent out the back of the Rat with a meat cleaver for a sword and a cymbal for a shield.
