Ivone stared, wide-eyed, shocked by the vitriol spewing from Azuel's mouth. He was no push-over. He was a rabid dog! The color drained from Ivone's face and she trembled in the onslaught. Azuel mistook her trembling for fear.

Bad erotic novel?

Aurelio?

Fuck buddy?

Color began to creep into her cheeks. Ivone looked down as Azuel turned away from her. At first rage filled her, making her pulse pound in her ears, making her vision tunnel. She almost missed the last part of what he said. It was so shocking, a strange sense of calm washed over her. Ivone's right hand lifted to her chest. The other to her skirt.

"I know this is the grief talking. I forgive you." With that Ivone, turned and moved to exit the hospital. Funeral arrangements would need to be made. As Khayyam's wife, it was her duty to do so. She didn't forgive Azuel, really, and she never would.

One of the hospital employees stopped her before she could make the graceful exit she wanted.

"Yes. Yes, of course. No. You can reach me at my house, not the Vyaduka house."

The medical assistant finished her questions. The loss of a Judge in this chaos was another hit to the infrastructure of the city. The MA read through the paperwork as Ivone left. The MA's gaze stayed on the relationship field of the form for a few moments before lifting her gaze to watch Ivone, stiff-backed, navigate the ordered chaos to exit the building. She'd never understand Descendants and their marriage arrangements. As Judge Vyaduka's wife, though, Ivone had full authority to handle the funeral arrangements. The MA sighed in relief. She didn't want to be the one to argue with Azuel Vyaduka about that. She'd seen how he'd treated Ivone, even if she hadn't heard the words.

Ivone continues here, 3 months later: http://www.tharshaddin.com/rp/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=3765

Forget, I'm not sure I could.

Renée had watched the intermezzo with increasing concern. At first she just stood as petrified when she heard the news about a judge’s death, this very evening, as an indirect consequences of the bombings, if she understood it right. And she hadn’t thought there was anything she could do and say when the woman embraced Azuel, clearly seeking comfort from him in her distress. Listening to them, it had been easy to understand that the woman had been the dead judge’s wife and her name was Ivone.

This was also all Renée felt sure of having understood. There seemed to be family conflicts. She didn't even dare to guess what it could be about it, but words like "fuck buddy" and "bad erotic novel" etched themselves into her mind. It would have been a lie to say that she wasn't wondering what had been going on between judge Vyaduka's wife and somebody named Aurelio.

When Azuel Vuaduka had given the devastated woman a shove and said all those rude and furious things, Renée had come out of her surprised stupor though. He was a descendant, and Renée was below him in social rank, but this didn’t mean she would just stand there and watch if he went more violent. She had been on the brink of stepping in and try to calm things down, when the medical assistant had arrived and the woman who had obviously been close to the dead judge turned away from Azuel to speak with the MA, saying she could be found at her own house, not the Vuaduka house.

The brief but explosive confrontation was over as suddenly as it had started. Renée tried to think. Where had they been the moment before the woman had rushed in? Oh yes, she had told him his sister had been sent to the emergency unit ... Renée had been unsure of if she was empowered to say anything more. Now she took the opportunity to hand the file of Latifa to the MA. “Mr Vuaduka here was asking about his sister. Latifa Vuaduka. I’m only a volunteer, but maybe you can answer if he has more questions?” The MA started to browse the file ... Renée guessed she would answer if Azuel wanted to ask for details. She left this up to him and the MA.

Meanwhile, she turned to Azuel. She wasn’t sure what to do with him, if anything. Should she just leave? Was it her business to care about what happened from now on? Would he just find her meddlesome if she proposed something? It was tempting to just walk away. That was the easy thing to do now. There was so many wounded, so much work to do, so many people who needed her far more than Azuel Vuaduka did. There was people everywhere, and no place for a descendant to just sit and wait undisturbed, and the thought of bringing him with her back to the patients was ...

...bring him with her to take care of people? It struck her that this thought was actually not so bad. Why not. Another pair of hands could be needed. There was really much work to do and so many people who needed help, and too few who could do the job. But here was Azuel Vuaduka now, fully able to take part in the work the same way Renée did. And it would keep the man occupied. She had a feeling this would be better for him than being alone right now. So why not try to make use of him.

“Mister Vuaduka” she said, without mentioning the argument she had witnessed. “Pardon me for asking you this, when your own family is so badly affected. My condolences ... But despite this, I feel obliged to tell you that you are needed here, in the hospital, this evening.” She drew her breath, feeling a bit giddy with her own boldness. “I propose that you join me in the volunteer work here, while you wait for news about your sister and ... other things. It would be valuable for all the wounded people who need help and support. And if you are here, it will be the fastest way for you to get information about the progress for your sister.”

This was perfectly true in all ways, she thought, trying to feel at ease. There was much to do. There was many people in need of care and comfort. And the news about Latifa would reach him at once if he was still in the hospital when the surgery was done. In addition, there were things Renée hadn't said anything about; it would prevent him from rushing after Ivone and continue the hostilities, with unknown consequences. It would be better to keep him in the hospital for many reasons.

But if a man like him would care for people or for the greater good of Marn she couldn’t say. Perhaps the man was too upset and devastated to be able to even think of others.

“I mean” she said, somewhat awkward now, but persistent. “I’m sorry. It’s not my place to ask this of you. I don’t know what I was thinking. I guess I’m just getting a little tired. I ... just thought ... It’s the best for Marn. “

Azuel turned and stared at her as she addressed him. He remained dead silent and kept his eyes narrow, his overall posture slightly hunched. He could hear Ivone leaving, which distracted him from parts of Renee’s words.

Without full comprehension of what she had said, when she finished he was left glaring at her. He didn’t understand what she was asking so he opted for silence as he pieced together her words. His expression had remained immutably locked in consternation, which Renee had seemed to take for refusal. She stuttered under his glower, meekly implying her place in Marn’s pecking order.

By the time he figured out the meaning behind the fragments which had reached his ears, the silence had stretched on to uncomfortable levels. Once again, Azuel let it sit. This time the awkward silence between them felt very intentional, becoming all the more uncomfortable for it. There was a malice lingering from his encounter which still hung over Azuel. Renee was to be the recipient as the medical assistant watched. She likely had somewhere to be and was plainly nervous, but was unable to turn her eyes away from the spectacle.

He considered her proposal under a seething exterior. Whether he liked it or not, he was a guard. He expected there would be more for him to do in the coming week than there had been all of last month. Devoting more time to the hospital was deeply unappealing.

“You avoided letting me see the file.” Azuel bluntly pointed out, breaking the pall. He was observant even in his current state of despair, and had fully judged Renee’s actions as intentional. “Do you think my sister is going to die?” He asked Renee. The medical assistant started shuffling through papers with the intent to pull out Latifa’s file, but Azuel held up a hand. There was an authority that his heritage granted him which made her decide to stop, albeit only grudgingly. Her head turned slightly and her eyes narrowed. Azuel calmly reasoned that his present instability was likely also a factor in her decision. She did not care to set off another bout of shouting.

“I asked her.” His voice was even, but sounded drained. It was as if asking the question was sapping what energy he had left. He didn’t really understand why he was asking Renee, but it felt important. “I’ll ask you in a moment.”

Being a shop owner with more than twenty years of working with sales or various curiosities, Renée wasn’t new to dealing with demanding and displeased people. As a persistent eccentric with her own personal and deviant style, she wasn’t particularly new to awkward silences either. If she had been bothered by things like that and easily deterred, she would long ago have bought more mainstream clothes and looked for employment instead of driving her own business.

But the silence the Vyaduka gave her right now felt more than awkward; paired with his posture and his expression it had the hallmark of deliberate nastiness. Though why it would be so was beyond her to even guess at. It was however obvious that he still seemed as upset, high-strung and unstable as he had been during the brief meeting with the widow, Ivone.

His rude and violent behavior towards Ivone was fresh in her mind. And now he was rude to both herself and the medical assistant. It could maybe be chalked up to him being about to break under the onslaught of personal disasters as well as the disaster they were all living through. But regardless of his reasons, it wasn’t like Renée wanted to be nice to Azuel right now. Certainly not!

Her initial reaction to his behavior was that it riled her up, and she wanted to give back and be equally rude. Her chin came up a little bit and this accentuated her somewhat angular and fierce facial features. She straightened up, pushed a thin strand of hair away from her cheek and in behind her ear, shook out the skirt of her red dress and and ran her hands over the volunteer apron to adjust it to proper perfection.

But she had to be nice to him, of course she must. It came automatically to her to rein herself in and say the opposite of what she felt. Without thinking about it, just doing it, she started to smile in a very warm, pleasant and service minded way, like she appreciated him very much. “Oh, I feel so sorry for you, mister Vuaduka” she said in a sincere, pleasant and compassionate tone; a bit overly caring even.

She didn’t answer Azuel’s question though. Instead she promptly turned to the medical assistant and still in in the same utterly obliging tone she asked if she could have the file about Latifa Vyaduka, so she could let Azuel see the information about his sister.

The medical assistant looked uneasy. “No” she said. “Certainly not. It’s against the hospital’s rules to let visitors read the files about our patients. What’s written about people in the files is secret.”

Well, now Renée felt relieved that she hadn’t shown Azuel the file! It was really fortunate that he hadn’t started to demand more information until now, when she didn’t have the secret information at her fingertips anymore.Still as obliging as ever, Renée spoke to Azuel again, in same warm, understanding and reassuring tone: “Your sister has been taken good care of and sent to the emergency unit. This is all you are allowed to know right now. You can sadly not get more information yet, so you will have to wait. I can well understand that you are too shocked and weak to be able to think of helping other people right now. Shall I help you find a calm place where you can rest ?” Her hands went to the bandage around her head, checking that is was still in place.

She felt it was her duty as volunteer to offer this, and he was also a Vuaduka so she couldn’t just leave him abruptly. But it would be a lie to say that she didn’t briefly discern a shameful spark of vengeful satisfaction gleaming in a dark and unknown place deep inside her, when she denied him the information. She suppressed it nearly instantaneously and banned it from her awareness, as something evil she could impossibly have felt for the poor man who seemed about to break under high mental and emotional pressure.

Smiling benevolently at Azuel, she adjusted the shoulder straps of the apron in order to make their positions be one fraction of a millimeter more symmetrical.

When she stood tall and proud, Azuel felt a lance of fear work through his body. The frail illusion of strength his anger had given him shattered when she did not respond with fear or hatred. His hands lost their fists and he took a single step backwards. He resembled nothing so much as a startled deer.

The medical assistant didn’t help matters when she retook authority over the situation by voicing official policy on the files. Azuel was nothing if not respectful of established order.

“I- no, don’t worry. I’d rather do something than nothing.” He was lying. Pride demanded he act competent to regain his shattered image. He turned to the medical assistant. “I am a guard, so I can’t promise any significant time here, but… what is the process for signing up?”

Post-Bombings - 3 days

When Ree awoke, shuttered lamps left dim circles of light by which nurses and the on-call Physican could check on their patients. The hospital was mostly quiet. She could hear voices, kept low, and footsteps.

A hunched figure, propped up by grimy, white armor sat in a chair beside her. Cam's face was etched with weariness and at least three-day's stubble. His eyes were closed. Ree had seen him sleep like that before, if one could call it that.

"Cam." Ree's voice was soft, hoarse. It cracked. She was thirsty, so thirsty.

Cam's eyes popped open and for a moment, his gaze was distant. Soon, though, the gaze focused. Cam leaned forward.

"Ree?" She was awake. A sense of relief washed over him, which he squashed. If he let it hit now, he'd be even more exhausted. "I'll get the doctor." Cam started to move off, then paused.

"I'm glad you're awake." Saying that much was a lot for him. His typical stoic demeanor did not allow for more. Perhaps some other time, when they weren't in such a public setting.

When the nurse practioner returned, Cam stayed in the background until she left. Ree gratefully drank the small bit of water she was allowed, too much would result in cramping.

"How is it?" Ree asked softly, concern already forming in her eyes and face.

Cam just shook his head. "Not now." For a brief moment, he reached out and held her hand. "Rest."

Ree wanted to protest. She knew there had to be so much to do, but she was already feeling tired again.

"You, too."

"I will." And he would. Later.

It was the third evening after the gala bombings. Renee was soon going to leave and go home to sleep. The red dress from the gala evening was replaced with a soft grey tunic skirt under the apron. Her dark hair was pinned up to keep it out of the way for the sake of good hygiene, and the bandage around her head was smaller now. She concealed it with a pale blue scarf.
It was the last late walk around to check if there was something simple a volunteer could do for the patients. Opening the door as silently as she could in order to not disturb, she peered into the room.

She recognized the woman in the bed. Metarie Sethaka. Renee knew nothing more about her than the name, the looks, the fact that she was an elf, wounded, and had openly used lots of magic healing in public on the gala evening.

Normally they would perhaps never have met.

Normally there was a lot of people Renee would never have met. Not Metarie, not Azuel Vyaduka, not that woman he had argued with so violently, the widow of judge Vyaduka. She was a titre and a shopkeeper, a loyal citizen of Marn and now also a volunteer at the hospital for as long as she was needed. But the upper classes weren’t her circles.

And after what she had seen these last days, she felt it could be best so.

That was neither here nor there though. She was here to check on the situation. In case there was something she could do she would do it. She stepped in and closed the door behind her, but lingered right inside it. She listened to the low sound of Metarie breathing in the silence. Rest and sleep was important for the recovery. Renee had been instructed to never make somebody wake up for no reason.
So she would just stand there for a little while. If the patient seemed to sleep, Renee would leave again as silently as she had arrived, but if she noticed any signs of discomfort, or was spoken to, she would walk over to the bed.
