Talia's heart was sinking lower as she started coming to the end of her inventory checklist. She had been hoping that something would be at least close enough to empty for her to use it as an excuse to leave the baker. But Bepa and Vadim did a good job at making sure she didn't have to make extra trips outside of their regular delivery days.

She sighed inwardly as she slipped the book and pen back in the drawer. As it close she froze, her hand still on the handle. The haunting voice was back in her head and she didn't like what it was saying. Or even calling her that for that matter. She didn't have powers, this had to be an elaborate lie cooked up to control her or something. But she would still be careful...even being accused of something like that could mean bad things, if only for the business.

She nodded her head as she turned around. "Here, let me take you then I can show you around." She started towards the stairs when an idea hit her. Looking at the clock she groaned.

"Great, now I am late. I can't believe I've lost track of time like this!" She threw her hands up in the air in mock exasperation. "Hurry up and follow me. I have a date to get ready for and Dray'll kill me if I am too late for it."

She ran up the stairs trying to imagine what Dray would actually do if she showed up late for date. She almost snickered at the idea of Dray asking her, or any woman for that matter, on a date. Turning left she leapt up a couple more steps and opened a door. Her bed lay neatly made against the wall across the room. To her left were a couple of windows with a small balcony the hung over the alley and behind the bakery. On her right, a small stand with mirror over it stood next to a closed door. Scattered around the room were at least half a dozen thriving potted plants and flowers.

She grabbed the first dress she say which happened to be the one she had worn to the banquet not too long ago. Going into the room she slipped out of her floury dress and into the new one. It seemed like no matter what she did or wore it always seemed to end up a mess by the end of the day. Exiting the bathroom she started to unbraid her hair and then tie it back with a ribbon while she talked.

"The bathroom is the room I just came out of, make sure the boy uses it before he goes to sleep. I would rather not have to clean the sheets again as well as the mattress." She inspected her look in the mirror, trying to decide if lip rouge would add to the effect and her story or take away from it. Shrugging her shoulders she put a bit on, it wasn't like she was going to have many, if any, other occasions to wear it otherwise.

"Okay. Turn out the lights, keep the door locked and if you get hungry. Eat the bread that I cut into earlier. If you eat the cookies I swear...." She paused, she was going to make some sort of threat but how you threaten a sword? Say you will melt it down? She shook her head. "Well lets just say there will be hell to pay if they get eaten without being paid for first. Now. How to I look?" She spun in a circle her arms out before stopping.

The basilard halted at her exasperation. When she explained, the basilard grew uneasy. This was not acceptable. Now it could not assume the act of leaving the house equivalent to an act of treachery. It was put in a position which merited reevaluation.

It continued to consider the implications of her statement as it followed her up the stairs. It would be threatened if she trusted her neighbors enough to contact them, but otherwise it had plenty of time to prepare itself. At the worst, it supposed it would have to prepare quick escape route, ideally which would allow it to take the offered bread with it. She already knew enough about it that she could tell anyone of importance enough to ruin what secrecy remained to it. The basilard concluded that the honesty it had granted her had likely been a mistake. There was also the possibility that she was telling the truth in turn. If so, if she was willing to maintain silence, the basilard could yet retain hope that she could be turned into an ally. And yet... the tranquility with which she had endured its revelation remained suspicious. It may yet be wisest to seize the food and flee at the first opportunity.

As she led the weapon to her bedroom, it continued to be torn by indecision. It was so focused on its thoughts in this manner, it at first failed to take note of its primal senses. When it did, the basilard was startled by the curious flow of magic about the room. The boy’s eyes widened in what marked the basilard’s first unconscious use of expression. Magic was flowing out of the baker into the plants.

While Talia changed, her plants ceased receiving the magic and reverted to ordinary, if exceptionally healthy, plants. The basilard had learned of the growth of vegetation and what it required over the course of its existence, and noted that many were far removed from the sunlight. This implied that she was providing them with magical energy directly, in place of the energy plants received from the sun.

It walked over to the plants and stared, the boy being short enough that the leafy boughs were at about eye level. Its free hand rested on the desk beside it, and its unflinching examination betrayed its deep interest.

The weapon’s thoughts immediately took a different path. The potential for reward through alliance was suddenly much greater. If she was capable of granting her plants energy, then it was extremely likely that she would be able to grant it energy as well. The basilard could not know for certain what would happen to it in such an occurrence, but it could assume much. An expanded radius in which it could sense magic would be exceptionally useful in locating its kin, perhaps even the deciding factor. It had often wondered what should occur if one of the blades had been buried. This little mage could enable it to locate one so lost or hidden.

This was nothing compared to the potential in its other abilities. It could already sense deviations in the seal. If it empowered the baker using that ability and the baker in turn empowered it, the basilard suspected it might be able to go so far as to raise the dead as ravens. Surely the resurrected would be grateful, perhaps even grateful enough to discreetly scout Marn. This baker could be the key to finally finding its kin, after two thousand years.

It was willing to stay. The risk was worth the reward, especially with the collapse of the Seal on a countdown of a mere century. Times were dire indeed, particularly if both of its lost kin were not already together.

The baker exited the bathroom, and told it to use the toiletries. It made an intentional effort to mimic the human motion of nodding, before consciously turning up the coroners of its lips. As no other feature on its face made the proper motions for smiling, the effect was uncanny. Very well, mage. It allowed its telepathic voice to sound highly satisfied.

When she asked it how she looked, the basilard hesitated for a moment. You are in error asking me such a thing. When I was forged, mortals considered body art and piercings the highest form of beauty. With the advent of each century, standards of beauty have altered so dramatically as to be completely unrecognizable, and I have long since ceased keeping track of something so irrelevant to my purpose. Furthermore, I am inorganic, inhuman, and incapable of judging the appearance of a mortal on even a wholly primitive level. The boy blinked once. I am not able to answer your inquiry. My apologies.

She meet child's gaze with a blank stare. What had she been thinking, asking a sword for advice on her looks. And from all that she had seen in such a short time it wasn't as if the boy could say anything so he was no help either. No matter, she thought as she droped her hands to her side before grabbing her cloak off the door and fastened it about her shoulders. She apparently had succeeded in her act and was going to leave the bakery with no fuss or fight.

"No worries, I suppose I should have expected that afterall." She said as she took a final look in the mirror. "I shouldn't be gone too long. I am sorry for having to leave you so suddenly like this but I promised I would meet up with him tonight and I am a woman of my word." She felt a little guilty about lying but sometimes certain events called for such things.

With a final nod as a goodbye she closed the door to her room and hoped down the stairs before he, or it, had a chance to say anything else or stop her. Leaving through the back door she made sure to lock it behind her. She smiled in relief as she walked out and down the main street. She had been really worried she was going to be trapped there with that thing and she really had no idea how to handle this all on her own.

Her thoughts went back to what had passed as she forced her self to mantain an even pace. Her mind finally starting to process more about what the basilard had been talking about. Something about the Seal and something escaping and killing thngs, or had it already escaped? She sighed slightly regretting her one track mind of the moment. Oh well, hopefully Drayel could help her figuring things out and perhaps save the boy from that sword that was possessing him.

* * * * *

It didn't take Talia too much longer to reach Drayel Morig's farmhouse. After she had felt she was an appropriate distance away from the bakery she had run the rest of the way there. Knocking breathless at his door she rocked on the the balls of her feet nerveously as she waited for someone to answer the door.

The basilard thought carefully. The first order of business was securing an escape route in a manner which would not anger his benefactor if she proved herself trustworthy. That would require planning. It looked throughout the room to that end, deciding that the balcony was the obvious choice. If it could acquire some rapid, safe means of decent to the street below it would make an effective exit. It wandered over to gaze into the alleys behind the house.

Yes, it could lose a person in the alleys, provided they did not enter the room before he attempted to escape. If such a fate became reality, it expected no success could be acquired. It was best to avoid such an occurrence entirely.

It searched through various drawers and cupboards, roving throughout the house for cheap, expendable supplies. Opening one desk beneath several of the supernaturally healthy potted plants, it discovered a large bundle of string.

It held no illusions that such a thing would support the child’s weight, but the basilard could think of other uses for such a thing. If it was going to get a full night of rest here, it wished to ensure that the slumbering mortal host body would not toss the basilard away in its sleep. It extracted the string from the drawer and then reached for scissors, presumably kept nearby for the purpose of cutting the string.

Using its left hand to pull a length of string from the spool, it then released the strong and lifted the scissors. It cut the length of rope before placing both the scissors and the remaining string approximately where it had left them. It then lifted its cut length of string and cautiously lopped it around the hilt, pommel, and the boy’s hand. It could not tie complex knots, especially not with one hand, but it managed to fasten the weapon firmly enough. No tossing or turning was about to set the boy free.

It proceeded with its adventure by searching for other objects. The baker had specified that she did not wish to clean anything, and the basilard felt that it could comply with such a wish. Opening some drawers by her bed, it pulled out a spare blanket. It managed to sling the neatly folded sheet under its arm, whereupon it walked out into the night air of the balcony and dropped the folded load onto the floor.

Perhaps she would believe it required cleaning. It did not know. Standards of cleanliness were also frequently in flux in mortal society. Regardless, the basilard reached for one of the sheet’s corners and tied it to the railing. It did not need to reach all the way to the ground; it only needed to prevent the basilard from falling harmfully. To avoid angering its benefactor, it did not throw the blanket over the railing just yet. Even weak as it was, such a task could be easily accomplished later, during a moment of threat, and would only arouse suspicion now.

Perhaps these precautions would not be needed at all, but the basilard had not survived for as long as it had by taking chances. It could only hope that its kin had learned the same lesson, or else it might never find them.

The weapon moved to the bed and crawled across the sheets, before finally laying down. The mattress was soft and it was not long before the boy slept soundly, watched over by the gleaming blade. It felt the human parts of its mind shut down into nothingness, barring the boy’s dreams. They were nightmares of a raven devouring him, as they always were.

The basilard’s light pulsed gently, washing over and receding from the room like a peaceful wave upon a long, sandy beach.

When Drayel opened the door to such sharp knocking, he wasn't sure how to take the sight before him. He blinked, startled and confused as he immediately ushered the breathless woman into the house with a frown on his face. What had happened? What was wrong? Immediately he voiced his concerns.

"Are you alright? What happened?" Drayel demanded as he took her firmly by the arms and gave her a thorough examination. "You don't seem injured... Were you robbed again?"

He wasn't sure why he was so flustered. No, he knew why. Talia was one of the few he'd actually call a close friend. To think of her in danger both brought him in a near panic and a protective rage. No, calm down. He forced his ears to open and his hands to let go. Taking a deep breath he stepped back and brought himself into focus.

"Sorry." He grumbled looking a bit pink. "Uh, what do you need? You... aren't harmed are you?"

Talia raised an eyebrow questioningly as she looked from Drayel down to her outfit. Did she really look that bad? Perhaps something had gone awry during her run over here? What was she thinking! This was not the time to question her appearances so long as she wasn't indecent which as far as she could tell, she was not.

"It's okay...I know this is sudden and I apologize for coming this late but I need help. I am alright!" She apologized before blurting out the answer to his question not wanting him to worry about her more then he had too. There was going to be enough to worry about once she was finished.

"No, I am fine." Talia assured him again before continuing, wringing her hands nervously as she talked, her eyes looking up at him trying to mask the panic she was starting to feel in her gut. She opened her mouth to explain the situation but snapped it shut just as quick. She looked around around the room for signs of Shade or Jackal. She didn't see them but that didn't mean that they weren't within earshot and she really didn't want to to bring them into it, both for their safety and in the off-chance the basilard was telling the truth about her...talents. It would be bad enough if she had to tell Drayel about it.

"Can we talk elsewhere? Outside perhaps?" She pleaded, biting her lower lip nervously as she tried to keep herself from fidgeting. "I have to tell you something...important and I would rather no one else knows about it."

The basilard continued to watch the boy sleep, examining the nightmares with impassive eyes. It wondered why mortals were forced to recharge so frequently. It was a highly inconvenient need of their biology.

It was a price the basilard was willing to pay for freedom of movement. Even the most active of mortals would never be able to wholly devote their life to seeking its kin. Only it could achieve such an end. Only it could put the host body to proper use. Having searched for so long, it knew there was no other way.

The sleeping form tossed a bit, perhaps in response to a particularly gruesome bit of gore as the nightmares continued. They would go throughout the night, though the boy might not remember them when he awoke. After all, having hijacked the child’s senses it was now the one experiencing the nightmares. The basilard hadn’t the faintest idea if the boy was as well. Nor did it particularly care.

It waited with a patience forged in many years. If these moments of inactivity were necessary, it would deal with them. It could search for its kin, and would do whatever was needed to find them, just as it always had.

"Oh. Er, sure." Drayel paused to glance around himself for a moment before his eyes settled back on her face. His face blushed a heavy red now that his awkward panic finally died down. She wanted to speak in private? He frowned. "Perhaps the pond. Nobody can eavesdrop there."

With that he strode past her towards the back door, snagging a couple apples off the table as he passed. Holding them in one large hand, he opened the creaking door and politely allowed her to pass before leading her to open field in the back. As he walked he immediately tried to discover her sudden visit. She clearly wasn't here just to say hello, she wouldn't have looked rather... well like she ran. He pursed his lips.

"What is it you need?" Drayel asked offering her one of the red fruits. He gave her a rather timid but pleased smile. "Surely you weren't so happy to see me."

Talia allowed herself to smile as the reached the pond and a cool breeze danced a cross the water and through her hair. Reaching a hand up she tucked a stray tendril behind her ear. Her breathing had evened out although her heart still felt like it was going a mile a minute.

"Can we sit down?" She asked, her legs suddenly tired especially knowing that this could take a while to explain and that she still needed to walk back to the bakery before her night was over. Unclipping her cloak she slipped it off and placed in down on the damp grass before settling down on it, patting the space beside her as she tucked her legs under her.

She accepted the proffered apple and took a bite, a bit of juice dripping onto her chin. Using her thumb she wiped it away as she chewed and then swallowed. She debated taking another bite before letting her hands and the apple rest in her lap. Drayel deserved to know why she had barged in on his quiet evening but she didn't know how to tell him all that had transpired in the past few hours.

"If anyone asks later tonight, we were on a date okay? Please?" Her cheeks flushed again at her request and she quickly started blurting out her story before giving him a chance to respond.

"I just don't know who to turn to. I can't go to the guard's because of...well sensitive information. And I know you are a guard too but you are a friend and I was hoping that you would at least be able to give me advice. This all could be just some kind of trick by some kids but of course there was that voice...it can't all be a joke but maybe everything they say isn't true. I don't even understand everything it told me but I am worried about the boy. I think he is possessed."

With the final statement she took a breathe knowing that she had made a mess of her explanation. Perhaps he would be able to pull something from it though. If he asked questions maybe she would be able to answer them and start explaining this whole situation properly.

Drayel had barely sat down when the absurdities poured from her mouth. He tried to keep up, listen to her ramble on about something. A possession? Boy? He tried to keep up. Feeling rather lost he found himself hushing her gently, giving her arm a firm squeeze in an attempt to slow down the blur that rushed from her mouth.

"A boy is possessed?" He asked with a large frown, eyebrows furrowed as he gave her a rather confused. Guard instinct was to go, grab the boy, and call the nearest priest yet.... he eyed Talia. "What do you mean? Why would you think he's possessed? Did he harm you in anyway? Seem... odd?"

He was no preacher, in fact he was hardly a man of faith. Yet if she was desperate enough to run to him then he'd do what he could for her. Guard or not, Talia needed his help. He growled in determination as he bowed his head to hold her eyes level with his own, even in the sitting position.

"You're going to have to explain what happened. Though slower this time, alright?" Drayel gave her a twitch of a smile. "I may be a guard but I'm no miracle worker. I can't understand you when you speak in a rush. Also, if you'd like to pretend us on a date then I see no reason not to, though you'll have to deal with a rather rough creature instead a charmer. Sorry."

"I'm sorry." She whispered, her free hand going to her forehead as if to check her temperature. His voice soothing her as he spoke, his grasp on her arm bring her back down to earth and comforting her in it's own strange little way.

"And charmers...they don't, I don't...you'll do." She sputtered before taking a deep breath and another bit of apple before starting her explanation, this time slower.

"Tonight as I was finishing up in the kitchen I heard a voice...in my head." She looked at him nervously, trying to gauge his reaction. "Eventually it managed to convince me to let him in and I saw a young boy standing there so I let him in and fed him. That is what he wanted and he looked like he needed it. What I didn't realize until a bit later was that he was holding a sword...a bisard? Baldard? I don't remember what he called it exactly but it had a raven on its handle. And from what I can understand the sword is somehow alive and uses people as hosts somehow and can speak in your mind. It said something about having a mission that if it didn't succeed bad things were going to happen and I think it basically said it didn't care about the child."

"And that's what I am worried about." She said placing a hand on his arm, her concern evident in her eyes. "The child was exhausted and starving and so possessive of that sword. He had no expressions on his face, almost as if he wasn't there anymore." She shivered at the memory of the boy's emotionless face.

"He, or it, is asleep in my bed right now. The only way I could leave without it thinking I was going to tell everyone about it was by making up a story about having a date and getting all dressed up for it. I don't want to be blamed, fired or put in jail because I let this all take place in the bakery and my house...but it also threatened...it said it was going too. It said it was going to spread a nasty lie about me if I told anyone that he was here. But I couldn't do this alone, I just couldn't. I just don't know what to do." She all but whimpered.

She didn't have the strength to tell Drayel what the basilard had accused her of. She trusted him but she wasn't sure how he would feel if she told him what it had told her. She let go of Drayel's arm and stared at her hand in her lap, the apple long forgotten as she blinked rapidly a few time to hold back the wave of tear that threatened to spill over.

Drayel's eyes softened as he firmly wrapped an arm around the teary eyed maiden on instinct. He held her in a friendly comfort whilst trying to think through this new information. A child was possessed. By what, he didn't know but if that was true then... his lips tightened as he turned and looked down at the woman with a soft shushing. "Easy. I'm not going to send you to jail. It's alright."

"Did it tell you it's name? Or at least, what it was?"Drayel asked as he too began to take a bite of apple. "What about it's voice?"

He tried to sound gentle though he feared he was beginning to sound gruff. She was upset. He could see how spooked she was by the whole ordeal yet besides this awkward one armed hug, he wasn't really sure what to do. Still, he at least tried. Though with the boy, he was really at a loss. He ground his teeth.

"Damn heathens." he cursed under his breath.

The arm around her was a bit of a surprise but she didn't pull away. Leaning into the semi-awkward embrace she rested her head on his shoulder she closed her eyes and tried to focus on slowing down her heart that was still beating quite fast.

"Don't make any promises." She mumbled, her voice barely audible. "You don't know what it accused me of."

Lifting her head up she leaned forward as she brought knees up to her chin, embracing her legs as she let Drayel's arm slide off her shoulders. Her head rested sideways on her knees and she gazed up at him. When she spoke her voice had steadied.

"It called it's self a Raven Basilard, I think." She started, her memory about the whole ordeal coming back to her as she calmed down. "The sword part of it could glow, almost a pulsing bluish light. And It had a raven's head on the hilt, rather eerie if you ask me. As for the voice....I don't know how to explain it. It never spoke out loud, neither through the sword or the boy. Only in my head. I don't think it can read thoughts though, otherwise it would have known I wasn't telling the true about why I was leaving." She picked at one of the roses embroidered on her sleeve, her gaze somewhat glazed over as she did her best to recall any little detail that could help her or Drayel.

"I am sure if we could get the sword away from the boy he would be okay. But I don't know if the sword gives any sort of power to it's host body and I am certainly not equipped to try and disarm anyone, boy or otherwise." Her hands reached up to hold her head, the stress starting to come back. "I just don't know...and I think....I'm scared." Her voice melted to a whisper again as she allowed herself become vulnerable.

"...Come on then." Drayel said with a gentle nudge before snorting rather sharply. "If it's the sword we need to make the boy drop than perhaps we can free him yet. If not, we can at least tie him down and get a priest for assistance. As for whatever it accused you of, I don't believe it. A heathen that possesses an innocent boy is bound to lie too."

As he spoke his eyes began to narrow, his brain working to make a plan that involved the least amount of people possible. He'd have to bring his sword if that Bal-thing tried to attack yet to actually bring it in the room would send the monster probably into attack mode. He'd have to leave it downstairs somewhere and send Talia down to get it if need be. It was heavy, but he'd seen her in action. She'd be able lift it if not drag it to him. Still, how was he suppose to defeat a spirit and not kill a boy? He grumbled.

"Are you alright to go back with me?" Drayel asked glancing over at the baker. "As I said, I am no miracle worker but... I will do my best."

"You'll come back with me?" Talia asked almost surprised but relieved at the idea of not having to go back alone. She turned to face him and grabbed his hands in thanks. "I can't tell you how much that means to me! Although you have to make sure it doesn't know you are a guard. At least not until afterwards otherwise who knows how much more complicated it will get." Her voice became serious and she let go of Drayel's hands and she gazed into the sky contemplatively before standing up and stretching.

"And I suppose it will seem normal for a guy to walk a girl home after a date so that shouldn't be too much of a problem. Although it doesn't seem to understand too much of the current culture so maybe...." She shrugged, she was over thinking this and it was just making her tense again. She forced a smile as she grabbed her cloak off the ground and shook it out before putting it back on. "Just to warn you...it may start speaking to you in your head as you approach, you'll have to make sure it doesn't feel threatened by you and well I suppose you know what to do, being a guard I guess you have training in that kind of thing."

Talia's thoughts trailed to how she was going to manage getting Drayel up her stairs to her room where the boy most likely would be. She turned towards him, her mouth opening to pose the question to him before a sudden thought came across her face and her cheeks flushed again. Snapping her mouth shut she spun around and started to walk back the way they came tossing her next comment over her shoulder. "I suppose we should start heading back. Do you need to do anything before we go?"

Locked
