I'm not really worried that he'd 'gut' the military-even though democrats have already begun calling for a 25% reduction of our defense budget. There are a whole fuckton of reasons why that's retarded, even though our defense budget is pretty big at the moment (Military still isn't paid as much as civilian sector for comparable education and training, needs money to replace destroyed equipment, needs to replace some of our older weapons systems, personally I feel needs an overhaul of the training system). I really can't describe to you how bad cutting the defense budget would be, especially when there's SO MUCH MORE federal money that we spend uselessly. I doubt it would happen, though, because:
A. It would be political suicide
B. Obama's called for increasing the size of the army and the marines and for giving increased breaks between deployments, which means, mathematically, he's actually going to have to increase the size of the army and the marines more than even he's suggested.
MY fear is that Obama has the idea that 'The military is a hammer.' I believe the metaphor is that international terrorism is complex, and the military is only one tool-a hammer-and that when all you have is a hammer, everything starts to look like a nail. When people say this I want to shake them until they get whiplash. Like holy living fuck. The military is not 'a hammer.' If it was a hammer-the implication being that the military can destroy other militaries and not do anything else-we could have a fucking armada of killer robot drones instead of a military. That would be super badass. I just find it maddening when I hear this because of, well, what my job is.
I know a lot of people who are excited that he'll increase the size, scope, funding and training of special operations-which needs to happen, badly. America is very lacking when it comes to unconventional warfare and information warfare-not because of lack of training or expertise, but because our numbers are so small and there are so many bureaucratic barriers to what we're allowed to do.
I really, REALLY hope he does. But he hasn't really given the specifics of his plan for the military, so I have to reserve judgment.
