The wine was quite pleasant and already a little refreshed from the water. Nasku inclined his head appreciatively as he put down the glass.

“I could get used to this, for sure.” He almost felt like an idiot, constantly smiling, but he was enjoying himself. He was in good company, had good wine, was about to eat good food. On top of it, they wouldn’t be interrupted out here in the middle of the lake and the weather was fine. What more could one possibly want?

Accepting the plate Metarie offered him, he proceeded to put a little bit of everything onto it. He wasn’t all too fussy when it came to food and he was generally interested in trying things at least once. After brief consideration and realisation that really everything was on there, he held the plate out to Metarie.

“You said spoiling goes both ways. You’re spoiling me with good food, so I will at least serve it.”

It had sounded good in his head. All of a sudden however, he wasn’t so sure anymore. Why oh why did she manage to make him feel like a little schoolboy without an inkling of how to behave properly when faced with an attractive woman?

Ree watched him fuss and fidget over the food. She rewarded Nasku with a smile as she took the plate.

"Thank you."

Lifting half of the sandwich, Ree took a bite. She looked at Nasku in curiosity as she chewed. His hair was white, his eyes pale green, and his ears slightly pointed, but both his parents were human. How did that happen? Recessive genetics? Not that it mattered, really, just that she was curious from a medical perspective. After a few bites, she reached for her glass and took a sip. He'd put more on her plate than she'd usually eat in one sitting.

"I may have to put some of this back. You gave me quite a bit." She teased, but wasn't bothered. "Do you like it?" She asked in genuine concern, worried that she'd made something that tasted horrible. Perhaps it was a bit much to bring something home-made? Maybe she should have just brought bread, cheese, and olives?

Ree smiled to herself, at herself, and looked away. Before she knew it, her glass was half-empty. When had that happened? Why suddenly had she run out of things to say?

“Oh yes, yes, I do! Very much so!” Nasku hurried to assure her. He offered her another smile when she suddenly seemed to turn shy. “And I mean it. I really do like the food. Especially the salad sauce is exquisite.”
In fact, the salad had been the first thing he’d tasted after she had mentioned the dressing she had used for it.

“Would you care for some more wine?” he asked, eyeing her quickly emptying glass. Not that his was much fuller than hers. It seemed as though he wasn’t the only one who was a little nervous. He didn’t wait for her reply but simply topped off their glasses again.

“Don’t worry about putting some of the food back though. I might have overdone it a little.” Nasku grinned sheepishly before hiding it behind a bite of the cucumber sandwich. “But there’s no rush either and if we don’t eat everything now, we’ll have a little snack for later.”

If there was going to be a later, but he sincerely hoped so.

Looking at her, he couldn’t help but wonder what was going through that pretty head of hers but he wasn’t really sure how to go about asking her either. Why was this so hard? He rarely had this much trouble making conversation with a woman. Then again, idle chatter was always easy, but where Metarie was concerned, he didn’t want it to be just random nonsense.

He really should just get over himself, shouldn’t he? Yes. Yes, he should.

“Alright, so, if you could get time off of your job for a few days and had the possibility to do anything you wanted, what would you do?”

"Hm..."

Ree sipped from her glass to keep it from spilling. The warmth of the alcohol had started to creep through her, making her feel mellow and languid. Ree closed her eyes and turned her face to the sun, leaning back on her elbows and letting the glass dangle between a few fingers.

"I have only left Marn to go to Shim. And, even when I have days off, I volunteer my time and skills because so many are in need that cannot or will not come to the Hospital."

She opened her eyes and leaned forward to look at Nasku. "I have read in books about other places, though. I..." Her gaze was bright and intent, she smiled as if enchanted with the idea. "I would like see the ocean. I would like to walk white sand beaches. I would like to see Darleone, but those things are all more than three days' time from Marn."

“Darleone? Hmmm, the land of the elves. It must be quite pretty,” Nasku mused as he switched his plate for the wine glass for the time being and leaned on his knees, playing with the stem of the glass. “Of course, I’m only assuming.” A quick appraising glance at Metarie’s beautiful form gave a fairly good idea on where he took his inspiration from.

“I’ve not heard much about it but from the little I have heard it sounds like a place worth seeing!”

Nasku took a few more moments to reflect on this. “And if I were to offer you to take you there? For a few days? Even a doctor needs some time off every now and then.”

He looked at her, gauging her reaction. He wasn’t quite sure where this offer had suddenly come from, but if it made her happy, if it was what she truly wanted, and he would really do this for her. Strangely enough, he felt like he wanted to spoil her, for real, and not just with flowers and a bit of company for a few hours because they had both been coerced into this.

Ree leaned forward, mirroring his stance and unintentionally bringing them closer to together. The look on she wore on her face was one of wonder, unguarded and almost innocent. She was charmed by the offer. Maybe it was the wine... A breeze lifted a stray strand of hair and blew it across her face. Ree lifted a hand to draw the strand away.

"I'd never really thought of leaving Marn." A true Marnian response if there ever was one. Ree certainly had the means to go on a holiday outside of Marn, she just never thought of leaving Marn.

"I have read that the Sea of Keltaris is so clear and blue you can see the fish swimming far below the surface."

Ree took another sip of her wine. "Do you know... I can't swim?" An interesting thought now that she realized it, floating as they were on a lake. "Although, I suppose all the sea creatures I'd read about might deter one from swimming in the sea..." The look on her face turned thoughtful. She even glanced up and off to the side before looking back at him.

"Have you ever been outside of Marn?"

It took a lot of willpower not to make a grab for Metarie’s wrist so she would let that enticing little strand of hair do its thing instead of tucking it away again.
He enjoyed the fact that she had – on purpose? – brought them closer together by imitating his position. The urge to briefly touch her hand or her hair was strong and Nasku firmly kept both his hands wrapped around the stem of his glass.

“We better make sure you don’t take a dive then,” he joked when she admitted to not being able to swim. “Because I don’t think I would be much of a help in that case as my swimming skills are close to non-existent as well.” It had never occurred to him that swimming could in some way be useful. Maybe he should see about that.

Her question made him pause for a moment though he still kept his eyes on her, even if they had been roaming a fair bit during their conversation, if mostly to watch the way the breeze and sunlight played with her hair.

“Does Shim count?” Nasku laughed briefly, shaking his head at his own miserable joke. “I have been outside of Marn but not very far and generally just on a day’s ride in a few directions. Nothing major and nothing really exciting. Unless you consider encountering thugs an adventure.”

The strand of hair was tucked behind her ear, revealing the long point of her ear. She chuckled with him.

"Well, we have that in common then, don't we?"

"Thugs?" Ree's eyes widened. "On the roads, you mean?" Certainly, Ree knew there were unsavory elements that preyed on the weak and unsuspecting in Marn, but they were talking about traveling outside of Marn. She turned her head ever so slightly and looked at Nasku from the corner of her eye, a dubious expression on her face. Another expression hinted at the surface, too. Their conversation was treading near the Guard and recent history made that subject a mood killer.

"Maybe going on a vacation isn't such a good idea." Ree pursed her lips and took another sip of wine, brows furrowing. That naughty breeze returned, but this time it was Metarie who broke convention and reached to move strands of hair from Nasku's face and tucked it behind his ear. She blinked. Her cheeks turned pink and her hand hovered in the air for a heartbeat moment. She moved to jerk her hand back to her lap.

"I'm sorry, I couldn't see your face."

Ree gave an embarrassed laugh. "So... about those thugs?"

Nasku’s breath caught when Metarie suddenly reached up to push a few strands of hair out of his face. Thoughts ceased and his mouth was left hanging slightly open as he had been about to say something. What? He couldn’t remember. Nor could he remember what they had been talking about.

If Metarie hadn’t prompted him, he would likely have continued sitting there, utterly stunned. Closing his mouth and rearranging his thoughts into a different direction from where they had been about to head, Nasku cleared his throat.

“Thugs, yes.” Attempting a weak smile, he tried to play over his embarrassment, pleasant as the experience had been. He caught himself again before his brain took a dive over the side of the boat. “They weren’t much to worry over. Probably a band of thieves from Marn to have set out for better loot somewhere else. Or to change their lives maybe. It’s hard to tell. We gave them a few valuables to keep them from trying to slit our throats since we didn’t want to resort to using weapons ourselves – I was travelling with a friend and a couple of employees – and it seemed to have settled the deal.”

He paused for a moment, cocking his head to the side as he thought over what he had just said and realised that maybe it had been more ramble than necessary; and it probably hadn’t provided a lot of information either.
“With a good escort, you shouldn’t have to worry about such things. Plus, I haven’t heard of any incidents in a long time. This was years ago, after all.”

“I’m sorry,” he continued. “I mean, I didn’t want to.. It was years ago. Besides, travelling is an adventure. I guess, you could say, this little incident was part of its charm?” He knew it sounded silly but he didn’t want her to think that travelling would be a bore or pose a threat and that she’d then decide that she’d rather stay in Marn after all.

Ree jerked her hand back and fisted it on her knee. She took another sip of wine, looking anywhere but at Nasku as she waded through, and waited through, her mortification. Truthfully, it wasn't unusual for Ree to touch others. She touched people as she spoke with them, but normally it would be a light touch on the forearm or back of the hand. Sometimes, a hand on a shoulder if she knew the person well. She did it out of a need to make a connection with others. She was a warm person, but held herself apart because of the past. Ree swam in a sea of loneliness, through self-imposed exile. She had almost broken her exile twice before. Now here she was making a third attempt. What was wrong with her? Was she really so lonely? So desperate? Another wave of embarrassment washed over her. Thankfully, Nasku spoke, interrupting a train of thought that was spiraling down into a deep cavern of guilt.

Ree's brows drew together. From Marn... "I don't understand people. Are opportunities so lacking that crime is a better option than being contributing citizens? I know. I know that things aren't perfect and that people want for things. That's why I have established a charity program, but education and medical care is free. Yet, there are those who refuse take advantage of what is available." She looked a little indignant, before smiling sheepishly.

"I think I am ranting again." She lifted the glass and peered at it. Somehow she'd had nearly finished the glass without even realizing it. "Perhaps it is the wine." She chuckled at herself with a rueful expression.

"I think you handled it well. I think a situation like that might just make me angry, which would be quite ineffectual and probably cause more trouble than good." Ree smiled again, a little more subdued than before.

"It's a pity one cannot travel safely without a good escort. But, I've heard there are monsters on the Sooquoi Plains. Did you see any of those?"

“Ah, you may be ranting, but it’s for a good cause. Besides, you’re absolutely right.” He wasn’t even trying to butter her up. Metarie really was right in that respect, and the fact that she was actually doing something to try and make this world a better place was admirable. How was it possible though that he knew so very little about this woman? He really should have done some more homework. But of course, figuring things out during the course of a conversation had quite some charm.

“Maybe more people should think the way you do. Invest a little something in charity and towards making things better rather than shovelling it all into their own pockets.” Nasku himself may not be one to ever have done a lot of charity as such, but he did sponsor a little theatre place and provided wages for half the staff because resources weren’t as forthcoming as the director would have hoped. But that was a different story altogether.

Chuckling, Nasku grabbed the bottle again to refill Metarie’s glass, and top off his own a little as well. It really drank very nicely. “If we keep this up, we’re going to have to get a refill soon.” Smiling at her yet again, he inclined his head in thanks at her comment, which almost seemed like a compliment.

“Monsters in the Sooquoi Plains? No, I have not seen any of those. And I’ve barely heard anything about them. Despite being monsters, they seem fairly elusive. Or maybe I just haven’t listened to the right stories.” A grin played around the corner’s of his lips but he didn’t let it slip into a full-blown smile, not this time. He had to stop smiling like a fool. He felt like such a little schoolboy! “Have you heard stories about these monsters? If so, I’d quite like to hear them if you do not mind.”

A pleased smile curved her mouth and she looked away as he complimented her opinion and agreed with her, too. When Nasku refilled her glass, she laughed and lifted the glass in a toast.

"If we keep this up, you will be carrying me home." She raised her eyebrows and then took a sip.

"Mmm," Ree shook her head. "Just rumors, but I would guess that it isn't too far from the truth. Maybe there were more when I was much younger. I recall when caravans would come in from the North Trade Route they would be heavily guarded and armed." Oof. Now she sounded so OLD. Ree made gave another rueful smile. Maybe she should try to find someone, an elf, perhaps, closer to her age...

"Again, most everything I know comes from books." Ree gave a little shrug with a grin. "If the books are to be believed, large lizards live on the plains."

Nasku almost choked on the sip he had taken when Metarie mentioned him having to take her home and decided not to reply to the comment for fear he might say the wrong thing. Not that he minded taking her home, but he had not even dared consider such an option, even if it had seemed harmless enough the way she had phrased it. Not that he would take advantage of her – in that case – inebriated state anyway. It would not be decent to do such a thing. Nor would it be fun for either of them. Presumably.

“Large lizards? Sounds harmless enough,” Nasku commented with a grin. “But you know what? I think we need to get your nose out of those books and out into the world for some adventure! Don’t you think?”

Nasku leaned closer to Metarie in a conspiratorial fashion, a mischievous and slightly boyish grin on his lips. “You know, my offer still stands. I will take you on an adventure if you so wish.”

Nasku grinned making Ree grin in return.

Nasku leaned forward conspiratorially. The look on his face was mischievous, boyishly cute, and charming. Ree's eyes widened, drawn in, and she leaned forward, too, wondering what he was going to say.

“You know, my offer still stands. I will take you on an adventure if you so wish.”

"You know," Ree was smiling, "I think I need an adventure."

As much as he had wanted her to say yes, he had not expected her to do so. Nasku’s eyes widened in pleasant surprise at her reply while his grin was already starting to spread all over his features.

“Really?” He still couldn’t quite believe it but nonetheless, he raised his glass and held it out to her, keeping the minimal distance that was left between them. “Here’s to adventure!”

Taking a small sip, he put his glass down next to his foot and offered both his hands to Metarie. “Do you trust me enough to make sure that nothing is going to happen to you on the road to wherever it is I’m going to take you?”
