Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
Talia swung her feet out of bed, thankful that she lived above a bakery so her feet never had to worry about a cold floor. She walked over to where a young boy was struggling against Drayel's grasp. Cocking her head she took in the sight of the boy and shivered. Both from the cold wind blowing through the window, straight through her light nightgown and from the memories that she had from just a few short years ago.
"What were you doing on my roof?" Talia asked him, peering around Drayel's shoulder, her curiosity piqued. "We're you the one who stole my dough? You know you can't eat it if its not cooked."
Talia looked up at Drayel a little bit worried about he was going to handle the situation. She knew that Drayel wasn't like some of the guards she had met and heard about but that didn't mean that he would treat a young boy fairly who probably was only looking for something to eat.

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
Hearing the high squawk of a young boy, Drayel withdrew his blade and frowned. He towered over the youngster for a moment before growling and grabbing the boy by the scruff again and holding him high. A sharp shake made the boy's head spin. Taking the chance at the stunned child he pulled the staff free and threw it on the floor before carrying him quickly down the stairs and towards the kitchen where there was more light. Now, as he held the boy firmly with Shade snarling just inside the doorway, he could see the boy clearly and just what shape he was in.
The boy was thin and dirty, muck from the city staining hair, skin and clothes alike. His clothes were sewed rags that were patched by crooked and loose stitch, most likely his own attempts. Dirty fingernails, calloused hands, paled skin and even the bones that jaunted flesh. The boy was starving and desperate.
"What's your name?" Drayel asked again putting the boy down. "No attitude this time boy. Do not test me."
"...It's Jackal." came the irritated response. Eyes locked and Jackal trembled below him, baring his teeth and snapping insults like a cornered dog. "What are you looking at? Never seen a poor kid before? I left the money alone!"
"Instead you stole bread, uncookd however therefor useless." Drayel said gravely. "You stole it from here using that magic you have to pick locks. You stole it because you needed food, right? That's what happened?"
"You figure it out, it's your job." Jackal sneered with a snarky laugh. "Don't want you getting fat and lazy you stupid pig."
"I would watch you tongue boy." Drayel growled though he sheathed his sword. He glared down at the startled look he received. "You stole to eat then but you didn't want to steal the money which means you thinking ahead a bit. If this store went out of business you would lose a place to eat."
"Well, at least you have a bit of brain beneath that brawn." the boy spat despite his tremblings.
"Act aggressive despite fears at such a young age, you've been on the streets for most of your life. No doubt something happened between you and the guards to instill such terror." Drayel continued despite the insults. He frowned as the glare left his face to look puzzled. "You look familiar though. Have you been jailed before or is this your first actual offense?"
"I'd never been caught before you if that's what your asking." snorted Jackal irritably. "This is the first time I robbed in fact!"
"Liar." Drayel said flatly as the boy glared at him. "You wouldn't have acted so calmly on that roof when Shade barked, you would've run. You also would've started smaller, like pickpocketing and such. No, you have stolen just I haven't an idea how many. No... It's something with your eyes I think..."
Drayel crossed his arms and frowned, his bare torso flexing slightly as he examined the boy. The movement however brought his tattoo into view, and when the boy saw it he went rigid as his eyes blew wide in fright. He was crawling back now, no smart mouth just open fear as he watched Drayel as though he was a monster.
"You took mum." He whispered trembling. "You're the guard who took mum and almost took me!"
"Mum? You're mother?" Drayel stared in shock at the cowering child. He frowned hard but no made no move to close in the child. He tried to piece together what little parts he had in an attempt to identify the child. When he did however he felt his own eyes widen and his arms uncross. "You're Jackal. That boy who lived in that shack with his drugged Mother?"
"Mother wasn't drugged! She was fine until you took her! I won't let you jail me too!" Jackal screamed when his back hit the wall and he realized he was trapped. He bared his teeth as tears began to bream in his eyes. "I won't let you! I won't! You took Mother from me!"
"We didn't have a choice." Drayel tried to reason. "She's safe now, she's getting helped. Just settled down and we can-"
"Liar!" the boy shouted scrambling to his feet. "You took mom! You took her because you sold your souls and you can't see anything except your stupid visions of justice! Mom didn't like that man! She didn't want to go but she had to! She needed that stuff he gave her she said! Then you took her! I didn't say goodbye!"
Now tears streamed down the boy's face as he continued to scream.
"I wanted Mother! If you didn't take her, I wouldn't have to starve anymore!" he cried balling his fists. "I wouldn't have to hide because I was scared you'd come and get me! I don't want to go to jail! I don't want to rot away like garbage!"
"You won't." Drayel tried gently only to get yelled at more.
"Liar! You lie because you don't have a soul-"
"Whomever told you I didn't have one lies as well then." Drayel interrupted gruffly. "I have one and I haven't sold it. Don't you think I would have jailed you if I hadn't? Killed you on the spot? I have done nothing to harm you besides a bit of a bruise, and I won't do anything if you don't try and run."
The boy's screams paused for a moment as he gaped at the larger man. He trembled but his lips sealed themselves, silencing his words through tight lipped fear. Seeing it Drayel's tone softened as he walked to stand near the boy.
"Now, let us start again." Drayel said gently coming to a stop near the boy's foot and crouching. "You robbed the store for food?"
"...Yeah." he whispered tightly.
"Why did you come back?"
"It's like the lady said. Can't eat dough." Jackal answered turning red. "It was dark last night 'n those stupid cats startled me. I just grabbed what I could and ran but when I got home I realized it wasn't cooked yet. I woulda brought it last night but I saw some guy choppin' wood so I didn't try it. Figured he was one of you pigs."
"Watch the insults." Drayel said firmly. "Alright, so you came here to try and steal actual bread this time?"
"Well, I'dda brought back the dough but it bein' in a dirty sack and all, I didn't think she could sell it." He glanced guiltily at Talia and then at his feet. "So, I figured I'd try and see if she had any scrap bread I could grab. I didn't want to clean out her shelves twice and all...."
"Then you aren't as bad a child as you let on, are you?" Drayel chuckled as he gave the boy a quirked smile. Seeing it the boy stared dumbfounded at the older man who simply raised an eyebrow back. "What? Never seen a guard smile?"
"You're weird old man." Jackal answered as he stared shocked at Drayel. Drayel immediately frowned back as he pinched his eyebrows together now, mouthing the child's words with a quizzical expression. "What? Never gotten called old?"
"I'm not old at all." Drayel stated with hum. "Back to you however, you said we took your mother? How did you know me?"
"That tattoo." Came the short response. "I saw it the night Mum got taken."
"Your mother... Where is your father?"
"Don't have one." Jackal answered with a snort. "Don't need one either. I'm fine on my own."
"..." Drayel sighed through his nose as he rubbed the bridge of his nose. "You have none? No family?"
"They didn't like Mum 'cause she had me." Bitterness leaked into the boy's voice as he glared at his feet, grinding his teeth as he fumed darkly at nothing. "So, Mum found the shack and had me. Been us until you soulless monsters took her."
"Again with the soulless. Who told you we have no souls?" Drayel snapped exasperated. The boy glared at him and he glared back, his lips tightening slightly as he locked eyes with the boy. They matched glares for a moment before the boy turned away and growled.
"Mum."
"Of course she did." Drayel grumbled as he gave his eyes a slight roll. He sighed heavily before propping his head against a hand and peering at the boy with a weary expression. "So, I'm soulless am I? Some sort of monster.... Well, so bad a monster I am why not give you a choice?"
"A...choice?" Jackal frowned suspiciously at the guard causing him to roll his eyes.
"Of punishments." Drayel answered waving off his hand. "Two choices, and one you must choose. Either you can leave now and if I catch you near here again, I cut off your hands or you come with me. A choice."
"And go to jail? No thanks." Jackal spat bristling. "I'd rather go-"
"Now wait a moment." Drayel said firmly. "I never said you were going to jail boy. If you come with me, you will come as my son. I won't take you to jail, you'd be eaten alive. No, you're a good boy just a little... misguided. T'is your choice."
"You.... You'd take me and be my Father?" Jackal doubted eyeing him suspiciously. "I don't think so. I don't want to be anywhere related to a soulless thing, fat pig."
"...Then go." Drayel grunted standing. "By morn, you best remember where not go be. I will not hesitated to arrest you next time we meet. Off you go. Shade, move out of the way. We won't pursue him tonight."
Shade growled but moved out of the way obediently. Jackal didn't hesitate for a moment, on his feet and bolting the second the doorway was clear. True to his word Drayel didn't chase after, simply standing and watching with a sad sigh.
"Poor boy." he said clicking his tongue. He glanced at Talia with a twitch of his lips. "You won't say anything, will you? I don't want to have to go to court over this and I doubt he'll come here again. He's afraid of me now and the threat rings true even to him."
Drayel looked at the still open doorway with a sad look before walking over to it quietly and closing it.
"Poor boy. Poor boy indeed...."
The boy was thin and dirty, muck from the city staining hair, skin and clothes alike. His clothes were sewed rags that were patched by crooked and loose stitch, most likely his own attempts. Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
Talia had followed Drayel and the boy down the stairs. Stoking the fire was the first thing that she did when they all reached the kitchen since the boy looked cold. After that she stood back a little, he mouth occasionally opening and shutting as she attempted to interject her two bishani but with the back and forth she never really got a chance until all of a sudden Jackel was running off while they watched.
Looking up at Drayel she smiled softly. "Of course I won't say anything. It's not like am planning on pressing charges against a poor boy especially if it was his first offence, if we are to believe him that is."
She walked over to the door opening it briefly looking for a sight of the boy. Shesighed before closing the door again, locking it and turning towards Drayel. "Although you didn't need to be so hard on the boy. He was scared and trying to act tough and obviously giving into your generouse offer, which I admire by the way, would have come across as weakness in his books. You could have at least let him sit down and grab something to eat so he wouldn't be tempted to steal again.and I don't mind if he decided to come around again so long as he wasn't stealing." She didn't mean to scold Drayel after the whole ordeal but she hadn't been able to say anything for the past 10 minutes.

"What would you rather me do? If I didn't threaten him, and he did come back then I would be seen as inadequet and another guard would be placed here." Drayel said gruffly. "If the boy was caught by the other, then there is no telling what would happen. You and I can only prevent so much."
Drayel looked up at the ceiling for a moment before turning and glancing over at Talia in her nightgown, his eyes soft and sad as he gave her a quirked smirk. "Nice outfit by the way. Had I not known better I would have thought a wild man came charging in your room baring a sword."

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
Talia tried to hide her pouting, certainly as a guard Drayel knew best but that didn't mean she had to like what he said. Of course as soon as Drayel pointed out her clothing she looked down and immediately started turning bright pink.
Tossing her ponytail over her shoulder she crossed her arms over her chest with a humph. "Well I certainly didn't expect to be disturb so suddenly." Shrugging she looked quizzically up at him. "So what now? You caught the culprit, I'm not going to press charges but is there anything else I have to do?"

"No." Drayel answered with a weary rub between his eyes. "Shade and I stay the night. If in the morning he hasn't returned then we leave and patrols will walk by more often until we're sure he isn't coming back."
Shade let out a low sigh and grumpily grumbled at the floor. Hearing it Drayel gave him a sharp look which he grunted and gave him a lazy stare of questioning. Drayel snorted at him immediately. "No need to pout mutt, you'll make more of my coin yet. I doubt this is the end of our 'partnership' forever."
Shade barked and wagged his tail which made Drayel sigh in return.
"Sometimes I really do hate you." he commented dryly before turning back to Talia. "The dog and I will do patrols by here once or twice a night for the next week or so to keep an eye on the place. Past that, we're out of your hair. Congratulations on surviving our idiocy."

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
"You know what they say, hate is the closest things to love." Talia said with a wink and a cheeky grin before switching to a simple smile and dropped a small curtsy towards the man and beast. "Even with all the craziness, I thank you both for all the work that you have done to help me as well as to find out the culprit, even if it was just a hungry little boy. You both are always welcome in the bakery...although not the kitchen, as long as there is flour around that is."
Talia chuckled as she headed up her stairs. A thought entered her mind and she backtracked a couple steps and peered around the corner. "I don't know if you boys will be around but you are welcome to stay for one last breakfast tomorrow before you go. There were some sausages left. Okay, now I'm off to bed, goodnight!"
Trotting up to her room she settled herself back into her bed, a bit sad at the thought that her time with Drayel and Shade was nearing an end but happy to have a conclusion to the whole missing dough mystery. At least she didn't have to worry anymore. With those thoughts circling her mind it did not take long before Talia was sleeping soundly once again.

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
Drayel munched on the last of his sausage, growling before glancing over at the equally silent Shade. It was high morn and no signs of the boy. There was a moment when he'd felt almost concerned. As if reading his mind, Shade looked up and gave him a grim smile.
"You know about it too huh?" Shade whispered softly. "The boy's not going to survive the week."
"I know that." Drayel responded flatly.
"So, you're going to let him die?" Shade snorted with a heavy frown. "That's not like you at all."
"Shut up." Drayel growled stabbing into the last bits of breakfast with a fork. "I'm trying to figure out how to narrow down the search area is all. Thugs don't kindly to having their territory used and it's only a matter of time before they find him."
"What about me? I can sniff him out."
"My wallet cannot deal with another emptying." came the flat response. "As much as you are useful at times, you're expensive as hell and irritating to boot."
"Ouch." Shade snapped bristling as he glared at the weary guard. "I wasn't going to charge you for it, asshole. That boy is still a damn kid, and to hell if I let him live through what I did. If you don't want me to follow you, fine. I'll go on my own."
"...It's been a while since you got this worked up." Drayel observed after a moments pause, his lips quirking as he let out a soft chuckle. "Alright, we'll go together then. Talia?"
He glanced at the Baker and spoke a bit louder, catching her attention as he picked up his dishes and scrubbed them quickly. "We're going to look for the boy. If he comes here, offer him food or just talk with him. Anything to stall him. Shade, shift outside. We don't want Miss Talia seeing a man before wedding day."
"That we don't!" Shade barked out a laugh as he smacked a hand on his knee and stood abruptly. "Alright then Tinny my boy, let's hunt some kid!"
"Find a kid, not hunt the kid. We aren't going to eat him." Drayel snorted as he took Shade's plate and gave the shifter a scolding look. "Honestly, you'd think we're cannibals the way you're talking."
"Where did you think those sausages came from?" Shade grinned cheekily. A thwack and a yelp. "Hey! What was that?"
"For having a terrible thought process. Go shift. Miss Idris? Thank you again for the breakfast, it was mighty good." Drayel did a short bow as he finished with the last dish and began to turn away. "Now, we be off!"
"You know about it too huh?" Shade whispered softly. "The boy's not going to survive the week."
"I know that." Drayel responded flatly.

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
When Talia had come down the next morning it didn't take her long to whip up a breakfast for the men and then get to work with the fresh baking to sell that day. She listened with a smile and the occasionally chuckle at the exchanges between Drayel and Shade, happy that they were going to look out for the boy from the night before.
Perking up as Drayel addressed her, Talia turned around and gave a determined nod. "Don't worry, I am sure I can find a way to keep the boy around." Talia said, already starting to think of different ways to keep a young boy around. Of course with the following comment she rolled her eyes and went back to her work with a huff and started to mutter to herself. "Like I've never seen a man before. If anything I at least have the decency to advert my eyes."
She glared at the dough before her as Drayel gave his last order to Shade before saying his farewell. Talia turned towards him once more and gave a curtsy in response to his bow. "The pleasure was mine." She said wiping her hands on her apron. "I certainly did not expect the amount of devotion to this job that you offered. If there is anything I can do to help out with the boy please let me know!" Talia waved the two men off before closing the door, sighing as she locked it.
"Well, back to the daily grind." She said to herself as she gave her bread loaves a judgmental stare before turning back to her work before the official business day began.

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
After he'd dropped by the guardhouse to grab his armor and weapons, Drayel began searching. It had been nearly four hours since the start of their search, Drayel running the streets while above Shade ran as werewolf and rain began to pour. Following the scent had proved useless, the city stench and rain quickly overriding any traces the boy had left behind. So now, they had to do it with manpower, determination and just plain dumb luck.
Drayel ran through the territory lines of the thug group, drawing lines in his mind where the borders were and just where the boy may be hiding. No luck so far, and Drayel began to wonder if the thugs already caught him. Was the boy alright? What if he was- No.. Stop. Worry didn't fix anything.
Above Shade let loose a throaty howl, signalling he was on a lead. Immediately Drayel stopped his running to look at roof, seeing a black blur leap across the alley then a bit farther down jump again. Chasing after him he kept his eyes up as he followed.
It wasn't long before he heard the heavy thwacking of a fist. He slipped around a corner to see before him a scene that burned his blood and made his teeth bare. The boy was lying on the cement with wide frightened eyes, beside him his staff and an unconscious thug. It was clear Jackal had tried fighting back and was cornered.
Without a thought he yanked the crossbow from his back, aiming it for the spot spot between the shoulderblades of the man who stood in front of the boy, trapping him. The sharp crack of the crossbow and his bolt let loose, embedding itself deep in tender flesh. A gasp escaped his target as he staggered a step, falling to his knees as he turned to stare in shock at Drayel before collapsing a top of the boy.
Drayel snorted coldly before reloading his crossbow and aiming now for the next one. The next shot hit the man in the thigh while he shot the last one in calf. Both yowled in pain as the fell to the ground, about to scramble away when they were stupid enough to look back into Drayel's bloodlust eyes.
They never got the chance to run away, pinned by his glare as he grabbed them by the back of their heads and smashed their faces together. Dropping their unconscious bodies back to the cement he turned his attention to the boy.
They looked at each other, eyes meeting as they simply stared at one another. He looked down at the boy as relief took hold of him, his shoulders slumping as he walked to the boy and dragged the heavy idiot off of him. Turning back with the soft smile of understanding he offered a hand up.
Jackal stared at him in disbelief, then at the hand he'd offered. He hesitated but Drayel kept his hand stretched, eyes softening as he waited for the boy. Then slowly Jackal took it before getting tugged firmly to his feet. They stood like that for a bit while Shade promptly started pissing on the thugs with a victorious growl. Seeing it Jackal blinked and began giggling while Drayel rolled his eyes. Turning back to the boy he gave his hand a gentle squeeze to get his attention. Jackal hesitated before glancing almost sheepishly at the guardsman.
"You know, the offer to be my son still stands." Drayel said gently. "I don't know how to be a father but I guess between the two of us we can figure it out. Of course, we'd have to get the farm fixed with some animals so that may take a while. What do you think? Do you think you could live with a father whose a 'Pig of Marn'?"
"Y-yeah. I think I could live with that." whispered Jackal as tears began to brim. Drayel chuckled as he let go of the boy's hand only to get it grabbed again. Startled Drayel looked down at a frightened boy, looking almost panicked as he clutched onto the guard's hand. "Y-you did it, didn't you....? You left the food."
"...Yes. I did." Drayel answered guiltily. "I had no choice to take your mother. She's sick and the man she was around was a terrible man. Yet, when we'd captured him and took her as well she cried about her son. She told us about you, where to find you and that you needed help. When I kept going over though, you'd run beneath the house. So, I left food. You never came out, but the basket kept disappearing."
"Then why'd ya stop? I'm hungry."
"I was... sick for a while. The cold caught up with me." Drayel answered sheepishly. "I didn't want to send other guards in fear they'd discover you and take you in. So, I'd hoped I'd be able to get well faster and you to take care of yourself for a while though I hadn't expected you to rob a bakery for it."
"So you didn't just give up on me?"
"No." Drayel chuckled. "I'm too stubborn to give up on anything."
Jackal stared up at him for a moment before the tears finally poured over and he began to sob. Drayel's arm wound around the boy's shoulders as he hugged the boy close to him. He held onto him while the boy let loose wild sobs, releasing pent up fear and frustration in loud wails. They hugged until the cries quieted into whimpers. A soft chuckle escaped Drayel as he lowered his voice to whisper.
"Come on boy, let's go apologize to Miss Idris for that troubles we caused and see if we can't rope her into making us a breakfast, shall we?" Drayel said giving the boy's hand a squeeze. Jackal hung on to him tighter, sniffing heavily as he nodded. Drayel chuckled before picking up the boy, leaning him gently on his shoulder. Turning to speak with Shade he paused when he saw the shifter already long gone, done with his claim to the idiots. Drayel snorted. "Guess the dog doesn't get to come along. Oh well, probably went to go get another round of guards. He hands these thugs in, he gets paid pretty good money."
"Why didn't you hand me in?" Jackal asked still hiding his face in Drayel's neck. Drayel glanced over at the boy for a moment before he started walking forward, his lips quirking in an almost loving smile as he patted the boy gently on his back.
"Because somebody gave me a chance and I thought you'd want the same favor."

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
It was well into the morning as Talia waved goodbye to another round of customers. Once they were gone her smile quickly changed into a troubled frown. She was still thinking about the boy who had been suddenly pulled through her bedroom window the night before. Was he okay still? Where was he living, did he have any friends and were they good ones at least?
Shaking her head she tried to rid the worrisome questions that flew through her mind. To distract herself she decided to head back in to the kitchen and make some cinnamon buns. On a wet and cold day like today the fresh smell of them would be welcoming to people walking by not to mention it would give her hands something to do, There were no customers currently anyways.
With the kitchen as warm as it was it didn't take long for the dough to rise to a satisfactory height and before long she was smearing butter over the rolled out dough. A knock on the kitchen door made Talia jump and she glared towards it. Staring at her buttery hands and then at the door as she walked towards it. Hearing a familiar voice she quickly wiped her hand on her apron and opened the door to a rather wet Drayel holding an equally soaking and a bit beat up and muddy boy. The moment she saw them she started to fly around the kitchen grabbing things as she talked.
"Oh goodness me, come in you two! Warm yourselves by the fire, I'll grab you some towels to help dry off. Coffee Drayel? None for you dear unless you want a spot of it in your warm milk. I have some sweet treats that are just about to head into the oven that you are both welcome to once they are done." Talia took a breathe after she handed Drayel some dry towel and a cup of coffee. She had already put a small pot of milk on the stove to warm up for the young boy with him and was currently finishing up her buns.
After she had placed the cinnamon buns the oven she poured the milk into a cup and offered it to the boy who was now sitting at the table.
"Okay, so tell me what is going on now?" Talia said as the smiled at Jackal before turning to Drayel for answers as she wrapped her hands around a cup of tea that she had made herself somewhere in the middle of her whirlwind of work.

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
As the boy scarfed down his food Drayel explained vaguely what had happened (leaving out that Shade peed of course) while watching Jackal with an almost amused expression. A firm poke with his boot reminded Jackal of manners but was quickly unnoticed when more food presented itself infront of them. Drayel snorted.
"Shade is most likely taking them to jail as we speak." Drayel finished his story with another munch. "Though, the boy I have yet to find a place for him to stay for a while. He cannot stay at the guardhouse as he is a child but I won't let him live in that shack either. Perhaps Lisa can take him in..."
"Whose Lisa?" Jackal asked shoving another bun in his mouth.
"Don't talk with your mouth full. You remember that werewolf who was.... urinating on the thugs? He lives with a family just on the outskirts of the residencial area. With some luck, she may keep you there if you pay a low rent of some kind. On that note, you need a job as well." Drayel snorted as he gave the boy a sharp look. He frowned a bit before glancing at Talia thoughtfully. "Do you know of any jobs for a twelve year old? I haven't had kids before and I was thrown into the guards or farming."
"I have good enough profit." Jackal complained with a pout before reaching for his milk and chugging it down, earning a sigh from Drayel. "How do you think I survived this long?"
"Pickpockets and robbing is not a clean profit. You're getting a good job." Drayel said firmly. He watched his 'son' chug down the milk and sighed. "Any ideas Miss. Idris?"

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
Talia smiled at Jackel's healthy appetite, pausing of course to quirk her eyebrow questioningly at Drayel's remark about Shade urinating on people. Shaking her head she decided not to ask questions, that man was a little crazy and she didn't know if she even wanted to try and figure home out!
Talia played with the tip of her braid as she thoughtfully stared at the ceiling. "Hmmm, a job for a young man... Oh I know!" Talia smiled excitedly. "It's not much but it aught to do for now. I occasionally need errands run during the day and as it occasionally takes away from my business here I am sure Mr. Campion, the owner of this place, would be able to spare a bishan or two once in a while. And if you prove yourself to be a responsible young man I am certain you would find that some of the other shop keepers may be willing to pay for an errand boy. Yes, I think that would do nicely."
Talia nodded happily at the thought and set about packing a basket she found with a loaf of bread and some of her fresh buns. "Here, give these to your woman you were talking about. It's not much but I know you have already paid out of your own pocket to help me and perhaps it will help a bit until Jackal gets some work. I can't do much besides bake and garden but if I can ever return the favour you are certainly welcome to let me know." She offered him the basket with a smile before rushing to the shop front to serve a customer.

"She's nice." Jackal commented offhand as he shoved another piece of bread in his mouth and munched happily. "She even fed me! Guess she's a bit stupid though if she's tryin' to hire the guy that robbed her. That can't be smart."
"Watch your mouth and talk when you don't have food in your mouth." Drayel growled firmly before rubbing his chin and sighing. "She's not stupid, she simply... wishes to give you a start I guess. We should be grateful of course but even I'm not quite sure how to react to that."
"Give her flowers." was the uninterested grunt. A heavy whack and the boy yelped a he glared up a scarlette faced Drayel. "What was that for? That hurt and I got egg up my nose!"
"You shouldn't suggest such odd things." Drayel growled as he gave the boy a stink eye. "Now, eat up. After we head home."
The boy grumbled but ate in silence with Drayel glaring venomously at him. It wasn't an awkward breakfast but it was one of those 'You're a chicken shit' / 'One more word and the sausage is going up there next'. Yet it passed without any food getting lodged up nostrils and before long Drayel and Jackal stood at the door with bowed heads.
"Thank you for the meal." They chorused as they took basket in hand and bowed their thanks. "We'll be back to visit soon."
Waving goodbye the two of them left side by side, a basket in Drayel's hand and a long stick in Jackals. Walking down the street they began their new life as father and son, begining almost immediately with another whack to the head when Jackal handed back Drayel's wallet.
Well, nobody said their life was going to be perfect.

Re: Baker, Baker, Where Are Your Buns?
While the boy and man ate, Talia spent the remainder of their visit sipping her tea and attempting not to choke on it when she tried to hide her laughter at their interactions. They certainly would make an interesting family!
Much too soon it was time for them to go, Talia responded to their bow of thanks with a small curtsy, waving to them until they were out of sight. Closing the door behind her Talia shook her head and smiled to herself. All in all things turned out better then she could have hoped. A young man was saved from life on the streets, an older man was given a family that perhaps would soften him up a bit and she herself had possibly gained some new friends.
Glancing around the kitchen she realized that all of a sudden it seemed larger without Drayel, Shade or Jackal there, although there still were remnants of their presence, flour stuck to the ceiling and other places that were too high for her to reach.
The bell announcing yet another customer coming for her bread or goodies woke her from her reverie. "I'm coming!" she called out as she straightened her apron. They would be back, if anything the amount of bread and cookies that they had eaten proved that they enjoyed it enough. They would be back if only for more buns.
