Dum’s dreadfully steel visage dropped for a moment, putting Andras at ease for an equal amount of time. Sadly, that moment was as short as a moment could be when Dum continued, “So, what name should I mention to Fargo down the line?”

His lips flipped up and down for a second, his previous fire stolen from him “Randas,” Andras replied. Deciding that was far too close for comfort, he added the marginally more convincing “Randas Tasselson. Remember that shit.”

Fuck, Haneul was not going to let him hear the end of this one. Dum was at least polite enough to avoid letting on if he had discerned the truth. From the responses he gave, you might as well be talking to a brick wall.

“That’ll be all then.” Andras shrugged, turning aside and starting to march outwards. His boots left rough holes gouged into the mud. “Come on boys, we’ve got a whore to kill. Eye or not, she’ll be fine on the fucking market.”

He chose to leave it ambiguous if he was planning to sell her into the literal fucking market.

Haneul wanted to groan when Andras mentioned his cover name. Randas? Really? Subtle. Very subtle indeed. If Dum had any doubts at all, he might just put it all together even quicker now. Andras might as well have given the dealer his real name, especially after the embarrassing fiasco with the one-eyed chick.

But, it wasn’t her place. So Haneul kept her mouth shut and just gritted her teeth.

She also kept her mouth shut when Andras announced what his next move was going to be. Something she didn’t want to be part of, though she sensed that she might not get much of a say in it if the bastard wasn’t going to run straight after the girl now, like a dog, with his mutts in tow. Though, of course, if put like that, she would probably fit right in since she had been assigned as his guard dog.

Sighing, she followed the boys and Andras out of Dum’s yard, but not without casting a backwards glance at the dealer. The latter was staring after them, his façade in place again and she wasn’t quite sure whether that was a good or a bad sign. A professional, most likely, but could he be trusted? Had they just jeopardised the whole operation? She really hoped not because if that was the case...

Moving up to walk beside Andras, fully aware of the fact that he would not want her beside him and that he would not want to hear what she had to say, she kept pace next to him and glowered in his general direction, not saying anything yet. The boys were still too close and while she did not much care about the man and would gladly leave him in a ditch somewhere, she didn’t want to reveal their little roleplay just yet and tell him off in front of his rats.

Andras did his best to ignore Haneul’s presence at his side, but nevertheless glowered at her repeatedly. She was shutting up, at least, and that was enough for him to capitalize on. He marched all the way back to the decrepit hovel he called home with his gang nervously in tow. Whenever one started to leave, Andras halted his procession, turned around, grabbed him by the mangy hair which Andras normally wouldn’t touch without gauntlets, and dragged him back into line. The one time two tried to leave at once, Andras sent his fist into both their faces. Andras sent a silent thanks to Teonidus that they were either too stupid or too timid to consider splitting up.

Now at the front of the door, he hurtled the door open with such force that one of the hinges broke away from the rotting wood. Turning around with a fury in his eyes that granted no room for error, he pointed inside and screamed into their faces, shouting “All of you shits, get your pansy asses in there, now!”

They complied. Andras considered slamming the door in Haneul’s face and dealing with this alone, but after several seconds of gears turning in his head, figured she would probably just go and report to Shanuri if denied the opportunity to try to control the devastation he was about to unleash. Lavell was going to pay for what she did to his uncle, and he wasn’t about to let Paragon stop him.

Those who they had left inside for the duration of the excursion had meandered drunkenly around the room before finding the corner farthest from Andras. The farthest corner was occupied by no less than three titres, each of them snuggling up against each other in their efforts to escape.

Once everybody was inside, Andras looked at his crew. He stalked over to the ones in corners and threw them at the others. Eventually, they had formed something approximating a line at one end of the room. Andras was positioned between them and the door. Many of the titres were not here, but Andras didn’t particularly care. If none of them knew he’d just start hurting them until they found the one that did. With uncharacteristic quiet, he whispered. “Which of you pieces of crap dragged her off to the hospital? Gatchey, you’re clear. You wouldn’t have told me to go there if you knew she was going to be there.”

Gatchey smiled and stepped over to Andras’ side of the room as his fellows glared at him, jealous of his position as Andras’ favorite. Gatchey continued walking until he stood next to Haneul. As Andras continued to spout profanity at them, he spoke to her.

“So lovely, what do you think now that you’ve seen-” He was interrupted by a crack as Andras assaulted their table. While it didn’t break, it did develop a notable crack in the leg. Gatchey sighed. “Damn it, now I need to get a new…” He shook his head, and picked up where he had left off. “-now that you’ve seen the boss work?”

Gatchey chuckled as Andras grabbed one of the titres, dragged him to the ground and straddled him, then started beating him while yelling into his face. Such was Andras’ fervor that globs of spittle sprayed out his mouth. Gatchey help out a pipe and offered it to her, filled with what unmistakably smelled like opium. “And continue to do so. Heh heh… Not really that different from your own line of work, is it? Straddlin’ and screamin’ both aplenty.”

The way back seemed to stretch endlessly and Haneul’s throat was starting to feel constricted with all the insults she wanted to throw Andras’ way. Bu she refrained. As she had done for the most part so far. From the looks of it, it was of no use anyway, and she preferred him taking out his anger on his little rats rather than on her. Not that she would mind a shouting match with him but there were far too many witnesses around and she didn’t want to risk tapping into her magic. It was already much too close to the surface for her liking. She needed to..

Before those thoughts could take any further root, Haneul pushed them back down into the dark corner of her mind from where they had arisen and instead found some amusement in the behaviour of the rat family. It was obvious that they were scared of Andras or at least of the fury currently raging inside him – and all around him. The boys had no chance of escaping him and they were well and truly trapped once they reached their hidey-hole.

Haneul carefully closed the door behind them, trying not to break it even more than Andras had already done, ignoring the scared way the gang was scrambling all over the place in a futile attempt to get away from their master. The more agitated everyone got, the more trouble Haneul was having to keep a handle on her magic. She had definitely waited too long. The need to use it was making her heart pound faster and enclosed quarters like these certainly did nothing to help calm the sensation.

Again, she repressed the desire as much as possible and focused on gaining some enjoyment out of watching Andras make a complete fool of himself. She assumed that she was probably going to get an earful later as well - the glint in his eyes when he had looked back at her while standing in the doorway had not escaped her - but she was looking strangely forward to it. It could swing many ways, but it would be interesting, of that much she was sure.
When Gatchey sidled up to her, she ignored him until he opened his mouth. She briefly looked at him and then dismissed his question, not feeling the least bit inclined to answer him. Looking back to Andras, she couldn’t help one corner of her mouth lifting up into a sort of grin. Talk about repressed feelings. Andras certainly had no trouble expressing exactly just how pissed off he was.

At Gatchey’s next words, Haneul’s head flew back in his direction and she pierced the man with her eyes, the shadows underneath her hood starting to coalesce. She wanted to rip his head off and she had already opened her mouth to scream at him, asking him who the hell he thought he was and who the devil he thought he was talking to, when she suddenly remembered how Andras had portrayed her. Did he have to make them all think she was a working girl??

Gritting her teeth, she swallowed her retort and instead delicately pushed the hand holding the pipe away from her. “We wouldn’t want to ruin my performance now, would we?” She nodded towards Andras, happily pounding away, and quickly removed her fingers from Gatchey’s wrist as though she were afraid what Andras might say about her touching another man. “I’m not sure he would be pleased if that were the case.”

Gatchey, showing a perceptiveness one might not have expected from Andras’ titres, raised his eyebrow at the glare she shot from under her hood. His hand retracted the pipe a bit even before she started to push her away.

Her subsequent excuse seemed to amuse him, and he laughed softly. The sound was raspy and from his throat came the faintest trace of smoke. “You’re kidding, yeah? He’s many things, but you’re only the second gal he’s ever cared if any of us screwed when he’s done. The first’d be the lady he’s interested in finding now,” Gatchey nodded his head towards Andras. “Quite the history there, I’d have to say. But then, a lady o’ the evening wouldn’t be interested in such things.”

Gatchey smirked, then once again offered her the opium pipe as the clatter of thrown furniture resounded in the background. Dropping the pretense, Gatchey said, “Honestly, I could give a better show as a whore than you. Teonidus blessed, Lovely, that glare of yours could curdle milk.”

For a second, Haneul thought she had completely misjudged the situation, but then it seemed as though Gatchey was happy enough with the excuse she had given him for not accepting the pipe. That Andras had only ever cared about one other girl fit with what she knew of the man, though she hadn't given his love life any thought until now. Which was foolish, she came to realise. Love and sex were usually the easiest ways to find a way to manipulate someone. Why had she never looked into that particular area of his background before?

"Oh well, you know, a girl is always interested in a bit of gossip," Haneul offered with a coy smile as she ignored the pipe but leaned a little closer to Gatchey. She would have to pay attention to that man. There was far more to him than met the eye.

Which he proved right away.
"Does it now?" she replied, keeping the smile on her face. "Maybe I'm just not what you're used to." She cocked her head to the side, waiting to see what he would reply to it. So what if he thought she was performing an act, and that he had seen through it because she had made a blunder. She was acting, but that didn't mean she was going to tell him the true reason for her presence. She did want more information though...

Somewhere in the room, a meaty thud sounded, followed by the loud crack of the table leg giving way under the weight of one of the rats. Haneul grinned. "You better make sure there's a new table, yesterday."

Gatchey sighed, a heavy frown weaving its way onto his features. “Tomorrow, maybe. Deal with this crap tomorrow.”

Seeing that she wasn’t about to take the pipe, he eventually started using it himself. The smoke slowly began to fill the room. “I’m surprised. Normally you Tian Xia folk are all about the opium. Isn’t it tradition or somethin’ out over there?”

On the subject of Andras’ love life, it seemed no information was coming unprompted.

"You seem to like your generalisations," Haneul simply replied, not reacting further to his question.

The show in front of their eyes was starting to get ridiculous and Haneul itched to join in the fray, if only to knock them all out in one fell swoop and give Andras a piece of her mind. What on earth was his problem?

"So," she drawled after a few more moments of watching silently and trying to ignore the smoke emanating from the pipe. "You mentioned some history... I would love to hear more about the girl who brought on such a reaction. She must have been phenomenal."

Gatchey chuckled. “She was. Used to run our little band, before the boss’ uncle got killed.” Gatchey took out his opium pipe and smiled at her. His teeth were all an unhealthy yellow, and his front tooth seemed to have a large chip in it. He seemed to be fortunate enough to have avoided losing any.

“I guess he blamed the lady for it, but from what I hear the ol’ bastard did it to himself. The guard decided Andras and his uncle went up in flames. I couldn’t tell you much more than that, ‘sides our final encounter. I’m more than a bit surprised she survived that wound the boss left her with, to be blunt with yah.”

Andras started walking towards the door, and Gatchey wisely shut up. Andras, his face red with fury, was dragging a titre by the collar. Despite having clearly been beaten, the titre only yelled “wait wait, wait! I got a splinter! Shit, let me-” He was interrupted when Andras hurtled him out the door.

Andras towered over the cowering titre. “If you don’t find Joss before I do, you ever show your fucking face around here again I’ll skin you, you hear me?”

Dutifully, the titre scampered off. Andras’ head whipped around towards the pair. His eyebrow rose at the sight of Gatchey. Gatchey just smiled and waved his opium pipe, which, for whatever reason, seemed to pacify Andras. His gaze turned to Haneul.

“You’re still here? Whatever. C’mon, Joss isn’t here and he’s our lead so I’m going to go find him and slit his traitor throat.”

Once the birds start singing… If only they would really sing.
It wasn’t a lot of information Gatchey gave her but it was better than being completely clueless in this matter. Whatever else Andras was going to do from here on out, she needed to be on her guard because things could go spiralling downhill very fast. She hadn’t known there had been a girl involved in the whole thing. Not that she knew a lot about Andras, unfortunately, but she had managed to snag a bit of information on the people working for Shanuri. And something about this girl had to have been very special.

“From the looks of …,” Haneul started to say but then followed suit and also kept her mouth shut when Andras approached, stormclouds in his eyes. She neatly side-stepped the flying limbs of the titre as he was manhandled out the door but no word left her lips. She merely pulled the hood a little further over her head again to keep her face in shadow. They were most likely going to leave pretty soon again, she assumed, and whatever came next, she knew it was better if Andras couldn’t watch her too closely.

As if on cue, Andras growled at her and left through the door. After a brief glance at the smiling Gatchey, Haneul followed the man outside, quickening her steps to catch up to him. For what seemed like a long time, she didn’t say a word, didn’t look at him but merely stuck to his side as Andras weaved his way through the streets.

“Where do you want to start?” she finally asked, unable to figure out where exactly it was he was leading them.

Before he could reply, Haneul suddenly pushed him into a small, dark alley branching off just at that moment and pressed him against the wall, using her cloak to cover them as much as possible. Her heart was beating a frantic beat as she put a finger to his lips and tentatively used her senses to inspect their surroundings. “Battlemage,” she whispered, barely audible.

Andras glanced between Haneul and Gatchey. He frowned disapprovingly before he stalked out into the night. He made sure to close the door quickly enough that it might hit Haneul, but unfortunately she was shadowing him pretty closely. The wooden door only pushed displaced air against her before it ground to a halt in its frame. Haneul had decided to follow him still. His lip curled in preemptive dissatisfaction. She wasn’t going to like any part of this, but she wasn’t in a position to argue with him about it.

“I’m going to check all his shit watering holes.” Andras growled back at her inquiry. He made no effort to verbalize further for the rest of their walk.

A few short blocks later was all it took to prove Haneul was going to whine about this. She grabbed him and started pushing him into an alleyway. Andras’s first assumption was that she had lost her patience and wanted to lecture him in a place where they wouldn’t make a scene. For her first couple pushes, he decided to let her futilely attempt to move his considerable mass just so he could revel in his momentary power over her. When her pushing got more desperate and didn’t relent, he let her push him into the alley.

He rolled his eyes once they were out of sight. This had Gatchey written all over it. Maybe the man had gotten too secure in his competence. Andras made a mental note to break that ‘no hitting’ rule he had previously applied to the little man. “All right, what the fuck did Gatchey—”

Then she whispered the word “Battlemage” and Andras’ expression was remarkably nonplussed. He looked out into the street, then back at her. She was staring intently, but come on. Battlemage me once, right?

“Are you having some kind of fucking off-day?” He said, trying to wrap his fingers around the cloak she had thrown over the both of them. With her body pressed against his under the heavy sheet, a vulgar little thought occurred to him. “Wait, I get it. You think acting out your cover story might sound appealing, don’t you?”

Andras grabbed the cloak and used it to pull her even closer. He then proceeded to thrust his hips against her, releasing a mocking cackle into the night air.

The man was stubborn, oh so stubborn! Far too much so for his own good. Not to mention thick-headed and arrogant. Someday… Someday she was going to really want to do something to hurt him and she wasn’t sure she had the will to stop herself when that time came.

Did he really think everything in this world was about him? She wanted to yell at him to move quicker, that this had nothing to do with Gatchey or any of the other idiots following Andras around like a pack of dogs (somewhere in the back of her mind, she was reminded of a mocking “Woof!” she had thrown his way not too long ago herself) and she wanted to scream in frustration at the ever-growing throbbing pulse of magic inside her. It wanted to burst free, it wanted out and it certainly wanted to do very wicked things to the battlemage prowling the streets.

What the devil was that mage looking for? Or who? Had they detected her? Why was the bastard lingering where there had just been?

Haneul didn’t grace Andras with a reply to his stupid question, because that was exactly what it was. Stupid. Her mind was reeling however, her heart beating even quicker now. If that battlemage didn’t return to its hidey-hole soon, they might encounter them again… If they were looking for her… She did not want to ponder the consequences. It would not only blow her complete cover but it might make her have to engage in a battle she wasn’t absolutely certain she could win at the moment.

And suddenly Andras wasn’t quite so stupid anymore. It would never have occurred to her to entertain such thoughts where a man like him was concerned, but he was a man as his impromptu thrusting motion vividly demonstrated. Whatever the battlemage was looking for, and even if it had sensed her magic, which should not have been possible with how tight a lid she – usually – kept on it when she was inside the city and on the job, they would not stop to look to look twice if all they saw or heard was a couple…

Without replying to his verbal taunt, she responded to him pulling her closer and pressed her body flush against his. Then she gave a rather audible moan in response to his thrust.

To say that Andras was confused would have been the understatement of the year. The last thing he had expected was receptivity to his vulgar gesture. A tiny, rational part of his brain told him that this behavior was in no way normal for Haneul. The rest of his body had strick disagreements on the matter. She was not attractive, but if there was a man who could avoid arousal with a woman pressed against him and moaning, Andras didn’t know him.

What Andras did know was that he didn’t like being the one pinned against the wall. He wrapped his bulky arms around her and spun the pair so that she had her back to the rough wood. With newfound leverage, he took over her role of pushing their bodies together. His arms released their vice-like grip on her body to start working under her shirt.

His expression was grotesque, but his refined features twisted it into something surprisingly pleasant. It was a teeth-baring smile, with downturned eyebrows. It was the smile of one who, through experience in the matter, believed he was in control but knew deep down how wrong he was. Yet despite it all, his square jaw and set features retained their often overlooked allure.

Andras might have been unaware of how his appearance affected a woman; his personality ensured most left long before getting to this point. But Andras had years of experience with Lavelle, and hadn’t been shy about attending brothels in the interim. If there was any situation in which Andras knew how to make his body work for him, it was situations like the one he believed this to be.

Andras’ smile broadened, and the remnants of his discomfort fled his features. Lust was something he understood, and he had convinced himself that lust was exactly what was happening.

“Well, all you had to do was ask.” He said, taking his time to admire the musculature of her now-bare stomach. He wasn’t in any particular rush.

Slammed against the wall and instantly feeling the pressure of Andras’ body against hers, Haneul was momentarily thrown by how well that manoeuver had worked. And worked it had, if the growing erection was any indication to go by. The man was so gullible, despite an otherwise decent display of intellect, and she could not believe he had actually fallen for the ruse. Then again, he was a man.

The battlemage, the one this little ploy had actually been intended for, lingered for a while longer, seemingly listening to the little sounds of pleasure she emitted from time to time in between Andras’ fumbling. Pervert.

When Andras’ hands had found their way onto her bare skin, she shuddered. Unfortunately, her body did react to certain touches as well, whether she wanted it to or not. She gasped while at the same time wanting to scowl at his words. To avoid giving away the promise of death lurking in her eyes, she entangled her hand in the hair at the back of his neck in an attempt to angle it slightly downward while she turned her face upward in the other direction. All in a perfect show of intimacy for casual observers.

What didn’t help was the fact that the magic was roiling under her skin, making her writhe under the Andras’ touch. It wanted at the battlemage. The mage was too close and kept following them. Or at least that was what her magic tried to make her see. It wanted to eliminate a potential threat. To distract herself from the battlemage, who was finally starting to make a retreat, and in a desperate attempt to reign in her magic, Haneul focused on the man pressed against her and began snaking her hand south. As soon as it reached its final destination, she gave another sound of pleasure and explored a little.

The second the battlemage was out of magical reach, Haneul went for the balls and squeezed. “Now listen to me, you little shit,” she growled, all trace of lust evaporating from her voice as though it hadn’t been there in the first place. The shadows in the alley began creeping closer and there was something dark and dangerous visibly lurking in them.
“The only reason you aren’t dead yet is because I gave Shanuri my word that I wouldn’t harm you because apparently you are useful.” She dug her nails a little harder into the sensitive flesh. “But I find it harder by the second to not break my own word and damn all the consequences to hell. Unfortunately, we’re stuck with each other for the time being, but don’t make the mistake of thinking that your words and actions won’t demand retribution sooner or later.” An edge of nightmares turned reality crept into her voice as she said: “You don’t want to fight me.”

Not surprised by her initiative, Andras assumed it to be an effort to regain control on her part. Blinded by raw feeling as he was, little thought went into anything else she might be trying to pull. His hands dove deeper under her shirt, feeling for whatever curves they could find, when her hand started snaking down his trousers. He grinned with visible satisfaction, until the pain started.

Andras’ mouth closed. He whimpered like a dog. His features contorted, and it felt like all his breath had fled him. A wave of nausea unique to men filled his lower body. His breakfast lurched upwards, forcing Andras to painfully constrict his throat and force it back down. He could taste hints of phlegm on his tongue.

Andras took a moments Haneul spent speaking to collect himself. The sharp relief of pain washed away the vengeful lust which had overtaken him. He surged with the illusory power of man whose body declares it time to fight and fornicate.

His revolted expression morphed into one of rage. A vile snarl overtook him. With teeth bared and eyes wide, Andras leaned backwards, his form tight as a bowstring, only to snap forward with all of the force he could bring to bear. His forehead rammed into hers, a force which was compounded by her head rocking backwards into the wooden wall behind her.

He felt her grip loosen and she slumped down the wall. He took a step back, but didn’t bother fixing the state of his trousers. A sick, pained smile grew on his twisted face. Rationality having been restored by agony, he had realized that she was being very serious about the battlemage. He eyed the shadows cautiously. They had darkened far beyond what was natural.

But he scoffed at them all the same. “No. You don’t want to fight me.”

Adrenaline drove him onward. He leaned down until his forearm rested on his knee and brought his narrowed eyes lower until they stared right into hers. His breath fouled Haneul’s face. “Not with the battlemages around.”

“For so long as you aren’t able to use magic, I’m your superior in every way. So swallow your pride, bitch. Or die to kill me.” Andras spat on her shirt, then fixed his trousers.
