Name: Gilith Greenwood
Gilith is best described as a hardy individual, with a very rough and unkempt exterior. His hair appears cut with his own knife, surprisingly it doesn't look too bad, and his face, very clean shaven, is maintained in the same manner. His facial structure also appears naturally strong, with a defined chin and cheekbones leading to sharper qualities.
His hair is brown, often mistaken for black if it gets increasingly dirty. His eyes are perhaps the fairest part of his entire person, being a light green, and filled with both life and wisdom, or rather, they used to be, now only one of his eyes shines like that. The other is trapped in eternal darkness, broken and disfigured beyonnd the point of repair. However perhaps the most noticeable of his features is a large jagged scar running diagonally across his right eye. This scar, being an old one, has faded, and is not very hideously disfiguring, though the actual eye itself is not a pretty site. Gilith's face is easily described as weathered, and it alone is a testament to the rigors of his lifestyle. Few indeed find they can mistake him for a fool, and fewer still find they can surprise or intimidate him.
Gilith is in a state of great physical condition, having eaten healthily most of his life, and worked hard for just as long as well. His body type is certainly that of one who is very well muscled, though not the point of detracting from his limberness. Gilith's normal attire consists of mostly simple clothes, mainly utilitarian in both function and form. The first of which that is normally seen is a dark grey cloak draped over his shoulders. This cloak has a hood on it, which Gilith most commonly places over his head, useful for both stealth purposes and simply keeping his head in the shade, or a little warmer for that matter, all depending of course on his surroundings.
Underneath his cloak is a green shirt made of soft cotton as well as simple brown trousers underneath this. Along his waist is a black leather belt, which has dangling from it a knife many pouches and two skins for drinking. A pair of black boots adorns his feet, these are most often seen caked with dried mud and are worn down, but still holding strong. A bow is seen along Gilith's back, always and with very exceptions. It is strung most of the time and accompanying it is a brown quiver of forty black arrows. Most of these arrows are normal but ten of them have heavier heads made for piercing armor or other thin metal structures.
~long knife(Tella) : A long knife is kept in a sheath on Gilith's side. It has a small cross bar and uses an elks antler for it's handle. It is surprisingly just as good as a very well made knife with a wooden handle and even looks more decorative.
~One pair of spare clothes.
~ A skin of water, another of wine.
~A grey dark grey cloak
~A bow (Andaith)
~A quiver with forty arrows
~Three small pouches with various little things like a small amount of money and some tinder and flint, etc.
~Backpack: Mainly used for carrying food and clothing, and whatever else might need carrying, such as his torches, a rope, a whetstone, etc.
Powers or Strengths:
~Dexterity: Gilith is very fast on his feet, this is partly due to him being naturally graceful, and partly because he has honed his reflexes in years of combat and training to be a master of the hunt.
~Wood-lore: Gilith's abilities as a fighter are only rivaled by his abilities as a woodsman. He has the ability to identify most plant and animal life he comes across. He can also track extremely successfully, and stealthily hide, as well as move, due to his skills as a hunter. He has a minor understanding of carpentry taught to him by his father. This can help him pick up a bit of work when he needs it.
~Bows: Gilith is simply amazing with a bow, having used one his entire life. His accuracy, thanks to his powerful bow of yew, is good even at 120 yards, able to hit a man with his arrows, most of the time, at this range. He tends to hit bulls eyes around 100 feet.
~Cooking: Gilith is an excellent cook and knows how to prepare and make food wonderfully so long as the food is relatively simple. Gilith prepares nearly all of his own meals, and has been doing so for years, and as such he has a great understanding of the flavoring of spices on meats and in soups. Such beverages like tea and coffee are also in his mental cookbook, and he even enjoys a glass of these every so often.
~World worn: Gilith has traveled many lands, and seen his share of places. While he is not a man who should be known for his spectacular intellect, he has certainly accumulated his share of wisdom and retained it very well. Such things as troubles between two friends Gilith might know how to help out, having dealt with countless people in his day, or perhaps a sticky situation calling for fast action that is also not simply crazed and brash, this is something else Gilith might just be able to do. Obviously he's not omniscient, but he's certainly been around the block more than once.
~Knives: Gilith is light on his feet and quite fast, this and his training as well as experience in fighting with knives makes him a moderate threat to individuals in melee combat. Though he is not so dangerous to heavily armored opponents with longer weapons as he is those without.
~Bi lingual: Gilith has taken it upon himself to learn elvish, and during his time as a traveling mercenary a he was able to do so, as he traveled with a half elven man who was his mentor for many years. He is proficient in both speaking and writting the language, as well as his own, tongue of man kind.
~Poetry: Gilith is an accomplished amatuer poet, having tried to write many poems about his adventures for quite a few years now, he keeps very few and doesn't believe they are anything special. But one day he hopes very much to create something beautiful that will be preserved and recited for many years to come.
Weaknesses and Flaws:
~Poor: Gilith is very poor, that is a fact. He takes in most of his money form mercenary work, however he has a heart, this can cause him to loose many jobs of easy money, as he will not take any jobs he deems to be morally wrong. While he manages to feed himself being an amazing hunter, he rarely has more than a handful of coins on him at any time. Most of his money goes towards maintaining his equipment, like repairing his weapons or buying new arrows. Leaving him with probably less money than what is required to rent a hotel room for the night.
~Lawless nature: Gilith is not used to rigid laws and restrictions, being alone and in the wilds most his life. He has the ability to follow the laws of the land but he really doesn't put a lot of effort in to doing so. Not fearing most law enforcement agencies, he normally will hardly consider the consequences of breaking laws inside of a land. However, he will also do his best not to get caught, not being too foolish.
~Dislike of large groups: Gilith prefers to operate in smaller groups, he will do all that he can to avoid having to function in larger ones preferring little to no company, especially when trying to perform a task of some sort. This is for no particular reason other than Gilith's preference in life is little to no people, one of the reasons why he took to wandering. He finds it hard to stay in major cities and live in large communities. At times he can even be a tad foolish, leaving the safety of numbers so to speak in order to do things his own way. Another reason why he dislikes a large group of people is that there are more restrictions on what he can do, where he can move, how stealthily he can travel. Little things like this just add up for him over time and make him uncomfortable as well as even detract from his effectiveness in the field.
~Sense of honor: Gilith's sense of honor, or pride, can often get him in to trouble. If he is insulted he finds it hard to let that go without a fight, he also refuses to lie as much as he can, even if this goes against his self-preservation. One such of his oddities is that he refuses to let others touch his bow, or wield it, or even to let it leave his side. As one can imagine this could be very problematic for him if weapons are not allowed in certain areas
~Lead, follow- oh just get out of my way already!: Gilith can have the tendency to be a no nonsense kind of person, even when more subtle speaking skills might be needed in a situation. His tendency to "call it as he sees it" has gotten him in to trouble before; as such he makes quite the poor follower. While one might think this attitude might just qualify him for some sort of hard-edged leader, they would also be unfortunately wrong, as he has no desire to lead men, nor does he have any idea of how to do so. He would probably do his best to avoid being a leader of any kind, knowing full well that men under his command would probably end up in less than desirable situations. Ie. Gilith knows how to take care of himself extremely well in a battle, but he could not say lead a group of soldiers used to fighting with strategies and formations effectively in any way against a number of enemies. The only larger group he would really function well in other than a small party, is a group of men like himself, men of the woods, hunters, warriors, wise men. Even then, he would prefer if there were more a democracy to the group as opposed to a leader.
~Half Blinded: Gilith suffers from being blinded in his right eye, though he can still shoot his bow with extreme accuracy as he uses his left eye to aim, he is still not quite as perceptive as he once was. The eye is also clearly disfigured and easily noticed as blinded, thus when in a fight many enemies try to take advatage of this and attack his blind spot. He has had many years to get used to fighitng like this however and has learned to guard this side of him quite well even without the eye, but nonetheless it takes considerable more concentration and effort on his part to do this than it would a normal man, making him nearly unable to multitask when he is forced to defend himself.
~Claustrophobia: Gilith has for most of his life lived in the wide open world of the outside, and if he is forced to reside in a small room or building things may take a turn for the worst. While he does not mind staying in a cave or small room for a little bit, extended periods of time could drive him mad and restless. Causing him to become desperate, and thus vulnerable, as well as prone to making terrible choices.
~Communication: Gilith is not suited to lead and even possibly follow, but to pile on Gilith is also not the best communicator in general. His vocabulary is excellent and he even comes up with songs and poems in his spare time. But that is only with great thought and significant time. In general Gilith is a quiet man of very few words and will seem to be giving the world the cold shoulder. Needless to say not many people have very good first impressions of him, and even if they do try to get to know him he would still be very blunt and calloused towards them.
Gilith was born to two human parents of the names Gile, and Lily, Father and Mother respectively. They lived in a humble cabin in the woods, making their living as lumberjacks and selling the wood they cut down for cheap to a few traders here and there which traveled near their house.
Here from a very young age Gilith was taught by his father the wood-lore he knows today, this being tracking, carpentry, hiding, as well as flora and fauna identification. On top of these skills he was also taught how to use his bow very efficiently and accurately. These were happy times, but unfortunately for Gilith they were due to end some time or another. His mother whom was a kind and loving person died of disease when Gilith was ten. He and his father were quite saddened by this but they did not move yet. However after a few nights they started to pass many stories by the hearth in their home about what it might be like to explore a large city. However one day as he and his father were felling a tree something went terribly wrong, and as Gile moved out of the way of the falling timber he struck his head against a low branch, very hard, and fell backwards because of this. The tree, a large oak, landed on him and shattered his chest. He was able to talk to Gilith and say his good byes to his son, apologizing for leaving him in such a way as an accident like this. Gilith told him that he needed no forgiveness, and promised his father that he would visit the cities they had talked about for so long. Gile agreed, there was little left for his son out here.
Gilith though only at the time sixteen cried very little, and wasted almost no time. He couldn't explain it but after this happened he just wanted to wander, wander away from the worst moments of his life and never stop walking. So long as he kept walking away from it, he would be fine, or so he felt. He traveled to the nearest city he could find and tried to make a living, at first it was just as a lumberjack, he was able to survive this way at least. Making enough money to eat and rent a small room. But as time went on, barely a few months, he began to talk to some mercenaries that stayed in the same area as he did. Soon after talking with them he asked to be taught how to fight, and defend himself and others. A certain hunger had arisen in Gilith, once long ago now it seemed, his father had told him stories about how there family was made up of warriors, strong and proud. Defenders of righteous cause and people both common and noble. He wasn't sure how much of this was entirely true, but he did know that he wanted it to be.
The mercenary, a large good-natured half elven man by the name Jarek Steelhand, which Gilith was sure he had no reason for properly earning. Readily agreed to teach the young Gilith now nearing the age of seventeen, and looking the part of a fully-grown man. After a while of training and improving Gilith's skills and common sense, he decided he could accompany him on his next mission. Eagerly Gilith left the mediocre life of the simple woodcutter behind, and went to go follow more, to go and be more. This mercenary in time became like an older brother to Gilith, as they traveled and adventured together for many years. What Gilith found out that Jarek did best was hire himself out as a bodyguard. Often as a temporary bouncer or personal guard for merchants traveling between lands and cities. There were a good many skirmishes with thieves, which Gilith was able to help with even in his younger years. Having been an excellent shot with a bow at this time, and a few years later, he put his knife abilities to actual test. Luckily for him, Jarek was a good teacher, and he never suffered more than a few scraps and bruises, at least in the beginning. At night when he was twenty three; a very large party of thieves snuck upon their group. They were escorting a merchant of a city at the time. They had a few other hired hands with them but none of them were spectacularly good at fighting. Once again unfortunately for Gilith, Jarek was slain in this battle. Gilith and a couple of other men and the merchant were the only ones who managed to escape. It was in this battle, that a fierce heavily armored opponent with a spear gave Gilith the wound that blinded him in one eye for the rest of his life. For about a year Gilith wasted away all the money he earned on simply drinking, getting in to fights, and training. Though it should be noted these fights were never that serious, and he was only thrown in jail for a night or two every so often. Kicked from only a few bars for the rest of his life.
It was amazing that he remained in shape while this happened, as even through his depression he could not stand complete and total `non-productivity. So the money he didn't spend on booze and repairing tables in bars, he spent on learning how to fight better. Hiring instructors very good at what they did, as well as people to spar against. Most of his down time was filled with him beating away at instruction posts, shooting at targets moving and still and perfecting the techniques he was learning. He had a new dream, that wasn't to live a happy life making a living as a mercenary. That was to protect people, and to get so strong that he could do it alone if he needed to. So that way, no one he ever grew attached to, if ever he would grow attached to someone, would die like this on him again. After a year of this depressive state, filled with ironically more work than Gilith had ever done in a year. He set off in search of people to hire him, so as to test out his new skills. He was greatly pleased with them indeed, as he would find out on his next mission. So the years passed this way, and Gilith only got better, feeling more and more comfortable taking on more and more dangerous of missions. But soon even those days passed, as Gilith grew to hate the once so dearly sought after cities, the dreams of his youth. He didn't think it was that there was too many people, though he did feel a little stifled by them. He thought that it was mainly the looks the cities had to them, and the sheer amount of rules that one had to follow also annoyed him. Greatly in fact, he was used to being in the wild and doing what he felt like, he hated to be told he couldn't do something that he wanted to. So given the choice he avoided them.
That is to say, until he decided to enter Marn, Gilith had roamed the wide world and then some, but there were a few places he had not gone. Marn was one of them, he had heard strange tales of interesting things in the city and while it seemed to be quite strict in it's laws Gilith figured that he may as well make his way their, and add it to the list of places he had gone. Another reason why he felt inclined to go is for the purposes of making some money, as truth be told, he was running very low, he did not even have enough to support his arrows and other equipment. So indeed, in to Marn he traveled, hoping to find more work than he was on the outside world. The journey through the barren lands near Marn was harsh, but he didn't particularly have an impossible time crossing over it. For a few months he has taken odd jobs, even some of minor carpentry to earn money, finding this city very new and exotic. Not even too massive either. He didn't imagine that he would be staying very long, but spending a good while seems all the more possible now. He does however go in to the forest just exploring for days every so often; so that the feeling of being cooped up leaves him. He is surprised to say the least that he enjoys any of Marn, but new sights to him are like works of art for the painter. He is even able to find a steady degree of work hiring himself out as a guard, and a skilled one at that. He has never actually worked with the government of Marn and the guard itself. But he has talked with a few of them. However he has overheard whispers, small little things, perhaps nothing, but whispers of change undoubtably. Apparently there is talk of freedom fighting and a rebellion. Gilith could wrap his mind around this kind of cause quite easily, and besides that he imagines that if their side does win the rewards would be quite extensive, especially compared to the small amount of money he is making currently. As such Gilith has decided to attempt to join their ranks, and see what he can gain fom doing this.
